And now for the continue...

(Lana's POV)

The rain seemed to get stronger as the wind picked up, and despite Jason's cape, which was covering me head to toe, I couldn't help but shiver. A few more long minutes and I felt the water starting to pull in the indent under my body. I heard the noise of movement and a muffled swearing from the side of the pier and sighed. I guess nature itself is trying to tell me I'm wrong. He is a wolf hunter and I'm mad at him for that, but... somehow he is a good guy too... He didn't have to do this, and now, because of my stubbornness he is freezing himself. I sighed again and slowly got up, pulling the cape over my head and making my way to the shelter. Jason rose his eyes at me as I stepped, and opened his lips to say something, but I cut him off.

“Not a word. I just don't want you to blame me if you catch a cold.”

He looked at me and hid his smile, moving to let me in. I took the cape off, covering him and laid down, pulling as far as the shelter allowed to the rocks of the pier. He laid down too, silently pulling half of the cape over me.

We lay quietly, listening to the weather unleash its fury on the forest and lake, drumming on the boards over our heads. Neither of us said anything or moved, keeping our bodies from touching and soon the repeating sound of the water drops carried my mind away into the fog of the dream world.

---

The sound of rhythmic soothing beats of the rain drops right under my ear... one after another... tum-tum... tum-tum... tum-tum... Something warm softly moved my cheek up and down, and another tum-tum followed. Something was tickling my fingers and moved them, feeling silky softness. Tum-tum... tum-tum... A line of warmth was covering my side, wrapping around my shoulders... tum-tum... tum-tum... What is that? I slowly opened my eyes, staring at the gray fabric and it rose up, tightening under me with the sound of breath. I jerked my face up, quickly pulling my hand out of chestnut curls and froze in horror, staring at shamefully close to me face of a wolf-hunter. His eyelashes twitched and the face came alive with a somewhat hazed blue gaze.

I panicked, yanking my body back to the rocks out of the embrace of his arm and he promptly withdrew it, quickly sitting up and hitting the roof of our shelter with his head.

“Shit...” He swore quietly, rubbing his head while his eyes glanced at my face then slid lower, and he quickly turned away and cleared his throat with a short, “Morning.”

“Morning...” I lowered my eyes, and to my dread noticed that my modified shirt-dress had twisted, crawling up during the night and now showing the top of my pants and a thin line of my stomach. A wave of heat pushed into my head and I turned my dress, yanking it down. While I was drowning in the embarrassment of my indecent exposure, Jason pushed a few boards off and quickly stood up. I followed his motion, stepping away form the shelter and turned, avoiding his eyes. My fingers pulled the ribbon off and started nervously braid my hair.

“Seems like the rain had stopped some time ago...” Came from beside me.

“Yeah... it would've been hard to walk in wet sand...” I stared straight ahead, feeling my face burning red. I wish I could just fall through that damned sand to hide my embarrassment.

“Not the best weather for walks... I thought late springs in your... rea... um... land was supposed to be warm...” By the sound of his voice, Jason was walking to the water and I turned to the road, avoiding his eyes.

“They usually are, the storm brought the cold rain and wind...” I need some of that now to stop my face from flashing red...

“At least it was short and at night... it won't interfere with our travel... but maybe it would be best to walk through the forest until the sun dries out the sand...”

“It would be muddy up there... and the sand looks well packed, it should be easy to walk...” Plus I'm sure I'll fall into a mud puddle, since I simply can't stop making a fool of myself in front of you. At least the sand is easier to brush off. I pushed the wet ground with the tip of my boot, drawing a line, and heard water splashing. I carefully turned and allowed myself a glance at the wolf-hunter. He was drying his face with his sleeve, but suddenly lowered his arm and looked at me.

“Um.. do you... you think we should try and catch a few fish for later... or maybe have a small breakfast?” He stood up, lowering his eyes and trying to wipe his hands on his pants, but they just slid over the leather. He glanced back at me and lowered his eyes again, clearly having no idea what to do with his still wet hands, since his cape was left by the pier. He shook them and finally wiped them on his chest, stretching the gray fabric and reminding me of how I woke up with my head on his chest. His eyes rose back to me, awaiting my answer, and I quickly turned away, feeling another flush of heat.

“Yeah... sure... I mean... that would be better than travel on an empty stomach... I did that for two days and it wasn't fun at all, plus it makes you walk slower... and take rest stops more often. And I prefer not to rest. I mean, I like to rest, we all need rest, but not to often... just like normal short rests. Plus, you never know what the next rest stop will be like... I mean later on, not like I'm planning to stop often, but this lake will end soon and there will be no fish at all... ” STOP SAYING REST. I pulled on my braid, silencing my mumbling and turned to the water, as another wave of heat made it's way to my face. I should just drown myself, that would be the best and that would stop the blushing.

“So... if you um... start the fire... I'll go and try to catch something... or the other way around...” I heard his voice behind me.

“Sounds good...” I pushed out and lowered my face into hands full of water, eager to feel refreshing cold on my burning cheeks.

Whatever you do just go and do it somewhere far, and let me be so I can stop this stupid redness! The last thing I need is for you to see just how embarrassed I am, because it makes things even worse, standing here with strawberry colored skin from my chest to the roots of my hair!

“Um... which one? You make the fire, and I fish? Or the other way?” Jason's voice sounded like he was standing right behind me and that made me jerk, pouring the water from my palms onto my shirt.

“Oh shit!” I jumped up with a gasp.

“Are you okay?” Came from behind and I quickly bent down to the water, covering my wet shirt with my knees, and pretending that everything was normal.

“I'm fine... just didn't realized the water was that cold.” I turned and pushed a smile onto my face, feeling the wet fabric clinging tightly to my chest. Great... now the white thin fabric of my shirt is wet and almost see through! I started purposely slowly wash my hands, but he was still standing by me and I remembered that he was waiting for my answer and looked up, covering my chest with arms crossed over my bent knees.

“What difference does it make, who does what?”

“I just don't want you to get mad at me again, like you did yesterday...”

You were hurting that tree! There was a perfectly dead branch right next to the one you cut with your stupid sword. I took a deep breath and looked at the blue eyes of the wolf-hunter. I have to stop getting mad at him. It's not like he could've known or feel which branch is dead... I sighed and softened my voice.

“You get the fish, I'll start the fire.”

“Deal. You clearly know how to find the dried wood better.” His lips moved into an emerging smile, but froze, not sure if it was okay to continue, and I smiled back.

“And you're better at fishing. You got two with one hit.”

“Let's see if I can do better today.” His lips moved on into a full smile, and he returned to the fire pit, pulling the spears he made last night out of the sand. I watched him jumping over the boards and pulling himself on top of the pier. He smiled again at me and walked to the end of it, lowering on one knee and looked at the water. I carefully stood up, keeping my arms crossed over my chest, and glanced at Jason's figure, whispering to myself.

“Lets hope we can both do better from now on... I, for one, have to stop getting mad at you. And I have to stop embarrassing myself in front of you.”

I sighed and quickly made my way to the forest.

This is great  but what does AU mean? ? (Srry I'm very new here :P )
Thanks!
AU means Alternate Universe, aka they are not a metal band members. For example here Metallica boyz are Norse Gods. Can you imagine James as Thor? I was aiming at Justice-Black Era James... :drool :drool :drool Those wavy hair... that fearless look... :drool :drool Oh... dear Gods.......

Hm.. where was I? Oh yeah, so not all members are here, at least yet... who knows what comes to my crazy head. :biggrin

So, Cliff is Odin, yep, the wise father.
Jason is Balder, and Dave.. well, Dave is Loki.
Hope that clears it up.

Actually it's my first AU fic.. usually I write as they are, the Metallica boyz.

Thanks again for reading!

Is that how long it was? Christmas? Wow...
Sorry... All this ordeal with the hacked forum and restoration and clean up, all between crazy 'flu season' shifts..

I hope the long update will make up for the wait.

So... let's peek back into Asgard, shall we?

XXXII.

(Elayne's POV)

Eos crossed the room, nervously peeking through the window for the umpteenth time and walking back to the opposite wall, then coming back to the window.

“What's taking her so long? Sol will wake up any minute now!”

“She can't just grab it and run, she's not alone there, remember?”

“I should've done it myself, we’re running out of time! Today is the last day of the two she gave us, it has to be done today!”

Us? I looked at my friend, feeling a pin of anger. How is it ‘us’? I mean, honestly, we had nothing to do with it, we don't have to do any of this. It's just a favor to a friend, it's not our problem, why should we care about some mortals? We’re putting ourselves in danger for her, but maybe she doesn't deserve it. So far all we’ve gotten are impatient remarks instead of a thank you! I pressed my lips together and hissed.

“You could've done it yourself, and you could've stole that sun-proof bag from Sol's jewelry box that took me forever to find. I had to pretend to be all 'oh my Sun, my Goddess, your jewelry simply must be cleaned, so it shines as bright as your beauty'. I spent all night cleaning Sol's gazillion shiny pieces while you and the rest of the maids had fun at the feast. And Aline had to do some serious ass kissing to be among the three chosen ones to tuck our mistress into bed.”

“Aura just poisoned Sol's mind about me, it's not my fault that our mistress doesn't want me around and I'm no longer allowed in her chambers. And don't tell me you didn’t have fun trying on all those jewels while cleaning them!”

As the last words left her lips the window of the Sun Goddess’ bedroom, which was right across from ours, lit up. Eos froze, gripping into the silk on her cape.

“Oh no, she's awake!”

A light squeaking noise made us both turn swiftly, and we saw Aline, closing the door tightly behind her.

“Did you get it?” Eos breathed out and Aline smiled, pulling out the small bag I acquired the night before from under her cape. As the bag moved in her hand, the black satin dimly lit up with the golden treasure hidden in it.

“Got it. It wasn't easy. First, the torture of listening to all those mind numbing compliments that Aura and Pearline showered Sol with, and coming up with some of my own to be at the same level. Then, I had to wait for both of them to fall asleep and it took forever. They couldn't stop blabbering about nothing and I had to pretend to be amazed at their stupid stories, joining them in gossiping about the countless sunrays and Gods! Then I had to wait, fighting the strongest urge to sleep, and sneak from under my covers in the dark, making my way to Sol's chambers. I thought my heart would jump out when I found and yanked the needed hair from her head, praying that she wouldn't wake up. But I got it and you owe me one.”

“Oh, Aline.. you, my friends, helped me so much, and as soon as all this is over, I'll find a way to repay you both.” Eos carefully took the bag, turning it in her hands, then lifted her eyes to me.

“So, how does it work again?”

“You have to connect the ends, so it's like a circle, like an orb, and when you see the first sparks, quickly place it right on her head, so it covers both ears and sits right above the eyebrows. You must do it before the sparks stop for it to work, and you have to step out of your ray to do it. It only works for a few hours, and only on humans, so don't waste your time trying to confine Thor with it.”

Eos looked at me, swallowing nervously.

“Sounds complicated... maybe it's better if you do it... you are the only one who’s used it before. Me and Aline will take on Thor. You'll blind the Valkyrie and then paralyze her with Sol's hair.”

I looked at Aline and stepped back from the outstretched arm holding the black bag.

“I don't think so. First of all, I don't want to be all out in the open, out of my ray. I mean, I know humans can't see me, but the Valkyrie.. even if she’s been turned mortal... what if she sees me? Plus, to be within reach of her sword... I know they say that there are no weapons that can harm us...” I shivered inside, remembering the horrid blade that Grundroth had threatened me with, and continued. “... but... the Valkyries’ swords are like no other, they were cast with a secret enchantment, they were made to protect Odin from anyone and anything in this universe and beyond... they say they can kill anyone.”

Eos withdrew her arm and pushed the bag into her corset, breathing out a sigh. “Anyone? They sure can't kill Odin...”

“They say they can, I mean it has to be a fatal blow, like through the heart or cutting off the head...” Aline joined in and Eos looked at her.

“I wonder why they’d make a weapon that can harm them... they are supreme Gods, they shouldn't put themselves in harm’s way...”

“Well, they do have enemies who are as strong... so their weapons have to be deadly enough... I guess what can kill them is the deadliest thing of all...” Aline mumbled, turning to me, and I just shrugged my shoulder in answer. Eos sighed again and covered her dress with the cape.

“Okay... Let's hope I don't have to find out first hand the deadly power of the Valkyrie's sword. I'll take Astrid and you two take Thor. Remember, you have to make him move to that funnel I made in the hills. It goes all the way to the bottom, I burned the sides of those rocks into a glass-like state, there is no way he can get out. But even if he does, he has no powers, so he won't be able to find her in the labyrinth of the sunworshipers’ caves and passes. Let's go.”

I looked at Aline and she looked at me, neither of us moved. Eos opened the door and turned to us.

“Come on, we have to be in the first line of rays that reach Midgard!”

I pulled on the sides of my golden cape, glancing at Aline, and she turned her head to the window, then sighed and turned to Eos.

“Eos... don't take this the wrong way... we are your friends and all that, but... this is as far as we go.”

Eos let go of the door. “You mean... you aren't going with me?”

I sighed and shook my head, and Eos moved her eyes to Aline, finding the same wordless answer.

“But...” Her big, golden eyes return to me. “I can't do it all alone... I can't take both of them on at the same time...”

I lowered my head, feeling very uncomfortable under my friend's begging gaze.

“Look, Eos, we helped you as much as we could, but...” I rose my eyes to Eos’ face. “You are asking us to put ourselves in real danger. Thor, although powerless at the moment, IS still a Supreme God, not to mention Odin's son and... The all-knowing All Father sees it all...” I got stuck on my words, watching Eos’ lips twitch.

Aline cleared her throat and stepped forward. “What Elayne is trying to say is... we can't be seen with you in Midgard during the attack on Thor, I'm sorry.”

Eos lowered her head and bit her lip, then rose her tearful eyes to us. “I understand... It's my daughter... my fight, not yours... Thank you, thank you both for all your help.”

She lowered her eyes and stepped out of the room, closing the door behind her.

I sighed and looked at Aline. “That 'thank you' sure sounded more like 'fuck you both.' I can't believe it! After all we've done she still ended up making me feel guilty! Did she really understand why we aren't going? I mean, seriously? Can she get it into her head what exactly she is asking us to do? And for what? For a bunch of humans? Asking us to attack the son of the God of Gods, it’s like asking us to jump into Fenrir's mouth. Because that’s where we would all end up when Odin finds out who dared to assault his son, or when Thor gets his powers back, whichever comes first. Can't she see that it's too high of a price?”

“She's just blinded by her love for her daughter...” Aline sighed and I blew up.

“Mortal half daughter! Who will die sooner or later anyway! Can't Eos see it? It's not worth it! It wasn't even worth risking to be caught by Sol when I stole that stupid bag from the jewelry room!”

“You say it isn’t, but you still helped her. Not to mention it was you who remembered about the power of a few special pure gold hairs of Sol to paralyze mortals.” Aline smirked at me.

“I was only throwing out ideas... and only helped her to the point of putting myself in real harm’s way, just as you...”

I grew quiet, remembering the night right after Sol made her ultimatum to Eos. Was it my idea or... was it sent to me... I never had such life like remembrance dreams before. The beautiful city of Sumer... Mesopotamia... the gold inlay throne room of Ibbi-Sin.. the unlucky king who made a remark that his gold shines brighter than the sun Goddess... war at its peak... enemy soldiers moving beyond the wall of the city... I walk up the stairs, unnoticed by the mortals that filled the room, awaiting a command from their leader. My hands lowering the brightly sparkling halo on the king's head... and a few minutes later, his empire died... I could hear the victory screams of the Elamites, saw them fill the palace.. watched how the helpless, paralyzed king was placed in chains and driven in a cage through the city... saw Sol’s eyes glowing with joy and satisfaction... and then I woke up...

I woke up, repeating my thoughts out loud... that Sol's hair can paralyze Astrid, but... were those my thoughts? Was the silvery figure by my window real, and not just a shadow as I thought? Was it my thoughts that I said out loud or was I repeating someone's whisper...? Wait... silvery figure... shimmering in the moon light... was it... Mani? I froze in shock, but almost immediately smirked to myself.

Pfff, right... now you really are dreaming! Why would Mani help Eos? Well... the same reason I did... nah, he would just use his powers.. whatever they are, he wouldn't bother with sending dreams to some sun ray. I sighed and drew my eyes to the small piece of the dark sky in the upper corner of the window. Oh.. if he would've really come down to my bedroom... watching me sleep... whispering to me... I felt my heart starting to beat faster and my lips slid into a smile. Oh... Holy Power of Sun... I would give anything for that...

I dropped out of my thought as the bell announced that Sol is calling her rays. Both of us walked to the door, and I quickly glanced at Aline, placing my hand on the door knob and smiled.

“Besides... I didn't do it just for her or her daughter... I had my own reasons...”

My friend turned to me.

“Would that reason be the same as the reason why the moonlight makes you grin like an idiot? You’re still dreaming of Mani as King, aren't you?” Aline’s words made my smile widen.

“Not dreaming. Waiting. Look, it doesn't matter what happens today in Midgard, Sol will be accused of murder or attempted murder of Astrid. Thor and the Supreme Gods will punish her. She's done, history. And the only other God with the power to fly the Sun's chariot is Mani.”

“If Sol will be the only one to blame, then why did you insisted on not going with Eos to Midgard?”

“Because rays that are directly involved in this thing will share Sol's faith. Soldiers die before the generals, remember? If Thor or Astrid see us, we are toast long before the Gods take their fury out on Sol.”

“You mean Eos is doomed?”

“Eos is different, she, unlike us, has something on her side.”

“Like what?”

“She's under the protection of 'parental insanity.’ She will be forgiven, Sol gave her no other choice. Odin is a wise King, he would not punish a woman who acts out of love, acting all alone in a desperate attempt to save her child. ”

“That is IF she will be brought before Odin's judgment... and not stand alone in the way of a boiling with anger Thor.”

“He's powerless, remember? He can't do anything to her at the moment.”

“Sooner or later he will get his powers back and then... poor Eos will perish... unless...” Aline eyes sparkled with secret excitement.

“Unless what?” I narrowed my eyes at my friend. She'd better not come up with something that would ruin my hopes for Mani as the Sun King!

“Unless we protect her.” Aline's lips stretched into a wide smile.

“And how are we supposed to protect her from Thor?”

“Easy, we'll tell him the truth.” She breathed out and I screamed at her.

“You are as crazy as she is! Going in front of Thor when he is mad with fury?!!”

“Chill! We don't have to go in front of Thor, we can send an anonymous message to him.. or even better, to someone wiser... someone who'd understand a mother's heart. We'll send it to Frigg!”

“In that case, we could've just went with Eos, since you’re trying to put us in the middle of it anyway. I don't want to be involved!”

“Look, no one will know it's us. We'll send it with... I don't know.. something not connected with sun rays... like a bird or... or a...”

“Butterfly! Nymphs and Elves use butterflies for messages!” I shouted and Aline gripped my shoulders.

“Now you’re thinking! That way no one will suspect us in a billion years! We'll write all about Sol's plan to kill Astrid and tell everything about our Mistress’ ultimatum to Eos!”

“Okay... okay, that might just work... we need to add some words from Sol's mouth about her being above the Supreme Gods and how she said she is the most important...”

“...not to mention most beautiful Goddess in the whole pantheon... Frigg is a woman, that might get her boiling...”

“Oooh and we should say that Sol always screams about it on every corner!”

“Add to that that Frigg and Odin probably already know about her attempt to burn Thor!”

“Aline, you are a genius!” I clapped my hands, jumping with excitement. “That’s it! I'll find a blue butterfly, and you compose the letter. Just don't put one word about Mani. Then we'll release our messenger over the meadow in the East gardens, so it can't be traced back to us, and...”

Aline pulled me into happy jumping in the middle of the room. “And we'll save Eos!”

“And get rid of our overheated Mistress!”

“We'll save the day! We'll save everyone!”

She suddenly stopped, letting me out of her arms. “Wait... wasn't there a story about butterflies.. how they were punished by the Gods for being slow? Remember? The butterfly was late with an important message and for that Gods punished them, making them spend half of their lives as disgusting worms.”

“You mean caterpillars.”

“What's the difference? Wiggly, ugly thing... eww.” Aline shook with disgust. “Anyway.. by the time Frigg gets the message Thor would be imprisoned in that funnel-trap Eos made and the Valkyrie will be dead...”

“We can't help her. There is no way to help her and help Eos at the same time. I hate the idea that Astrid has to die, but... really, if you look at it from a different point of view... maybe she'd welcome death.”

“Why would someone welcome death?”

“Look... even though she was only a Demigod... almost every single person in all the magic realms have the deepest respect for Valkyries... some are even afraid of the fearless shield maidens of Odin. And now... now she’s just a mortal, stripped of her power, her immortality... If you ask me, I would rather die than live the rest of my suddenly unbelievably shortened and robbed of magic life, especially if I had to live it among those limited humans, and more so be one of them! Would you ever want that fate? As for death... who knows where the diminished Valkyrie’s soul will go... with her seed dead... she's not a nature spirit anymore, her soul won't join with Yggdrasil... but.. she is a great warrior. And where do all the great warriors' souls go? Valhalla. It will be like coming back home, only in spirit form.”

“You think? What if she goes to Hel's realm? I mean she did anger the Gods...”

“Odin would never let one of his Valkyries perish in Hel's realm, even if he’s mad at her. Unlike our mistress, he cares about his shield maidens as if they are his own children.”

“That's true... so you think we’re kind of doing her a favor by letting her die?”

“In the way... yeah, I think we are.”

Here is more, and this time it's Thor and Astrid. Did you miss them? :biggrin

XXXIII.

(Thor's POV)

A bird flew somewhere above us, loudly announcing the fist rays of sunrise and the warm treasure in my arms moved. I opened my eyes, holding my body still in hope that Astrid would fall back to sleep, but she pulled away, and I reluctantly let her out of my embrace, feeling that serenity slowly melting away, together with the warmth from her body. I swallowed the strong urge to pull my little Valkyrie back into my arms and sighed, watching her getting up. I wish everything was easier... I wish I could tell her... The bird screamed again as if mocking me and it almost sounded like 'Why not?'

I glared in the direction where the sound came from.

Because! Because of reasons! Because I know she doesn't feel anything more than friendship.

The bird flew to another rock and tilted its head to the side with another 'why not?'

I don't fucking know why not! Maybe she knows me too well, maybe I'm just not her type. All I know is I gave her plenty of opportunities, asking her out almost every day for hundreds of years and she never bought it. If she would've felt anything, anything at all, she had plenty of chances to say yes, but she didn't. That means... that means nothing. Because you’re a stupid fool and always made it sound like a half joke, and you weren't asking her out, you were asking her in... into your bed to be precise! So she may have thought that you were just joking, as always. Fuck! I'm back to square one!

“Why?” Loudly intruded my thoughts.

Because I'm not any closer to knowing if she had feelings for me, that's why! Because all my previous attempts, that I thought of as a test, don’t count! And I'm back to this torture! I'm losing my mind! I even started talking to fucking birds! Like a fucking lunatic! I looked at the stretching Astrid and felt like screaming out loud.

'Astrid, please end this torture! Just give me a sign, anything, just a little sign that you may feel something for me!!! Because you have no idea how hard it is for me! You have no idea what is going on inside of me!!!'

As an echo to my silent plea, she breathed in deeply, closing her eyes.

“Smells like a storm...”

You bet it's smells like a storm! If I had my powers right now this realm would witness a thunderstorm of the century! Because it's unbearable to see you standing right here, so close, so beautiful, and not mine! I can't stand this! I can't! I felt my fists tightening up, but Astrid opened her eyes and turned to me, and I quickly looked away to hide my emotions. My voice came out low and grumpy.

“The last thing we need is a storm. I can't stop it, remember? I have no powers in this fucking realm. So we’ll have cold water pissing down on us as we climb those fucking rocks.”

She shook her head at me and smiled. “Oh, Thor, stop being so negative! This is a beautiful realm, things happen here spontaneously, not because someone wanted a blue clear sky, or a rainbow, or because your pissiness gathered thundering clouds. This realm is wild, free, untouched by magic, and absolutely amazing!”

“What’s so amazing about things happening with no regards to how I feel?” I bit my tongue, and waved my arm in the air, pulling my time as my mind pushed a safer answer to my lips. “Things that... that don't care if I want them to happen right now or not... I don't wish for them, we don't wish for them. Like this stupid rocky canyon in our way, or the storm, or the cold.”

Well, the cold kind of came in handy... it did push you into my arms for the night...

My little Valkyrie ignored my mumbling and slowly turned, looking around.

“That's what makes it amazing. This world is not ruled by the power of wishes. No one tells trees where to grow, or cliffs where to stand, no one makes rivers change their path. Nature in its wild form rules everything here. Life finds its own ways, its own forms that aren't made by magic, like mountains, lakes, forests, not to mention the breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. Just look at this beauty!”

I glanced at the burning pink and blue sky, and as a few sun-rays pushed from behind the clouds I remembered Sol's words. 'I see everything my sun-rays see.' She'd better keep her mouth shut... If she tells anyone that I'm here, she’ll ruin our plan... I turned my face away from Sol's rays and quickly answered.

“Normal sunrise, nothing spectacular about it.”

Astrid shook her head again with a smile, clearly having no idea about my gloomy thoughts. I opened the bag and pretended to look for something, and she stepped up behind me, lowering her hands on my shoulders.

“Thor, just look, really look, take a moment, open your mind. Look how those colors play in the clouds, look at the rays pushing above them, like a golden crown. Look around you, see how everything they touch comes to life? Those rocks over there, on the opposite wall, see how the shadows play? Blackish-gray colors beyond the reach of the sun rays, and burning golden in the light?”

Yeah, Sol is good at this burning thing... I should know. I smirked to myself, thinking that if I hadn’t skipped the part about my encounter with the over praised Goddess of the Sun, Astrid wouldn't have been so cheerful about Sol's work.

“Do you see it?” Astrid peeked from behind my shoulder, and I mumbled with a sigh.

“Yeah, I see the damn burning rocks.”

“Come on Thor, you have to admit it's beautiful.”

“It's okay... I guess.” I scrunched my face and she gasped.

“Okay? It's not just okay, this world is a real masterpiece of creation. A real gem.”

“A gem of creation? You do remember Asgard, right? And I'm not even mentioning Elfheim!”

“You don't get it, do you? All other words are ruled by magic.”

“And what's wrong with magic?”

“Nothing’s wrong with it, it's just...” She let go of my shoulders and stepped aside. “It's not the same when it's all under the command of powers that interfere with the natural flow. Trees are always green and always perfect, grass is always the needed height, flowers are big and glowing. Absolute perfection in everything. It's beautiful, but boring... you never see something unexpected, something like that little tree over there, that grew crooked and at the same time beautifully twisted. It pushed through the rocks, growing on a miserly patch of dirt that was blown here by the wind. And despite the winds and rains that threaten to take its nourishing patch, it’s still there, still growing, fighting for its right to exist. It's here, now, alive and well, welcoming the warm rays of this breathtaking sunrise! And all that came into existence without magic or powers.”

“A sunrise is not exactly not made by someone's powers... it kind of is...” I started my argument but stopped when Astrid quickly turned to me. Her face far from smiling.

“If you're talking about your latest crush, the glorified Goddess of the Sun, 'kind of' are the right words. Sol doesn’t exactly sit there, meticulously highlighting just the right things at the right time for the most amazing effect. In fact, all she does is fly her big, shiny ass in her chariot over the sky and can't care less about anything but herself.” Astrid turned away and made her way to the bags, throwing behind her shoulder.

“Besides, it's your girlfriend's maids who do the beaming of the light thing, and I doubt that even they care to mix and match the colors of the clouds and rocks.”

(Astrid's POV)

I spat out my last words, feeling that the good morning feeling was gone, pushed away by a wave of irritation. He just had to bring her up! It's not enough he followed her, walking away from me the night when I needed him the most, when I wanted to ask him about the spirit. He had to talk about her here, giving her the glory for something I found beautiful! Grr! I bent down, yanking the ties on the bag, and heard Thor's voice.

“She's not my girlfriend...”

“Whatever you want to call her, a 'bed-warmer,' a 'girl for a lonely night,' or 'one more notch on the mighty belt of the God of Thunder.'” I snapped back, continuing the names for the never ending bimbos in my mind.

...A 'next in line,' a 'one of too many,' a 'night call,’ a 'nightlight'... I bitterly smirked to myself. Nightlight would fit just right, I bet her ass glows in the dark. I glared at Thor from under my eyebrows. And I bet you find her glowing in the dark ass especially erotic. Fuck! I yanked the bag open and stared inside, feeling my teeth grind. That fucking bitch just had to ruin my beautiful morning. I wish she was right here right now on this fucking cliff, so I could push her ass off. And I don't even need my powers for that, I can take that cow with my bare hands! I felt my grip on the bag turn my fingers white and tried to take a deep breath to calm my anger down. I took another breath, and exhaled, releasing my death grip on the leather, and sighed, looking at the edge of the cliff. Yeah... pushing her off would've been fun, but it would've never worked. Her hot air filled head would raise her ass up like a balloon. Ugh! I rose up, roughly pushing the sword under my belt, then picked up the bags and the axe.

“Speaking of work. It’s your turn to carry the bags, you had it easy all those days.”

“Easy? I was tied up and pulled.” Thor smiled, raising his eyebrow, but I was not in the mood for jokes and smiley faces any longer.

“Exactly, so I was doing all the work, carrying the baggage and pulling you. So now, Son of Odin, it's your turn.”

I threw an axe, followed by the bags into the God of Thunder’s direction, walking to the rocky wall and, without turning back, started my climb.

I tried to push all my attention to the pressing matter at hand, watching carefully where I grip the rocks. By the time I reached the second level, my anger subsided just enough for me not to fear that the steam from my boiling emotions would escape with a whistle out of my nostrils. By the fourth level I was able to think more rationally and sighed to myself. What's gotten into me? I never used to be so... so bitchy... so... venomous... what happened? He had girlfriends before... well, not girlfriends... He was with other women, and I'd never gotten so pissed off when he mentioned them. Why did his mentioning Sol get to me so badly?

I glanced at the sunrise and sighed. Because... because the truth is... she is beautiful... the most beautiful of them all, and, like it or not, the most fitted to be the next Queen... and the worst part of it is she knows it. Despite her stupidity, she knows she has the future King in her hands, and she would do anything to become the Queen. She would charm him in, cloud his mind... and he would fall for her... sooner or later he will... and then... then I will lose him forever. Sol wouldn't stand for him having me as his friend. She will pull him away, just like she did that evening...

I swallowed another sigh and looked at Thor, who was standing on the wide edge a few feet above me. His eyes moved over the sky and stopped on the rising sun and I felt another wave of anger. Fucking bitch already has all of his thoughts! He thinks about her right now! I hate her! I really, truly hate her! With a passion! I glared at the tip of the sun that was peeking from beyond the rocks, wanting to shove those rays somewhere deep up Sol's glowing ass, and my fingers dug into the stone, chipping off a piece of the gravel, and causing me to lose my grip. I took another deep breath and once again tried to calm my anger, concentrating on the climb.

The last level of rocks was conquered and we stepped out onto the big, flat plateau. The deep, gaping cuts of the endless cracks ran through the surface of the burning in the sun rocks, looking like hungry mouths, and I thought to myself that they ripping this top apart, just like Sol with her hunger for the crown will tear me and Thor apart. Another wave of anger whipped through my mind and I stepped back without paying attention to where I was stepping, and my foot almost slid into one of the bottomless pits. I regained my balance and snapped at myself.

Stop it! You have to calm down. You need to free your mind from all those distracting thoughts. You will not make it easier for Sol and fall to your death!

“Fuck no!” I answered to my own thoughts and Thor turned to me.

“What?”

“Nothing. I'm just swearing at the fucking slippery rocks.”

“Careful, we have to make it to the other side in one piece.” He smiled at me briefly, returning his eyes to the sun, and I swallowed another wave of anger. I hate you Sol, you have no idea just how much I hate you.

I followed Thor, jumping over the crack in the ground, and feeling hate burning inside of me, reaching its greedy fingers into my mind, despite my best attempts to calm my emotions. I tried and tried again, everything I could do without my powers to get my mind free, but all my attempts were worthless.

I never had such hard time controlling myself before... I never knew how hard it is to deal with strong emotions without powers. So is this how it feels to be really human? How do they do it? Day after day... how do they live like that, how do they survive? No wonder they have so many wars... but on the other hand... now I know why their love is so strong... They don't spend their limited time trying to figure out how to extinguish what they feel, they simply live it.

Continue of the chapter.

(Thor's POV)

I looked at Astrid and noticed that her forehead was still bearing an angry line between her eyebrows. Hm... could that be it? The sign I was silently pleading for...? The answer? She was clearly ticked off when I unintentionally brought Sol into the conversation... Her mood switched from happy to downright furious in a second... The way she yanked that bag, the way she shoved her sword behind her belt, not to mention that she called me... The only times she ever calls me 'Son of Odin' is when she’s pissed off at me... Could I dare to think that all that points too? There is no other explanation... She doesn't know that Sol tried to killed me... that means... that means... she’s pissed off at me and Sol because... because she is jealous!

I breathed in, stopping on my tracks and felt my lips sliding into a big smile. My little Valkyrie is jealous! I turned to Astrid, watching her jump over another deep crack and as she made it to my side and I looked into oh-so dear to me eyes, swallowing my speed up by the latest discovery, heart. You have no idea, that you have nothing to worry about! You don't have to be jealous of her or anyone in that matter! You never did! My heat was always yours!I always loved you and only you!

My lips opened up, ready to let out long held words out, by my little Valkyrie suddenly stopped, quickly moving her eyes to something behind me, and gripping the pommel of her sword.

“What?” I quickly turned, looking around, but saw nothing besides the blinding mosaic of black canyon cuts through the rocks, burning in the sun.

(Astrid's POV)

Suddenly a creepy feeling of danger griped its cold fingers into my spine and by instinct my hand flew to the pommel of my sword.

“What?” Thor quickly turned in the direction I was looking at, and I slowly moved my eyes over the horizon.

“I don't know... I can't see it... but something is there... I can feel it...”

“I don't see or feel anything...” Thor reached for the handle of his axe. “Maybe it's those goats again?”

I ignored his comment and looked over the plateau again, trying to adjust my vision as my eyes moved over the blinding yellow rocks, engraved by the black sharp lines. I blinked the tears away, stopping at every dark line, but couldn't see anything suspicious.

“Come on, your eyes are probably just tired. Fucking rays reflecting off the rocks so bright it makes even my eyes water.” Thor turned to me, with a smile, but his arm stayed on the handle of his axe.

I continued searching for even the slightest movements, but there were none, and I slowly moved my hand off the handle of my sword. “Maybe you’re right...”

“If there is anyone crazy enough to be here besides us, it would only be those goats we saw yesterday.” He turned, pulling his axe off his belt. “Oooh, maybe we can catch one for lunch! Here goaty-goaty-goaty, come 'ere you little shits!”

His words pushed a smile on my face as I watch him raise his axe, but the smile slid off my face when a thin black line lashed out with a swishing sound from the blackness of the cleft next to us. Before either of us could react, it wrapped around Thor's axe, yanking back, and ripping the weapon from the unprepared for attack God of Thunder’s hand. My hand flew to my sword, fingers were almost with in reach of the handle, when multiple whistlers emerged form the canyon cuts all around us. One by one, the leather ropes wrapped around my and Thor's shoulders, arms, and legs. I pulled to get my hands free, desperately trying to reach my sword as Thor’s thunderous voice rose up in the air.

“Come out and face me! Fight like a man, you coward!” He was pulling on the leather ropes that covered him, yanking them closer and multiple, wrapped head to toe in black owners of the long whips spilled out from the darkness of the canyons. Thor managed to use their whips, wrapping them around his mighty fists and charging full speed at the attackers with a loud growl.

“Aah, you fuckers! Lets see what you can do now!” He jerked the whips in his hands, meeting their owners with his fists and knocking them down. A whistling noise hit the air and another wave of lines, like a black web, covered Thor. No mater how hard he fought, no matter how many listless bodies dropped under his feet, the canyon was producing more and more black figures.

“Hold on, I'm coming!” I sped up my movements, desperately pulling on the leather so tight that it cut into my skin, but as soon as my hand was almost within reach of my sword, I saw dark brown eyes on the painted black mask below me. Hands wrapped in black fabric pulled my sword from under my belt down and away from my hand. I felt multiple hands weaving leather ropes over my shoulders and legs, and started frantically thrash in my ties, only succeeding in making them tighter. I looked at Thor, who looked like a bear under attack of a pack of dogs. He was standing at the edge of the canal, surrounded by a black crowd. With his every turn, multiple figures were flying off of him, but they were quickly replaced by others, pulling ropes and trying to secure the pissed off God of Thunder. All I heard was Thor's growls and the screams of the souls sent to the Hel's realm by Thor's deathly blows.

I pulled the ropes with all my strength, pushed by the need to help Thor, and one line popped free, loosing up one of my hands. I quickly pulled on the others, pulling both of my arms out of the ties. My fists didn't take any time and started to send blows left and right as my eyes fished my intended target out of the crowd of black bodies. The man was still holding my sword in his hand, and I pushed through the enemies surrounding me, gripping his neck and reaching for the pommel, but at the last second something flashed bright into my eyes, making me close them shut. I tried to open my eyelids, but the brightness only increased, blinding me. My hands were pushed off and I stopped, trying to find my bearings, but it seemed like the light was following me, managing to shine right into my eyes no matter which way I turned. It was everywhere.

At one moment I had gotten away from the blinding beam and through my tear filled eyes I saw my sword in the hand of the black figure behind Thor. The blinding light hit my eyes again, but I still pushed forward, rushing through the hands gripping me, screaming at the top of my lungs.

“Thor! Behind you!”

I managed to blink my eyes free for a second and saw the dark figure swinging my sword to my love's open neck and the light returned, covering the scene from me. The very next moment I heard a growl of pain and my heart jumped up, recognizing Thor's voice. My body stopped, freezing in horror, and I pushed my eyes open only to see a headless body covered in blood stained fur cape sliding down into the canal. A ripped chain clinked on the rocks, and I saw the blood stained broken piece of my spear sealed to a hammer dropping heavily on the ground by my feet. I felt as if someone removed the life force from my body and dropped to my knees.

The multiple hands immediately gripped into my body, using my powerless moment, but I felt the anger combined with the deep pain of loss pushing my body up with inhuman strength. Rage filled my body, teeth locked in growl as my hands pulled on the ties with increased power, ripping them off. My fists worked through the enemies surrounding me, and my lungs released a loud scream.

“I'll kill you all for him!”

I pushed my way to the familiar blade in the hands of the black figure, feeling that tightened by my body force ropes to cut into my torso. I didn't feel the pain, I didn't feel anything but hate for the ones who took the life of my love. I wanted to kill them all, every singe one of them.

As my hand reached to the sword, pulling a crowd of men who were trying to hold me back behind me. More whips flew my way, wrapping around my arms and pulling them back, but they only momentarily slowed me down. I pushed forward, but the light returned, lowering in front of me in the form of a bright cloud. A vaguely familiar figure stepped out of the orb, hands reached to my head, holding a brightly glowing circle and placing it on my head. As my eyes stopped on the golden eyes in front of me, I heard a wind like whisper.

“Forgive me...”

A numbing sting hit my head, running down my spine, and drawing the power out of me. The figure stepped back into the orb, vanishing as my suddenly numb body dropped. Multiple hands tightened the ropes around me, but there was nothing I could do, I simply couldn't move. My body felt listless and cold as if it wasn't mine. I couldn't move when they picked me up, I couldn't fight back when they lowered me into the dark canal on ropes. The lights dimmed, followed by complete darkness, and then burning torches floated right by my face, but I couldn't even blink. One lonely thought circled my fogged mind.

Thor is dead... they killed him... they killed him with my sword... he's dead... he's dead... He died because of me...

XXXIV.

(Thor's POV)

I felt someone crawling under my cape, trying to push me forward. I reached up, untying my cape and quickly turned, wrapping the ties around the neck in black wraps. I heard Astrid's warning, but by the time I managed to turn back, releasing the enemy’s neck from my hands all I could do was tilt my body back from the dangerous blade flying full speed at me. I stepped back, losing my footing and the sword tip cut through the chain of my pendant, drawing a red line on my chest. I growled as the sharp pain burned my skin, but couldn't do much more than follow gravity, falling into the black abyss of the canyon behind me. In the weird angle I saw the Valkyrie's sword continue on its way, cutting off the head of the man I was strangling with my cape, and the face twisted in pain with wide open eyes hanging in the air a few inches away from my shoulder. His headless body followed, spreading the sides of the cape like bloody wings above me.

The fall took what seemed like forever, with my mind frantically seizing in panic because I'd left Astrid all alone and unprotected. Fear for her life was pounding in my temples, trying to break through the walls of my limited in this realm ability, until it was all knocked out into blackness by the side of the cliff.

I opened my eyes, staring at the broken bright line of a blue sky somewhere far above me. I don't know how long I was laying unconscious for, but my body felt as numb and cold as the rocky walls that were surrounding me. My mind slowly rose up from the fog and the sharp thought that Astrid was in the hands of the back figures jerked me up to my feet. My eyes searched the walls for a way out as my hands slid over smooth, polished rocks.

“Astrid!” I called out and the loud echo bounced around, almost deafening me. All I could see above me were the almost seamless black walls of a tight tunnel with no way out. I tried to climb, but my fingers slid on the rocks. I tried and tried again and again with the same result. Breathing heavily, I stepped back, hitting my back on the opposite wall, and hit both of my fists on the cold rocks in frustration.

“Father! Mother! I don't care if you're mad at me, I don't care if you find out that I broke your orders to stay in Asgard. Please help her! Please save Astrid! Do whatever you want with me, you can leave me in this hole forever, just save her! Please save her!”

Only the wind whistled back, moving through the upper part of the funnel imprisoning me. I tried to climb again and again, over and over, falling back to the bottom. I called out for my parents, for my brothers, for Heimdall, for anyone who could possibly hear me, but no one answered.

My voice became horse from the screams, my ears rung, almost deafened by the bouncing echoes of my own voice, and my fingers bled from my restless and endless attempts to climb. My heart was beating heavily in my chest, ready to rip through my ribcage in a desperate urge to help the one I love. Finally, when my bruised and exhausted body dropped to the rocky floor for the thousandth time, I gave in. I gripped my head with an animal-like sound coming from my winded lungs, completely crushed by my inability to do anything.

I looked at the distant line of the blue sky, and that is when I noticed something sparkling somewhere in the wall about fifteen feet away from me. Whatever it was it looked different from the rocks and had a metal-like shine. I quickly jumped up to my feet, determined to get whatever it was in the hope that I could use it to climb up.

My mind jumped from the redness of frustration and to work, quickly pulling and dismissing possible ways to get to the shiny metal above me. I looked around in search of anything I can use and my eyes stopped on the headless body on the ground. If I can just throw something up... my eyes moved to the severed head and returned to the corpse's boots, stopping on leather ties that held them in place.

Wait! The whips they were using! It should be long enough to reach that far up! I quickly made my way to the corpse, turning it and moving the bloody cape aside. I held my breath in hope, and when my hands pulled the leather handle out of the black wraps, a victorious scream escaped my lips.

It took me a few dozen tries, but soon I mastered the perfect lash and the small, silvery metal tube landed by my feet, making me jump with excitement.

“How could I forget!? Gemon's flute!!!” I gripped into lifesaving find, pulling it to my lips and blew in it with the power of the Northern wind. No sound came from the flute, and I blew in it again, with the same result. I turned it in my hands and tried the other end, blowing my lungs out, but still making no sound. I squeezed the useless flute, growling and started blowing nonstop, turning it up and down, changing the ends, until I felt lightheaded. I stopped for the second, catching my breath and pushed the flute back to my lips, emptying all the air out of my lungs into it.

“You can stop now, I heard you the first time.” Gemon was standing behind me, looking at the headless corpse.

“What took you so long?! I've been blowing this trumpet for ages!”

“Not ages, just a few minutes. I had to make sure we are alone before I appeared.” He pushed the corpse with his hoof. “So... how did you ended up in this hole and who is your friend here?”

“Astrid is still there, on the top, all alone against an army! You have to pull me out and help her!”

“I didn't see anyone on top... in fact there is nothing there, besides a few blood drops on the rocks...” He glanced at me and quickly added. “None of which is the blood of the Valkyrie.”

“She's not there? We have to find her!”

“I can't sense where she is, she is hidden from me as a mortal.. What happened?”

“Gemon, I can tell you all that after we find Astrid, right now we have to do anything possible and impossible to find where she is! They must've taken her with them...”

“Well, to know where she is, you have to first know who they are...” Gemon lowered himself to the body on the ground. “I'm assuming he is one of them, right? Lets see... black wraps... goat skin leather... hm... wait, what's this?” His hand reached to the chest, pointing at a tattoo half covered with wraps. His hand hesitated for a second before carefully pulling the black fabric back further and revealing a circle with twelve angled lines around it.

“A Sun worshiper...”

I felt a wave of anger hitting my mind, like a lightning bolt, and breathed out.

“Sol!”

Gemon stood up and looked at walls, then turned to me. “That explains it... the Goddess of the Sun, or one of her rays, could've easily burned this tunnel. I thought that this was a trap as soon as I looked at the walls, they are too smooth for a natural formation... so... it was made to trap you... humans can't harm you... as for a mortal Valkyrie...”

I felt a tornado of fury, raging through my body, fists turning white, teeth clinched, and my growl echoed like thunder.

“If one hair on Astrid's head is missing! I will personally kill every single one of them! I'll exterminate them! I will rip Sol's head off her shoulders, after I tear off her arms and legs and throw the bloody pieces of her body to Fenrir! I will--”

“Shut up.” Gemon rose his hand in the air, stopping me, and looked at something high on the wall, then returned his eyes to me. “My God, if I may.. let me clear your mind from the burning, but currently useless rage, and knock it back to a working state. To do all that, what you so vividly described, first, you have to find the Sun worshipers. Now, think. They didn't spill the Valkyrie's blood, that means they were not given an order to kill her, and that means only one thing. Sol wants to do it personally, and that is good news.”

“Good news??!!” My scream shook the tunnel, bouncing off the walls, and Gemon's face softened.

“That gives us time. Unlike her rays, the Sun Goddess can only step off her chariot at noon. That gives us time to find Astrid, but first... ”

Gemon's figure suddenly disappeared and almost in the blink of the eye returned at the opposite side of the tunnel, holding the hand of a ghost-like figure of a woman with long and tangled gray hair, her huge bleached out eyes staring blankly at nothing with a somewhat insane gaze.

“What in Hel's...” As soon as I said that the woman's eyes moved to me and her lips parted.

“Hel's... Hel's... Hel's...” She repeated, and it seemed as if her voice was coming from different directions, the last word flying right by my ear as a barely there, eerie whisper. 'Hel's...'

Gemon covered the woman's mouth and smirked at me. “A little bit creepy, isn't she?”

“Where did she come from?”

“She was here, all this time. Who do you think played with your voice, repeating your words up and down this tunnel? Meet Echo, the more ancient than you can imagine Oreade.”

“Echo...?” I vaguely remembered some story my mother told me about the worlds that existed around her's. “Isn't she supposed to be dead...?” At my last words, the Oreade's eyes moved to me, pausing for a second and continued to the wall beside me, where they stopped, freezing with the same blank stare.

Gemon moved his hand off Echo's mouth and sighed. “She is, in a way... driven insane by unanswered love... It was so strong that it kept part of her, her voice and this ghostly form, more spirit than flesh, continuing on. Her old world ceased to exist and she ended up here, on the newly formed Midgard. Sometimes she just plays with people, remembering her past life full, of fun. Sometimes, if someone reminds her of her lover, she lures them into mountains, making them chase her.” Gemon sighed and moved his hand off the ghostly woman's mouth and almost immediately her lips came alive.

“Them chase 'er... chase 'er... chas--”

The satyr promptly silenced her voice with his hand and Echo returned to a frozen-like state.

“And why did you bring that... that creature here?”

“She may know where the sun worshipers live, she could've seen them leave with the Valkyrie.”

I looked at her blank, crazy eyed stare and smirked.

“And how are we supposed to get what we need from her? I don't suppose you speak crazy, do you?”

“Even if I did... her curse only allows her to repeat someone's words, she can't talk herself. But.. she was.. and still is somewhat an Oreade... a Nymph, and I can try to get into her mind, with a little help... spark a little sanity in her...” He took his hand off the ghostly woman's lips and gripped my hand, pushing my fingers onto the woman's arm. “Don't let go of her, I'll be right back.”

I opened my mouth to protest when the creature's cold flesh touched mine, but the satyr had already disappeared and blank eyes turned to me as lips started whispering. “Right back... back...”

“Son of Fenrir!”

The crazy eyes moved and lips caught the new words.

“Son of Fenrir... son of Fenrir... Fenrir... rir... ri--” I scrunched my face in disgust and pressed my hand to the woman's lips, her eyes went blank once more, returning to the wall.

A few seconds of silence and the light wind movement made me turn. Gemon appeared by me, holding something behind his back. He looked at Echo, then at me.

“As far as I know Nymph nature, it can either go terribly wrong... but then we don't lose anything and are back to the start... or... just right...”

He pulled a yellow flower in front of Echo's eyes and right away I saw a little spark in her blank stare. Her eyes came alive and her lips opened with a silent sigh.

Gemon lowered the flower into her ghostly hand and her eyes followed it. “You remember him, don't you? Remember crying over this flower, that his dead body turn into... you brought this flower with you, to this world... because you still love him... This man, this God, in front of you, loves someone, too. She was taken from him and will die, unless he finds her. See this body in black wraps? Those are the people we're looking for, they hold this man's love hostage and will kill her. We need your help.”

Echo's eyes stayed on the flower as her lips breathed out.

“Help... help...” She rose her eyes to me. “Help.”

I stepped forward, gripping her shoulders.

“You saw them, you know where they are, show us where they took the woman with long black hair and blue eyes.”

“Blue eyes... blue eyes...”

Gemon stepped to my side. “Help us, help him to save the woman he loves.”

“Woman he loves... woman he loves...” Echo's eyes returned to the flower, hand coming up to press yellow petals to her chest.

“Where did they take her?”

“They take her... they take her...”

“Where is she?”

Gray eyes turned to me and the Nymph's hand pointed up. “She... she...”

Gemon gripped both of our arms and in the blink of an eye we were standing back on top of the plateau. Gemon let go of Echo's arm and pushed my hand off.

“Where did they go?”

“They go... they go...” The ghostly figure turned, and started slowly flying over the rocks, then stopped by one of the canals. “They go...”
