Thank you girls!!! Love you my friends! I was working for the 5 days on the row, 12 hours shifts, and now I have two days off. I only have a little part right now, more to come later. Thank you all again! Okay, here is what I have so far, hope you rather have a little sooner, then bigger update later. V. (Rodimir's POV) Another battle raged on. How long had we been at it? No one could remember. Man against man, steel against steel, greed against preservation; they pushed and we stood our ground. They wanted to take what we had, and we fought to protect it. They lived their lives in battle, lived to destroy, take, and burn. We lived to build, grow, love, nourish, and create. They were born warriors, killing was their job, taking was their nature, they were born to that, they lived it. We were simple farmers, hunters at best. My body was ready to give in, exhaustion taking its toll, power draining out of my body with every drop of sweat, every move. My armor pushed on my shoulders like a mountain, constricting my moves. I couldn't feel my legs, arms barely holding my sword and shield. Rain hit my face, mixing with my sweat and clouding my vision. The ground was soaked with the mix of rain, sweat, and blood, and the mud stuck to my boots like heavy chains, pulling me down, making it hard to stand, but I had to stand. The image of my wife emerged in my mind, recharging my depleted energy. My heart pushed forward, beating somewhere in my throat, ready to jump out, and my lungs burned, pushing out a scream. I had to stand for my way of life, for my love. I had to protect my land, my village, my wife and my unborn child. I had to fight for their future. I can't fail. My wife's last words pounded in my heavy head. 'I can't lose you, my love. Promise me, you'll return alive.' I had to return, I promised. And I must win... there will be nothing to return to if I fail. I'm all that stands between them and barbarian's fury. If I fail, they'll die painful death. A viking's face with a heinous snarl jumped in front of my vision, his sword hit my shield, pushing me to the ground and making me lose my footing. I rolled to avoid another hit, mud covering my face, and my sword and shield sank into the sludge, pinning me down. Stand up! You must stand up, you promised her to come back alive! My mind screamed to my burned out body and it obeyed, pushing up. Numb arms pulled the sword out of the mud, pushing it up with one blind stroke and a scream of death followed. I got him.. he didn't get me. The Gods are on my side for the moment. I lifted my face to the sky, letting the rain wash my face and whispered 'thank you, Perun*,' and the God of thunder answered, rumbling the sky above me with a lightning. My eyes caught movement at my side a second too late, and, horrified, I saw an axe flying out of the hand of the viking. “Oh no...” As the gasp fell from my lips, the sky burst with the lights of an Aurora. They rained down, filling the air around me, and the world came to a standstill, stopping the edge of the axe just a hair from my chest. I swallowed and tried to breathe in, but my throat closed up, squeezed by the cold fingers of overbearing fear. The eerie, motionless axe hung in the air in front of me, behind it the frozen, deathlike face of the viking. Blood-chilling shivers danced over my body and gripped tighter at my spine. I stepped back from the axe, turning on my numb legs, and looking at the petrified battlefield around me. Warriors' fixed figures, faces like statues, twisted with muted screams, weapons suspended in mid-motion. A still, wraith-like world of forgotten in the air rain. author's notes: Perun* In the ancient Slavic mythology Perun was a God of thunder and war, same as Thor was for vikings. |

I must cheer for the Slavic mythology too! Yay! Wonderful part, visually so rich it reads like a movie scene. I could just feel his horror when that ax stopped mid air just close off his face. And it's just wonderful how the promise made to his wife makes him move on despite the odds, despite himself. Fragile human with divine strength of love inside of him. No wonder Astrid wants to help him! No wonder she craves that kind of love. And there she comes in the end, oblivious of the trap she's about to fall in. *bites fingers* Now, where the hell is Thorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr?! Enough of these humans and redhead Gods

Thank you so much girls! Well, as I am a Slav, that mythology is close to my heart too! Thank you for reading and taking you time to let me know what you think of my silly scribbles! Love you all! Sorry for a delay, it was my husband's birthday yesterday, I had no time to write... But I managed to finish the second part of this chapter. Okay, I'll shut up and get to the update...lol So here is the second part of the chapter 5. (continue of Rodimir's POV) How is this possible? What happened? Where am I? What is this place of dead silence and frozen figures? My mind slowly came up with the answer and chills crept over my skin, encasing my guts in a heavy ball of ice. The land of the dead. I'm dead... but I feel no pain... it never reached me... did it? My eyes returned to the motionless axe. My hands reached to my chest, sliding over my armor. There is no wound.. but I'm here... No... no... I can't be dead... I can't be! My chest heaved with revolt, making me grip my head in panic. I can't fail! I need to find my way back to my world! I can't leave her unprotected! I have to save her! The air suddenly moved, deadly silence erupting with the thundering sound of large flapping wings, and I rose my head to the unbearably bright aurora lights above me. From that radiance came bolts of lightning, and a mythical winged horse landed on its back legs, shaking the ground with a thump. Terror twisted my stomach, pining it to my spine, and I fell to my knees in front of the towering celestial beast. Its body was glowing gray-white, like a stormy cloud, lightning flashes dancing in its dark eyes as its nares flared up, blowing out chilling fog. The stormy steed reared, spreading its wings, and sending hail and raindrops from its mane and feathers onto the ground. The beast glared at me, folding its wings, and stomped its front legs to the ground, revealing to me its almighty rider. My body shook in dread, pushing my heart to beat rapidly somewhere in my throat at the astounding sight of the warrior Goddess. Her body was garbed in silver armor, which flickered with the northern lights. Her long, dark-as-the-night-sky hair was falling beneath her winged helmet, spreading over her shoulders and covering her back like a cape. Her gloved hand was wielding a large spear and a long sword was placed at her side. Her eyes glistened like a clear blue sky as they stopped on me and I gasped, dropping my forearms into the mud in a deep bow to this supreme being. “Rise, Rodimir son of Slavs.” I heard her strong, beautiful voice and saw her feet stepping down by my bolted to the ground arms. “I'm not worthy to stand in the presence of a Divine Deity.” I shook my head. “I'm ordering you to get up and face me.” Her commanding voice pushed me up, and I felt my heart diving down as my eyes dared to rise up to her's. She scanned my face and her voice softened. “I read a fear in you.” “Am I... dead?” My lungs seized, pushing out a whisper. “What makes you think that?” Her eyes warmed up, darkening. “This frozen world around me... even the rain is stuck in midair... it's not my world.” “I just stopped and extended one moment, but if it frightens you....” She walked to the axe meant for my death, hanging in the air, and the rain drops moved aside from the path of their ruler. As her hand touched the axe, making it drop, the world unfroze, coming back to the somewhat muffled noisy motion of battle. One viking ran between us, stopping for a second with a baffled face in the rainless space around the Goddess, before continuing on his way. He passed by me, almost hitting my side, and the Goddess smiled at the silent question in my eyes. “They can't see us. I've hidden you from the world with my veil, and only the mortals chosen for the right of the slain can see me.” “Right of the slain? I'm chosen to die in this battle...” The words dropped in the air, and the iron hand of fear yanked my heart down. I am chosen to die... I will never return to my loved one, I will fail to protect her... just as my father failed to protect my mother... The images of my childhood rose up in my mind. My burning village, dead bodies on the ground, screams of pain. The figure of my mother dominated the vision, pain in her eyes, blood on her ripped dress, her screaming my name. Her face changed to the face of my wife as the hand of the barbarian pushed her throat shut, his other hand gripping her hair and pulling her back to his smirking face. My heart flew up and frantically seized in my chest, fists tightening and turning white, while my lungs pushed a groan of pain through locked in hatred teeth. The soft voice of the warrior Goddess broke through the ghostly revelation of my horrid future. “It's a great honor, to be a chosen one. To go to the after life and join an army that will fight on the side of Gods as the world ends. We chose you... but I've decided to grant you a wish. What would be one thing you'd wish for?” A wish... one wish, a chance to save my beloved one, my Mila... My lips breathed out a plea. “That no harm would come to my wife, that she would live a long and happy life.” “You wouldn't ask for you life?” The Goddess' blue eyes peered into mine. “Her life is more valuable to me than my own.” “Your love is strong, Rodimir. I chose well.” A smile lit the Goddess' face, and her hand landed on her blue pendant as her mighty voice rose in the air around me. “So be it. I am Astrid, the battle maiden, the chooser of the slain and I grant your wish by the power of my pendant. The one you love will live a long and happy mortal life and no harm will come to her, for as long as your love shall live.” Her hand let go of the pendant and it burst with bright light, shining like a star. The wave of light reach my body, making it tingle, and my head spun as her words repeated in my mind, chanting over and over again. Then the lights let go of me and I drew air into my chest, feeling lightheaded. “Thank you my Goddess. I'm ready to go with you to the after life.” I lowered my head, accepting my fate, then rose my hand to my chest, placing it over my heart and looking into the eyes of the Deity. “I swear my legions to you Goddess Astrid and to God Perun, and I promise to fight on your side as fiercely as I fought for my loved one.” She smiled and stepped forward, putting her hand on my shoulder. “In time we will hold you to your oath, Rodimir, but it won't be today.” I breathed in and exhaled. “But you chose me to be slain...” “You wished for your loved one to be happy, but she'll never be happy without you. You wished that no harm would come to her, but your death will be as harmful as a viking's sword to her heart. The love of your wife saved your life today, warrior. Go to her, live, love, let your love protect you both.” She returned to her stormy stallion, jumping on its back and it pushed up with mighty wings, lifting above the ground, and leaving me to stand in gratitude and unexpected relief. My hands rose up to the quickly vanishing lights of aurora as I fell to my knees into the muddy ground in honor of a new, not known to me until this day Deity. “Thank you Goddess Astrid, the Goddess of battle, Goddess of rain, who rides the storm itself. I'll worship you for as long as I shall live as a merciful Goddess, protector of loved ones. I'm forever in your dept, Goddess of the wishing star.” |

God I've missed your writing!!! Thank you so much for embarking on a new fic and bringing me along. This was an outstanding reading experience, the last part so beautifully written, it reminded me of the shiniest moments of Astronomy and Wherever. I have to note the overall tone, the syntax and language you chose, what a wonderful, perfect choice for this chapter. It is archaic, otherworldly, divine, human, everything that needs to be there for me to feel every detail of this exchange to the very core. Just beautiful! Their movements are so well described, the constant high-low, divine-human, rise-fall, goddess-worshiper dynamics fitting their conversation wonderfully and to me indicating many more twists and turns, rises and falls to come all for love, all for the loved ones. Rodimir fell before Astrid awaiting death, then rose again to live his life, worship her and love his wife. What will happen to Astrid, will she fall victim to an evil scheme and face death too? Will there be someone to sacrifice for her, someone with a love for her so strong to make her rise again? Will Rodimir have the chance to worship her like a true Goddess, like he vowed to do? There, you got me going. But seriously, this was one beautiful, beautiful chapter. Magical. Just like love, divine or human.
