Starting new threads?

What's the general consensus on starting new threads vs. posting in old ones? I know some forums prefer that you search to see if a thread has already been started and post there, regardless of how long it's been since the thread was active, and some prefer you to start new threads if you do happen to find a thread but it hasn't been active for a certain amount of time. What's the preferred way here?

Thanks in advance! :)

I would look around first, to see if the thread exists. Reviving old threads is preferred, as opposed to starting another thread on the same topic.

Still, we moderators can merge topics, so, it won't be the end of the world if you start a duplicate thread. :)
