More...I think this part might be kinda sad but here goes... I woke up the next morning sweating. The summer heat was unbearable. “James, get off me” he had his arm wrapped around my middle. His naked chest was stuck to my back. I rolled him on his back as gently as I could. “Oh my god; it’s so hot” he moaned and threw the covers off himself, still naked from the night before. “Turn the AC on before I melt” I flicked the switch on the machine but nothing happened. “Shit, I think it’s broken. I’m going to have a shower. I stink” “I know…” “Shut up and go back to sleep” I went for a shower and was incredibly happy from the night before, even if a little sore. I had my first boyfriend lying in my bed and naked too. That thought made me smile as the cool water washed over me. I got dressed and went downstairs to be greeted by an excited dog. I looked at the calendar on the wall in the kitchen and saw todays date was marked "Mom, 60". My mom’s sixtieth birthday. I made coffee and went to sit out the back garden with Kane in the sun. I thought about how proud my mom would be of me after finishing college and it made me sad that she wasn’t here to see it along with all the other stuff she missed out on too. Normally her birthday and anniversary didn’t bother me but this time was different. I kept thinking, maybe overthinking, about how I had no idea what I wanted to do with my future or what kind of job I wanted. I was apparently in a relationship now too. A relationship? I didn’t even know what a relationship was. That lowered my mood even further. I had no idea how long I was sitting there thinking but it was long enough for James to shower and dress. The back door opened and he came over to me. “Where’s my breakfast?” he grinned at me sitting beside me on the bench. “Why don’t you make some?” I said without any emotion. “Are you ok, Zara?” he asked concerned, taking my hand. “I’m scared, James…” “Of what?” “This relationship thing…I’ve never done it before; I don’t know how it works. Is there rules you have to follow?” I sighed. “I don’t know, everything’s just happening kind of fast you know? I finished college, got a boyfriend, and had sex for the first time all in one day yesterday…and I’m afraid that if I get too attached to you and you leave I’ll be back to square one again…it seems like everyone leaves at some point…” “Are you saying you don’t wanna be my girlfriend anymore?” “No! Of course I want to be your girlfriend. I’m just afraid I’m going to let you down or something…” “You won’t let me down…and yeah maybe we did move a little quick last night. I don’t want you to feel pressured into anything either. We’ll take things a little slower now, ok?” “Thanks” I tried to smile. “Sorry for being such a downer” “I know…now what else is bothering you?” “Nothing” “Don’t lie to me” I decided to tell him. He’d get it out of me anyway. “It’s my mom’s birthday today that’s all” I felt his arm wrap around my shoulder and his lips on my cheek. “Is there anything you usually do on her birthday and maybe we could…do it together?” “No not really, it’s never really bothered me before” “Well maybe we should do something then. It might help you feel better. We could go to her grave and leave some flowers? I mean it’s nice and sunny and it’ll give us something to do today” “Would you be ok with that?” “Yeah of course. You just need to tell me where to go because I don’t know where it is” “I love you” I smiled thankfully at him. His shiny blue eyes could always cheer me up. James drove us to the graveyard which took about an hour. Everything looked gray even under the sun and we were the only ones in the graveyard. “This place is horrible” I said shutting the door of the black truck. “So whereabouts is it?” I looked around at the rows of crosses and tombstones and realized I had forgotten where both graves were. “I have no idea…this is so morbid…there’s like, dead people here…” “C’mon, you’ll feel better after it” He took my hand and we weaved in and out of the rows of graves, looking at the writings on the gravestones to try and find my mom’s. While we were walking around, the sky turned from blue to overcast. It could have been a scene from a movie. James suddenly tugged on my hand and took his sunglasses off. “Is this it? Sandra Marie Dean?” I looked at the dark granite stone and realized that was it. “Yeah, that’s it” “Wow, she was young when she died” he said as he read the carving on the stone. “This is weird…I’ve never been here since her funeral and even then I stayed in the car with my aunt because I didn’t know what was happening” “What happened to her?” “We were getting ready to go away to Boston to visit my uncle and she was in the bedroom packing her suitcase and she collapsed on the bed saying she had a headache…nobody was telling me anything. My aunt came over to look after me, I had no idea where my dad was…then a few days later my dad came home and took me to the hospital and brought me into this long room full of people lying in beds then I saw my brother sitting by someone…my dad sat on a chair beside him and pulled me onto his lap and I just stared at my mom…she looked awful; tubes coming out of everywhere and I asked him when she was coming home and he wouldn’t answer me and my brother couldn’t even look at me…then a nurse walked past and I asked her when she was going to get better and come home and she just said…’she’s isn’t’ and that was it…every so often I’d ask my brother what happened to her and all he’d ever say was ‘I’ll tell you when you’re older’. I’d never ask my dad in case he got upset. Then on my thirteenth birthday I asked him again and he finally told me that she had a brain hemorrhage…she didn’t smoke or drink or anything so I don’t know why it happened…” I felt James wrap his fingers around mine and his thumb ran tiny circles on my hand. “But she told me you can be anything in heaven so I know that she’s a singer up there now” we both laughed. “What would she be singing?” “Probably some ABBA stuff or Tom Jones or something terrible like that! Happy birthday, mom” I laid the flowers we bought on the way on the dirt and I turned to leave when I heard James whisper something out of earshot. “What did you say?” “Nothing…I just told her that I’d look after you and stuff” “And stuff? What stuff?” “I’ll tell you when you’re older!” he laughed. |

That's terrible what happened to her mom. I hope James takes very good care of Zara, but that last part "I'll tell you when you're older" made me giggle

Thanks for the comments and for reading! Sorry for the delay too “I’m gonna get fat” James said as he shoved another fork full of the Chinese food we had bought on the way home into his mouth. “You already are--” “Finish that sentence and you’ll be sorry” “You know I’m kidding. You have a perfect figure” I laughed. “I knew it…” “Knew what?” “You’re only with me for my body” “Thank you for coming with me today. I wouldn’t have gone without you…I probably wouldn’t have done anything at all actually” “No problem. Your mom would probably kick my ass if she was here though” “Why do you say that?” “Well, have you seen the state of your neck after last night?” he laughed. “You’re right actually. It's my dad you'd have to worry about more though” there was a trail of purple hickeys down the side of my neck and collarbone. “So what are you gonna do now? Are you gonna get a job or something?” I took a deep breath before I answered him. He was making me think of my future again, something I really didn’t want to do because I was scared of it. I don’t have a clue what I want to do. “Yeah I’m gonna have to. But I think the only job you can get with a degree in environmental science is to teach environmental science or work in a lab and there’s no way I’m doing that. I don’t know what I’m going to do really” “I have an idea” he started to unzip his jeans and I raised an eyebrow. “No. Not that. You and your dirty mind” he said playfully. “What’s your idea then?” “Why don’t you get a small job, maybe even part time in a grocery store or something just to keep some money coming in then you can come out to California for July and August with me then we’ll see what happens” “That could work…thanks” I thought. It sounded ok, but what happens after August? I decided not to dwell on it. I cleaned up the mess we made in front of the tv and James went out into the garden to play with Kane before the game started. I heard my cell phone ringing from the bedroom and ran to it. “Hello?” I answered out of breath. “Hey is that Zara?” a voice asked me on the other end of the line. “Yup. Who’s this?” “It’s Joe. How are you?” What? I hadn’t seen or even heard my brother’s voice in nearly five years, maybe more. I noticed the Southern twang in his voice from living in Texas. “I’m f-fine, you?” I was stumbling with my words in surprise. “Great. I have some news” “Oh. What’s that?” just then James walked into the bedroom and wrapped his arms around my waist and started to kiss my neck. “Well I’ll be in New York tomorrow so I thought I’d come and visit you and we could have dinner…is that ok?” “Hmm…uh yeah sure” “Cool. It’s good to talk to you again” “Yeah…it’s really good” “Are you ok, Zara?” “Can you hold on a sec, Joe?” I shoved James off me onto the bed. “Control yourself! It’s my brother!” I told him while I covered the speaker with my hand and he held his arms up. “Yeah sure that’s fine…is Renée coming too?...oh, ok…I’ll see you tomorrow” I hung up and threw the phone on the bed. Great. His wife was coming too. “My brother’s coming here tomorrow” “You don’t sound too pleased about that. I thought you got along?” “We do…well we did but I haven’t seen him in forever and now he’s just turning up for no apparent reason…with his demon wife” “She can’t be that bad…” “You’ll find out for yourself tomorrow. She’ll take any chance she gets to criticise something…and I have to cook for her” he laughed at my last statement. “What’s funny, dude?” “Well…don’t take this the wrong way but you’re not the greatest chef I’ve ever known” he was right. I couldn’t cook for shit. I ran a hand over my face in thought. “Can’t we just order in and say I cooked it?” “No. Look, get the computer and look up easy recipes. The simple dishes are often the best…yeah you do that and I’ll go and watch the game with my dog” he smiled, happy with his idea and that I’d be quiet and occupied while he was watching tv. I was sat on the couch with the computer on my lap and a pen and some paper beside me to write down recipes and ingredients. I scrolled through page after page of supposedly simple meals but it was all alien to me. What does “tsp.” stand for? It was times like these that made me wish I took home ec in high school instead of art. It was hopeless. “James?” I called him who was sitting on the edge of the seat with a bowl of popcorn rooting for his beloved raiders. “Yeah?” “You love me, right?” “What do you want?” he answered me with his eyes still glued to the tv. “Can you um….cook tomorrow? Please?” “Yeah sure whatever” I wasn’t sure whether he would actually cook or if he was just saying that to get me to stop interrupting the football. “I love you” I thanked him. “Mhmm” he said as he shovelled a handful of junk into his mouth. --------- Some drama coming up next

Some more because i'm in a good mood because i just got confirmation on my work experience woohoo anyway, here you go I woke up the next morning without James beside me. I looked at the time and it was 10am. I quickly got up and showered and dressed. I ran downstairs and saw that the surfaces in the kitchen were gleaming and there wasn’t a speck of dust on the tv or on the shelves. He’d obviously been cleaning while I was in bed. I felt a little bad for sleeping in. “James?” I shouted for him but no one answered except Kane barking out in the garden. I let him in and walked over to the countertop in the kitchen to find a note. Gone to store to get stuff for dinner. Didn’t want to wake you. J. Just as I finished reading the note I heard his key turn in the door. “Morning!” he shut the door with his foot due the bags he was carrying. “Oh my god you’re amazing!” “I know right?” he put the bags that were brimming with food in the kitchen and came to kiss me. “So what are you cooking?” “You mean what are we cooking?” “We?” “Yeah. We’re gonna do it together. I’ll give you instructions. We’ll cook the same thing I cooked for you” I smiled at his idea and kissed him passionately. “Mmm, you can thank me tonight ok?” I nodded. “So what time are they coming?” “He said around six” “We’ve got loads of time then. What are you gonna wear?” Shit. I hadn’t thought of that. “Well it’s not like we’re going out to eat or anything, right? So do I actually have to get dressed up? Plus it’s my house so…” “Good point” “What are you gonna wear?” I retorted. “I just need to shave, I look great in whatever I wear” he smirked. “Don’t be so cocky” “You love it” “A table!” I remembered I hadn’t got a dining table and there was no way Renée would eat at coffee table. “What?!” “We haven’t got a table to eat at!” “Calm down I’ve got it covered. Gimme a sec” he left me and went out to the truck. He returned with a flat cardboard box and went out into the back garden. “You bought a table?” “Yeah. I think of everything” he really did. “And it was cheap” “I take it we’re eating outside?” “The weather’s nice so why not?” I sat on the bench and watched him assemble the wooden outdoor table. I loved the way i was able to see the muscles in his sculpted back flex and contact when he'd bend over. “Want a hand?” “Nope. I got it” he said looking threw a bag of nuts and bolts then picking up a screwdriver. About half an hour later he had it assembled. “Looks great!” I told him while he surveyed his handy work and wiped the sweat off his forehead. “It’ll do. Let’s get cooking” We went inside and he took out numerous pots and pans and took the ingredients out of the bags. I washed my hands as he began telling me what to do. “Ok so all you really need to do is chop the vegetables, fry them and boil the potatoes. I’ll look after the sauce and I won’t cook the meat until they get here. Sound good?” “Sounds awesome!” “Alright so start with the carrots” I chopped carrots, potatoes, mushrooms, onions and peppers while James made a huge pot of sauce which I was made taste constantly. I fried the veg that would be heated in the oven before it was served. 5.30pm rolled around in no time and I started to get anxious. “Are you sure we have everything?” I said as we both stood in the bedroom getting changed. “I’m positive. White or black shirt?” he asked me as he stared at them both. “Black” I settled with a white V-neck tee, black skinny jeans and white Converse. It wasn’t much but it looked clean. I put on some make up that Anna had left in my house and let my hair fall around my shoulders making sure to cover my neck. “Wow you look great!” “No, I look clean” I laughed. “You look handsome” I complimented him as he rolled up the sleeves to his elbow. “I know” he smiled as wrapped my arms around his waist. “Mmm…and you smell good too” “Really?” he teased as he bent his head to kiss me. Our kiss began to deepen but was stopped when the doorbell rang. “They’re early!” “Calm down alright? Everything will be fine” I walked down the stairs to answer the front door. When I opened it I got a shock. Joe had exchanged his scruffy spiky hair for a side parting that was smoothed out with gel and was clean shaven. He wore a pink shirt, suit trousers and plain black dress shoes. Gone were the ripped black jeans and Doc Marten boots. “Hey Joe!” he hugged me as I snapped out of my gaze and I invited them in. “I’m great! You remember Renée?” I nodded in response and she forced a smile at me. “Would you like a drink?” “White wine please” Renée answered. “Oh…I haven’t got any alcohol, neither of us drink” “Us?” Joe asked me confused. James came downstairs as if on cue. “This is James, my--” “Her boyfriend” he answered for me. “James, this is Joe and that’s Renée” he reached out and shook Joe’s hand who looked at me in shock. “Nice to meet you both! How do you like your steaks?” “We’re having steak?” Renée asked. “Is that ok for you?” James asked her. “If that’s what you people eat then yes. I’ll have mine rare” “And Joe?” “Well done” “Awesome. I’ll get on it now.” He said as he marched happily to the kitchen. I led my brother out into the garden and made small talk while Renée watched James through the window. “You never said you were going out with someone” “It slipped my mind I guess” “You know that’s the guy from Metallica, right? You should be careful with him” Careful with him/ “Yes, I know that, Joe” “How did you meet him?” “Funny story actually…he-” “Zara, could you come here for a minute please?” James called me from the kitchen, pretty much saving me so I wouldn’t have to explain how we met. I went in and let out a sigh full of nerves. “I really don’t like that woman, she is wearing way too much make up. She looks like the fucking joker from Batman…” he was right. The makeup was literally caked on her face and her thin blond hair was backcombed into a bun. “And she keeps staring at me” “How’s the food coming along? Smells good” “Good. Should be about 20 minutes” “Sweet. I’m gonna go back out there” “Good luck!” he whispered. I went back out to Joe and his wife and mentally prepared myself for more questions and small talk. “How’s your dad Renée?” “Daddy’s fine. The company’s profits went up sixty per cent last quarter” “Wow…impressive” I hadn’t a clue what she was talking about nor did I care. The boring, financial talk continued until James told us to sit down and he’d bring dinner out. “Oh…we’re eating outside?” “The weather’s nice so why not?” she looked around with a foul expression on her face as if someone had dropped her off at a dump. Joe took a seat beside Renée on one side of the table and I sat opposite waiting for James to serve the food. “Alright grub’s up! You wanted yours rare, Renée?” he was being as polite as he could be despite his dislike of the woman. “Yes thank you” she smiled at him as he placed her plate in front of her. “And well done for you, Joe. I’ll get ours now, Zara” he kissed me on the cheek before he left to go back to the kitchen and Renée gave me a murderous look. He came back with our plates and settled down to eat. “Did you cook this by yourself James?” she asked him. “Zara and I did, yeah. Is it ok?” “It’s fine” “So what do you do James?” she didn’t know who he was. “I just play guitar and sing in a band, nothing fancy” “Do you make much money?” “Is that relevant or important?” he raised an eyebrow at her not liking her line of questioning. “But in answer to your question; we do ok” After that there was some definite tension at the table. “What kind of music do you play then, James?” she inquired further. “Bit of everything really but our main sound would be heavy metal” “Oh that’s awfully loud. I remember when I started going out with Joseph, he listened to all that garbage” she laughed condescendingly “but we mainly listen to opera now don’t we, honey?” she looked at my brother who nodded looking at his food and noticed he had hardly joined in the conversation at all and was letting his wife do his talking for him. I glanced at James and I could see he was clenching his jaw. “I didn’t know they called you joseph now?” I told him. “Yeah. Renée says it’s better for the business” “What business are you in?” it was James' turn to ask Renée a question. “My father owns the second largest dairy company in the States” “Oh so it’s your dad’s milk business” he corrected her and she diverted eye contact with him. “That’s why we’re here actually. Renée’s dad knows that you’ve studied some biology stuff in college and would like you to do some research into soil in Texas. You can move down there beside us as soon as possible and will have a permanent job with a great salary in the research facility. Straight offer” I was stunned. I quickly weighed up the pros and cons in my head. He wanted me to start a career dealing with something I hate? And move to Texas…beside them and away from James…getting a boyfriend and losing a boyfriend in the space of two days, that had to be a record. But I’d have job security; something I didn’t have right now. I turned to look at James who was nearly as shocked as I was. "So what do you say, Zara?" |
