Thanks girls!!! Okay, time to go back to Lana and see what she is doing... and get a peak at someone else in Asgard... XXII. (Lana's POV) Feeling recharged I walked for a few more hours, watching the sun slide lower, casting a long shadows on the ground. I continued on my way, planning to walk in the dark, hoping to catch up with Sig faster, but as soon as I came out to the high buff above a great lake, my hope dropped all the way to the Veles' dark kingdom. With absolute devastation I looked over the waters that where cutting my way north. My eyes followed the distant shore line on both sides and a sigh escaped my chest. What am I supposed to do now? How do I know which way they went? This lake is huge and if I pick the wrong side, I'll never catch up with them. Great... that's just great. I sat down on the grass, watching the last rays of the sun pulling the red sky behind the rocky cliffs on the left. The reddened veil slid on the rippling water surface, leaving darkness behind, the trees burned with the last desperate beams of the sun and drowned in shadows. The cold breeze moved over the black waters, like a breath of a mighty beast of darkness and I shivered, wrapping my arms around me. I should make a little camp and think... fire would at very least warm me up a bit. And in the morning light I can look for any marks, trails... Wait... the fire! They will stop for the night too, making a campfire! I should be able to see it from here! I jumped up, and started carefully inspect the waterline. My eyes slid over the dark cliffs on the left and then moved to the left side, desperately searching for light in the forest line. Nothing... I was about to sit back on the ground when something blinked bright red in the distance, then vanished. I froze, concentrating on that spot on the left shore. Was it just wishful thinking or did I really see it? The blink repeated, making my heart jump, and turned into a barely there flickering light. Campfire! Sig! Finally! I quickly ran down the hill, cutting through the forest in the direction of the light. I could already see the small fire through the trees, and I was about to jump through the line of bushes, screaming my friend's name, when I heard multiple voices behind me. “I swear, he killed that bear with his bare fist, with one hit!” “Yeah, like that's possible!” I gasped, darting behind a huge oak tree, and pressing myself to the bark in terror. Oh Gods, It's not Sig... “Bull! No man can kill a bear with one hit!” Another voice shouted. “I saw it with my own eyes, I swear on Odin's beard!” The first voice answered and I felt chills crawling on my spine. Vikings! On no... “Your eyes can see a lot of things, when they're filled with mead.” A deep voice smirked, raising a loud laughter and I swallowed, trying to hold my breath and fearing that my heart sounded way too loud. What should I do? There is no where to hide, and if I run, they will hear me! “Speaking of mead, we're almost there, I see the lights!” Oh.. dear.. Gods.. they are coming this way, and I'm right in the middle of their path! I felt my heart loudly pounding in my temples, too loudly... any minute now they will step from behind those bushes and see me... What to do? I pressed myself to the tree, wishing to be invisible. Maybe if I walk around the tree as they pass me... On numbed by fear legs, I carefully moved to the side of the tree, but almost immediately jumped back at the sound of voices from the camp. “Hey, I hear them, they're coming back!” “Let's see what they brought! I'm starving!” My body froze in terror and I almost screamed when a deep 'Woo-Whooo' came from above, followed by the sound of flopping wings. I looked up at the still lightly moving branch and the decision came on it's own. Before I thought of what I was going to do once I got on the tree, my hands pulled me up, feet pushing and just a few seconds before the men came out to the clearing I was off the ground. “Nice catch! What took you so long?” Two men with torches stepped under the tree from the lake side and I held my breath. Please don't look up... I pressed my body to the branch, watching in dread as a few more men ran from the campsite. Thankfully, they were all too busy looking at their approaching friends and after a short greeting they all moved to the fires. I carefully exhaled and unclenched my whitened fingers from the branch, moving to the base and looking around. What I saw sent a cold flash through my body. The camp was still in the middle of being set up and was filled with men. A huge ship stood in the water just off the shore, and two small boats were approaching with more men on them. Before I could comprehend my situation, the axes took to the smaller trees around me, filling my body with pain and pushing all cognitive thoughts out. I covered my ears, shaking with every hit as if sharp blades were digging into my own flesh. I lost track of time, forgetting everything in the excruciating agony and when the pain subsided, letting me out of stupor, what I saw made my heart dive into the pit of my stomach in panic. The camp spread inland, surrounding the oak I was hiding in and cutting all routes for escape. Multiple fires lit the area, laughter and voices filling the air, leaving me feel like an animal trapped by hunters. But as the motion around reached it's peak, I decided to move closer to the main trunk, hoping that they wouldn't see me, too busy with their preparations. As I moved higher, my braid caught on a branch and I reached to release it from the tree's grip. My fingers touched the silky fabric and I gasped. Wait! I have my ribbon! Come on, glow, I'm in danger! Make them all fall asleep! I squeezed the silk in my hand, closing my eyes, but nothing happened. A loud laugh came from below, followed by a light breeze and I opened my eyes with a sigh. You probably can't take on so many men anyway... I'm stuck here.. I looked around and my eyes fished out a dark elongated spot right between the split of the branches above me. I moved to the next branch, trying to be quiet, but the next move almost made my water sack drop off my belt and I had to twist to catch it. I stopped for a second, slowing down my heart and making sure no one was looking in my direction, then continued. Once I got to the split, I found a shallow hollow that wasn't big enough to fit me, to my disappointment. I did my best, pushing my upper back and my head into it and nestled my butt onto the fork of the tree limbs. At least here my white hair and white dress will be hidden, thank Gods my pants are dark brown... When I felt absolutely secure and balanced I let myself relax and pulled the last miserly piece of a honeycomb out to settle my stomach, infuriated by the smell of cooking meat below. Soon the commotion in the camp subsided and the voices quieted down, most of the vikings spreading around the fires and getting comfortable for the night, as I started to yawn. I pushed the now empty bag I made from the ripped part of my dress behind my head and started to slowly drift into dream land. “I don't know why you keep taking that boy with you, he has his own father.” A voice from below made me open my eyes. “His father has no time for him, some one has take on the role... besides, I enjoy his company, he is a very smart boy.” I held a sigh. At least he has a father... I don't even have a memory of my real father... and the one that raised me spent more time with his son... “You need a son, your own son, Helgi. None of us will hold it against you if you find a woman who can give you what our sister failed to do. We all know she can't have anymore kids after your daughter was born, I know it's an honor to be married to a princess, but...” The deep voice pulled me out of my sad thoughts. “I didn't marry her for the title and you know it, Truvor.” “Either way, as I see it, a barren wife is as useful as a broken sword. Find a woman who can bear you sons.” “Sons... is that all you ever want from a woman?” “That and the process of making them.” The deeper voice smirked and continued. “Then there is food, clothing, a clean house, taking care of minor things when I'm gone, not interfering with my business, not whining... not constantly being in my field of vision, but there in a second if I need something. What else are women for?” “How about love?” The one who was called Helgi questioned. “Love? I love my wife plenty, I love her every night, when I'm home and sometimes if I don't feel like going to the slaves part of the house, I love her more than once.” The other man giggled and I rolled my eyes. That would've been my life if I would've marry that pig, Stanislav. That viking sure sounds like him. Same views on women... “You don't know what real love is, my brother. I feel sorry for you.” “You feel sorry for me? I have a wife who gave me two sons and a daughter, plus I have seven children by my slaves and what do you have? A barren wife and nothing else! You don't even keep any slave girls!” The deep voice hissed. “Uncle Helgi, uncle Truvor! Look what Frodi made for me!” A boy's voice entered the conversation below. “So he finally stopped shitting his pants? I swear, first Ulvar, then you, then Frodi... it's like all of the sudden all my men became as skittish as a bunch of toddlers! And now they're trying to wash it all off with booze. Speaking of... I better go make sure Ulvar is not too drunk to remember to post the guards.” Truvor's voice rambled. “May the Gods guard you from mares in your sleep, uncle Truvor!” The boy said and the voice of the one called Truvor growled with irritation. “Helgi, you have to stop filling the boy's head with all those stories. He needs to be a fearless warrior, just like his father, not a priest! I have to talk to Rurik when we get back, he have to send you to a training camp, you're not a little boy anymore.” His voice followed, fading to distance footsteps and after a pause the boy's voice mumbled. “I don't want to be like my father, and I don't want to go to the camp. I want to stay with you, be like you, uncle Helgi.” “Never mind him, boy, he's just in a bad mood.” “I know... I never saw him so mad and scared at the same time.” “Truvor? Scared?” “Yep, he's trying very hard not to show it though, screaming at everyone, but I know for sure he was very scared. He has a habit of pulling on his earlobe when he's afraid, aunt Rogneda told me that. He did it when he was a child and storms used to scare him. That woman... I accidentally overheard uncle Truvor talking to her. She scared him for sure, saying that she would kill him if he tries to hold her against her will. Didn't you noticed, he kept pulling on his earlobe while talking to you?” I heard a smile in the boy's voice. “Hm... that woman managed to push a fear into Truvor's heart...? How did I miss that?” “Haven't you felt that from the moment she's stepped on board, everyone changed? When we were sitting at the table it was so obvious... Rognar suddenly said he would go on that trip with Gilli when they get home, even though he said that it was a suicide mission before. Floki started jumping at every loud sound and barely lasted though the meal before hiding in the back, praying. He said he was convinced that something bad would happen and he would die. Agnar became so generous that he even gave his favorite knife to his brother. They all got... I don't know, better... or worse...” The boy grew quiet and after a pause his voice came back. “It even reminded me of that story you told me. Remember, the one about Heldi Hundingsbane, when the Valkyrie showed up to save his life? She didn't have her armor on but was so beautiful, he knew right away who was in front of him. And remember how everyone around felt their deepest fears or suddenly became brave and spoke up against the Earl? It was like that.” The boy's voice paused again and came back a little shaky. “It fact it was exactly like that... and she was very beautiful... and Odin's raven was with her... Is that why you told Uncle Truvor to treat them as honored guests? You knew who she was, didn't you? You knew she was a Valkyrie?” The boy gasped and I almost fell off the tree. Oh my Gods! He's talking about Sig!!! “A Valkyrie? No... I... I didn't feel anything from her... I felt that she is bright and pure... and a fearless warrior... but I didn't push further... the raven warned me not to...” “Don't you see, Odin was protecting his Shield Maiden! She is a Valkyrie! All signs point to it! The raven, the Frigg's falcon that was screaming above the ship, and the change in the men!” “I thought that the raven was protecting her prisoner... not her... but... maybe I was too busy concentrating on him to feel anything else...” Her prisoner! Oh my Gods, it was her!!! “Only a Valkyrie could've scared uncle Truvor.” “That's true... not many people managed to push fear into his heart... but I doubt she was a Valkyrie, Ingvar. Demigods.. they don't just show themselves to anyone...” I heard Helgi's voice. “She was a Valkyrie, I'm sure of it, becuase I felt it... just like the others, you know... I felt so strong and so powerful, like a hero... like her eyes were making me feel invincible... I even thought...” The boy lowered his voice. “What?” “I though that when we get back to the north shore, I would go to my father and... and tell him, that if he ever hits my mother again, I will kill him.” I heard the metal notes in the boy's quiet voice, then he sighed and continued with sad tone. “I never did... whatever I felt at that moment was gone with her... and when I saw him screaming at someone... I got scared... You think that makes me a coward?” “No... no it doesn't. You know he would've beat you and your mother bloody for that. It wasn't cowardly... it was just... too early... You are not ready yet... not strong enough to stand up to your father.” “One day I will be.” The boy stated and after a short pause I heard his voice again. “Who do you think that viking with her was? Maybe she was taking him to Valhalla?” “Any viking would be honored to go to Valhalla, no need for ties.” “Did you feel anything from him?” “I did... I felt something I've never felt before...” “Like what?” “Like I'm not allowed to read him, like he is shielded... all I saw was this bright fog surrounding him... almost like a radiance...” “Maybe that was the Valkyrie's protection?” “No... it was coming from him... he felt stronger... more powerful than her...” “You mean... like if he was a God?” The boy gasped and I smiled. “A God...? No... no... he was just a man... a very deep and interesting man... who...” Helgi grew quiet and in a few seconds I heard his voice again. “He can't be... it's impossible...” A long pause and a whisper. “I'll be damned...” Yep, you met the almighty Thor himself. I smiled and then added with a sigh. And you have a nymph hiding in a tree right above you... a lost, powerless nymph, who doesn't know where she belongs... I drifted into my own sad thoughts and the voices below drifted into the background, slowly vanishing into the distance. The fires below were slowly devouring wood, hungrily crackling, the night breeze twirling the sparkling ashes up into the dark sky and my eyes followed their dance, rising to the stars. Somewhere up there... somewhere between the stars, in the beautiful floating island with glowing waters and golden castles... somewhere by that magnificent tree... there were green eyes that were glowing with so much love looking at me... I swallowed and whispered to the bright line in the milky cloud of stars. I want to go home, I want to find you... I just hope, you will be happy to see me... I closed my eyes, remembering my dream, remembering the way I felt, feeling the warmth spreading over my body, but it all vanished in a second with the scream of a woman. Why were you screaming like that? What happened to you? A wave of unbearable sadness swallowed my heart, filling my eyes with tears, and I closed my eyes, letting the salty drops run over my face. (Balder's POV) I can't believe it! My own brother... I should've known! Loki always plans trouble, he only cares about himself! And mother! Why would she see me? She knows it was all Loki's doing! Astrid and Thor must be brought back, what the fuck?! No one seems to care that they are still stuck in Midgard! I saw mother come back, but she flew across Asgard so fast, I couldn't catch up with her. By the time I made it to my parents place, she'd locked herself in her bedroom and told the maids not to let anyone in. I'm not anyone, I'm her son! I know she's pissed off at Loki and probably Thor and me too, but she could at the very least talk to me! What did she say to Thor? Why didn't she bring him back with her? And what about Astrid? Mother knows that she was fooled, it wasn't her fault, she's innocent! So why didn't mother do anything about it? Loki did it all, she can undo it! I screamed all that through the door, but it remained closed, and I had no choice but to leave, feeling deep disappointment and anger. I dropped on my bed, hitting the covers with my fists, one of the small pillows jumped, bouncing up and my fist sent it flying across the room, spreading feathers in the air. “Father is meditating in his seclusion and mother doesn't seem to care about her own sons! I can't believe it! What is wrong with my family?!” I closed my eyes and breathed in, trying to control my anger, but the fluff from the feathery blizzard in my room tickled my face, getting sucked in with the air and I sat up, sneezing and coughing. “Fuck this shit!” I jumped up, grabbing my sword and my cape and slammed the door behind me, making my way out. I can't sit there and wait until mother comes to her senses and makes something happen. Heimdall will not let me to go to Midgard and find Thor and Astrid, I can't even look at Loki right now, but there is one thing I can do. I know that mother sent the iron guard to the cave Loki spoke of, and the rest of the warriors are on high alert, but who knows how many Jotuns will come through that secret portal. I have nothing else to do anyway, I'll go up there and wait. I made my way through the darkness, lighting up my way with my glowing sword and stepped off the path, crossing a shortcut to the forest. My legs carried me through the woods, hands pushing branches aside, and soon I made my way to what looked like a solid rock wall at the end of the narrow tunnel. I breathed in and stepped into a swampy realm of mares. |

I was thinking about how I'm going to do this, since I haven't been here since 1998 and there's so much to read and comment on. So Olya, I've come up with a system... may be a little confusing, but we're gonna have to deal with it to get all my thoughts across. hehehe March 15th~ First of all, this shit made me laugh out loud. That son of a bitch! Why can't he be repulsive, or say something to offend me, or try to fight me, or run or at very least be less attractive? Hating him would've been so much easier! No shit! I know from personal experience that it is in fact IMPOSSIBLE to hate James lol. I love how it's like a NATURAL instinct for Astrid to play along with James, feel a connection with him. It's like fate... whether she likes it or not, she's destined to fucking love that smile and warmth and manly man manliness of James. <3 lol And when James talked about wanting to have one hand out at night for his "needs," I thought he was gonna say something else. hehehe. Loved this update! Great way to start me off again! March 26~ Oh my gods! My poor Lana, she thought her Sig was dead for a second! Ugh... I feel so bad for my Lana, all of these people, she's confused and is just figuring out something so monumental! She's been an outcast all her life, and now she's starting to realize what she really is. And she finally discovered who Astrid really is!!! And I can't fucking wait until I read what happens when she catches up with Astrid!! I wonder what she's gonna tell her... hehehe. Okay, I'm gonna update more as I read more!!! I fucking love being back to this story!! I love you! |

So, what should I shout first? JOOOOOORDAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!! or BAAAAAAALDEEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!! Well, I love them both very much, so let them stay like that. Did I mention that I like this Helgi guy? A true, loving man, not some testosterone loaded idiot like the other guy. So, someone (and a child no less) finally read the signs properly. I'm guessing Thor will need some support during his mortal life, so I guess that is a good thing. Though, with your rebellious muses, things can go either way, you never know what lies in the next update ![]() And then... Balder!!!! Just like I imagined him! Idealistic, loving, slightly naive brother. Love him already! Such a wonderful contrast to the macho warrior from Lana's part. I can't wait for more!!! |

Thanks girls!!! @Tiff. I didn't mean to do a cliffhanger... I swear! @ Željka. Thank you!! Well... it's tiny POV, because I needed him there... but there will be more! Promise. @ Jordan. Woohooo!!!! I'm so happy to see you back, hunny!!!!!!! @ Bo. Well, children see things clearly, without over-thinking it, like adults.. hehehehe Thank you girls so much! I love you all! I had a few busy-crazy days and only managed to write a little bit. Sorry... This update is a bit short, but I'll post more after my four on the row shifts. So, there will be more Monday! And for now... back to Thor and Astrid. XXIII. (Astrid's POV) I propped my back against the rock and relaxed, letting the food settle. My eyes drifted across the fire to James, who was finishing his fish, clearly enjoying my surprising supper. When was I setting up the campfire and gathering the wood, I had no idea what I could come up with food-wise. Hunting with a sword and axe seemed impossible and without Lana's trapping skills, there was no hope for an easy catch. The idea came after I broke a dried branch and it showered me with sawdust-like rotten pieces. I was rinsing my face when I saw a few fishes, which where pulled to the shallows by the light of my torch. Making a modified spears out of sticks took only a few minutes and I came back to the fire with a fresh catch and a self-praised smile. I watched James pulling another fish off the stick, the arabesques of light dancing on his face, and my eyes moved to the fire. The flames were clinging to the logs, tightly wrapping around them, their tips pushing each other in playful competition to flicker higher, reaching to the sky, and the wood was cheering them on, moaning and crackling under their caress, and releasing bright fireflies to the stars above. My eyes got drawn to the blue flames, almost liquid-like at the base as they flared up with orange and red outbursts. The fiery rapids bubbled on the sap, it hissed as if whispering something. Their hypnotizing dance continued, pulling me in, taking over my mind. The flames grew bigger, turning bright yellow. The redness bled thought, and a high pitched scream brought a strong burning to my chest, making it hard to breath. Something heavy pushed me down, slamming my body into the rocks and a sharp pain in my side pinned me to the ground. The burning wall reached higher, and the sky caved in, spilling over, and falling down. A thick pitch-black abyss submerged me, swallowing everything around. “... stream is too fast, so I guess we have to climb those rocks. There is no other way.” A familiar voice broke the darkness and it rendered, letting through a pair of warm blue eyes. I breathed in, feeling the heaviness on my chest slowly release its grip. “What...?” I held on to the blue eyes and sat up. What was that? Did I fall asleep? “I said, we could've got a boat and followed the river, too bad it's turning west and going the wrong way and the stream is too fast. So the only way north is over those rocks.” “Right... the rocks...” I moved my hand over my chest, still feeling a light burning. “Are you okay?” Warm blue eyes turned worried. “Fine... I'm fine.” I swallowed and stood up, rubbing my arms with my hands. “I just... got lost in the fire...” “The fire does that if you look at it for too long.” The blue eyes followed me, scanning my face, and I quickly turned away, making my way to the water. I splashed cold water over my face and neck and the burning slowly subsided. The disturbed surface moved, sending stars' reflection in all directions and I sigh. What was it? Did I really get hypnotized by the flames and fall asleep? Unbelievable. I left my prisoner there with free arms and just fell asleep. 'Are you starting to feel too comfortable around him? Do you believe he will not escape? Fool. He's just waiting for the opportune moment. All those smiles you carelessly let out may have given him the idea that you like him and he plays on it, waiting for you to lower your guard.' I sighed and pulled the bottom of my shirt to wipe my face when my eyes stopped on the dark jagged line on my side. The pain... it was right here... and the burning... My hand moved from the scar to my chest, fingers sliding on uneven skin. It wasn't a dream... could it be a memory...? I quickly stood up and closed my eyes, reviving the vision in my mind. The wall of fire... the burning... the scream... the heaviness... the pain... My mind flew in burning walls of the labyrinth of my memory, faster and faster, stopping on the edge of a cliff. All I could see beyond it was the pitch black abyss. I shook my head and tried to rewind my vision, and it slammed into the wall of fire. I opened my eyes and sighed. Nothing before the fire or after the blackness... just a lost shred of time... (Thor's POV) Astrid came back to the fire and pulled the fur off her shoulders, stretching it on the ground. I tried to read what was happening with her, why she acted so strange before, but she kept her eyes lowered. “Are you sure you're okay?” “Absolutely.” Her eyes rose up to mine and the shadow of fear I saw in them earlier, when they were wide open, staring at the flames, slowly vanished. What ever is was, was gone and she was herself again. She threw a few more logs into the fire and reached for the ropes. “Time to get some rest.” She stood up and I sighed. “Would you please let me have a normal night's sleep. I will stay put, I give you my word.” She stretched the rope in her hands, turning to me. “The word of a thief?” For fuck sake, not this again! “I'm not a thief! I haven't stolen anything.” I growled and she frowned. “You stole a peaceful life from that family, you stole that little boy's childhood. Now shut up and give me your hands.” I pushed my hands together and stretched them in front of me, muttering under my breath. “Why do you care about those pitiful mort--... farmers so much anyway? They don't deserve it.” “And why not? Because they are not of your proud barbarian blood? Who's to say that this family is less worthy than a viking one?” She wrapped the rope around my wrists, tugging it tighter, her eyes fixed on mine. “Everyone is equal in their right to live and it shouldn't matter where you were born, the only thing that should matter are your deeds. That boy was not born a warrior, but he will grow up to be a great one. I will make sure he can stand up for his people, I will teach him to protect his land.” “And who said that one day with all this power you're willing to give him he won't want to make his land bigger? Take over the land next to his by the power of his sword, to become a king? If you teach him to be the best, it may come at the price of his soul. Power has that drawback, you know...” “Only if your soul and your conscience are weak and corrupted. His soul is pure, he acted like a hero, going against a grown armed man to protect his loved ones.” “He also craves revenge, it's a dangerous and strong feeling.. add that to the power of a great warrior...” She pushed my hands down and shook her head. “He lived and felt the pain, he will forever remember how scared he was, against someone so strong. If he would ever go after those men, he would not harm their families, he knows it's wrong, he lived it. Don't you get it? It was wrong! Armed men against a woman and children, enemies or not, that was wrong! Where is no glory for a warrior in that, just shame. It's a one thing to go against an army, to protect your land from invaders, and a whole other to attack a defenseless family! A true, honorable warrior would never do anything like that, no man who deserves respect would do that. If he becomes a king one day, he will be a wise one. One that people respect, not fear.” “All kings are feared, that is how they rule.” “Only bloodthirsty tyrants rule by fear, and they are hated by all. They force their rule with their sword, spreading fear, only to encase themselves in a cage of their own doing. They can't trust anyone, and they're often betrayed by their own people. Too many wish them dead. The greatest achievement by any ruler is to be loved by his people and respected by his enemy. That and only that makes you the king of kings.” She pulled my arms down, wrapping a rope around my shoulders and I lowered my eyes, looking at the flames. 'Loved by his people and respected by his enemy. That and only that makes you king of kings.' … and God of Gods... I always questioned my father's decision, asking him why he let the Frost Giants live. They attacked us, he pushed their army back all the way to their world, he wounded their king, but he didn't kill him. He took their power source and left. It was in his power to destroy them all, to erase their world forever, it was easy when they had nothing against him, but he didn't. I always thought it was a weak decision, to let our enemies live, growing stronger each day and planing for another war... But he said that a whole race should not pay for the mistakes of their King. Only now, hearing those words from my little Valkyrie, I understood the wisdom of my father's words, only now I understood why he let them live... |

@ Tiffany. Thank you!!! Sorry... I didn't have time to finish this part, but here is more!!! @ Željka. You are not repeating yourself!!! And yes, if only people lived by that... the world would be different... Thank you girls!!! I had some time to write and finished the other part of that chapter! And... it's short again, but, it has to be separated form the next chapter, so... here is goes. (Rodimir's POV) Mila's laugh flew over the green meadow when I picked her up, spinning. She held on to my shoulders, throwing her head back and letting her long, light hair spread in the wind. I smiled, putting her down and she pulled out of my arms. “Come here, let me kiss you.” I reached for her, but she smiled playfully, fixing her flower crown and biting her lip. I made a step forward, but she turned and ran across the meadow, laughing. “Catch me first!” The tall grass moved in waves, letting her through and I watched her turning with a smile by the line of forest and waving at me. “Come on, Rodimir! Catch me!” She giggled as I started to run after her and vanished into the trees. “Oh I can catch you so easily!” I laughed, running under the green canopy. The golden ribbons of the sun's rays where pushing through the crowns of the trees, reaching to the ground, and sparkling with the colorful wings of butterflies. My feet carried me over the soft green carpet that shined with drops of dew, and the leaves above my head moved, whispering into the light breeze and repeated the echo of my wife's voice. “Yoooou caaaan't caaatch meee!” Her laugh bubbled, bouncing in the branches and I smiled, following the voice and screaming back. “Yes, I can!” As I ran further, the forest grew more dense, letting less and less sun through the thick foliage. Soon the sun's rays were gone, replaced by spiderwebs, and the forest around me turned dark and gloomy. The green carpet under my feet turned into scorched dirt, and the air slowly filled with fog. No longer could I hear the happy laugh of my wife ahead of me, and I stopped, looking at the crooked ghost-like, black forest around me. “Mila? Where are you?” The crow answered with a loud cackle, flying off the branch above me and I looked up, tripping over something on the ground and falling down. My body landed on something cold and soft, the fog moved and to my horror I saw a pale face of a man with blue lips. His open and frozen eyes were looking up to the dark sky. I jumped up, feeling my heart pounding fast in my chest with fear. “What is this...?” A loud 'caaw' was followed by flapping wings before the air broke with multiple crows lifting into the air with chilling screams. Their wings moved the fog, ripping it in patches over the ground, which was covered in dead bodies, and I recognized the people of my village, still faces twisted in pain. “Mila!” Panic gripped my body as I frantically moved between the copses. “Mila!!! Why are you not answering?” I stood still, desperately waiting for an answer, and the fog thickened, surrounding me and covering its horrid secret. I let another plea into the air. “Mila! Please answer me!” My heart was beating fast, mind frozen with fear for my wife, when suddenly I felt movement. The fog flashed with dark shadows and at that moment I heard my Mila's terrified scream. “Rodimir!” The shadows jumped at me, multiple hands gripping at my body, pushing me down, covering my lips and dropping me to my knees, no matter how much I fought, their grip was stronger. I pulled with all the strength I had left, pulling away from the hands to let out a scream. “Mila, run!!!” The fog moved, pulling away, and I swallowed when I saw a dark warrior approaching me. My eyes caught something light behind his figure, and as he took another step, I felt my heart diving down in horror. My wife was standing on her knees, pushed down as I was, and two dark figures stood on both sides of her, pulling her arms back. “Mila!” She quietly sobbed in answer and I pulled stronger, but the iron grips held me in place. “Leave her alone! Let her go!” The dark warrior stopped in front of me and I saw glowing red eyes behind the face plate of his helmet. “Do what you want with me, but do not harm her! Please, I beg of you, let her go!” He looked at me and rose his hand, giving a sign to his men and one of them stepped aside from my wife, pulling a curved saber above her head. The other pulled her hands up behind her back, making her bend forward. I squirmed, feeling the sharp claws digging into my flesh, and my heart heaved as my lungs pushed out a scream. “Astrid, you promised me my wife would not be harmed!! Save her!” Someone's hands pulled a cloth across my mouth, silencing me again, and time slowed down with the beats of my heart, unfolding the events in slow motion. The hand with the saber started to move down and when my heart was ready to stop, the darkness split with lightning bolts, shaking the air with thunder. Aurora’s lights rained to the ground, followed by the heavy sound of horse hooves, bringing it closer. The lightning came together into one glowing point of bright light on the chest of the fearless rider, who was galloping right at us. Her hand rose with a bight sword, shattering the dark figures by my wife into pieces. The sword rose up again and the dark warrior that stood by me dropped to my feet. The claws pulled out of my flesh, releasing their grip and I ran to my wife, pulling her into my arms. “Are you okay?” She rose her tear filled eyes to me and nodded. The stormy steed stopped by us, and I let go of my wife, dropping to my knees. “Thank you, my Goddess!” My wife joined me, lowering to the ground by my side. “Thank you!” The winged stallion danced with its back legs and reared, spreading its wings, and the fog pulled away the darkness, restoring the light. Our village, burned down to the ground stood around us, the dead bodies of the people we knew all our life were spread on the ground. Men, women, children, no one was spared but us. My wife gasped, pressing closer to me and I allowed myself to look up into the clear blue eyes of the Divine Deity. “My Goddess... what happened to them?” She looked at me and rose her hand, pointing to the ground, my eyes followed, stopping on the warrior with a horse tail on the tip of his helmet, his hand was still holding a curved saber. I ground my teeth and let out a whisper full of hatred. “Khazars...” “My Goddess, you had the power to save them... why didn't you?” I heard my wife's voice and held my breath in dread for her boldness, squeezing her hand. The Goddess looked at us and shook her head. “They didn't ask me to save their loved ones.” The steed snorted loudly, spreading its wings and lifting up in the air, and we rose our heads, watching it soaring higher and higher, until it turned into a bright blue star. My wife pulled on my shoulder. “You have to tell them Rodimir, you need to let people know about our Goddess... you hear me, Rodimir?... Can you hear me? Wake up! Rodimir!” I sat up, opening my eyes and breathing in. Dream.. it was a dream... “Oh thank Gods! Are you okay? You were moving so much and calling my name. ” My wife's worried face was by my side, her hands holding mine. “I saw a strange dream... it all felt so real...” My voice pushed through my dry throat. “What did you see?” I pushed my feet to the side of the bed and turned, reaching for the cup of water on the windowsill, my eyes moved to the window and my hand froze midair. The bright blue star was shining above the horizon, which was already starting to blush with the coming sunrise. The sky above it was still dark, almost black higher up, like a cape of hair of the Goddess of the Wishing Star, spreading in the wind. My eyes widened and my wife moved to my side. “What did you see, my love?” I breathed in and sighed. “I see her... The Goddess Astrid...” “You saw her in your dream?” “She saved you once again... saved both of us...” I paused as my eyes moved to the river, then to the hills, and stopped on Perun's altar, which was proudly towering at the top of the cliff. “I have to tell people about her, make them believe... so they can pray for their loved one's safety.” “You tried... remember.. no one believed you...” “I have to try harder...” I lowered my eyes and swallowed, feeling chills as the vision of the ground, covered with dead bodies rose up in my mind. “I will make an altar and place it by Perun... I have a few days before the celebration of the spring equinox. People from many villages will gather on those hills, bring offerings to the Gods... I will tell them about Astrid. Tell them my story...” |

Oh boy! I am smiling from ear to ear in anticipation of what the next update could possibly bring, depending on which POV thread you choose to work on. ANY of them would be fantastic, but I have a feeling...and I'm not telling you what it is, but I can't wait to see if I'm right! |
