I don't think I've commented in a while, but I'm still reading. It's great that James has finally gone back to HQ to continue working and the baby thing is awesome, too! :) I hope everything goes well with the baby and touring and all. And I hope you update soon!

Thanks for sticking around, ladies!

“Do you want me to stay here with him? It might be easier in case he starts crying or something” I asked James because there was a listening ‘party’ thing for the new album today at HQ.

“No, he can come. I don’t want to stay for longer than I have to anyway so if he starts getting cranky we can use him as an excuse to get out of there. Isn’t that right, bud?” he looking down at Ollie who was strapped into the car seat ready to go.

“You’re so mean!”

“You were thinking the same thing” he smirked. His morale had lifted in the past couple of days since he was sleeping more now and had gotten himself into a decent routine. “You got everything?”

“Yep” I told him putting Ollie’s bag over my shoulder.

---------

HQ was buzzing with people eager to hear the new album. Press filled the rehearsal room with notepads and pens listening to the album while the guys and I were in the kitchen. Everyone was being pretty quiet and I presumed it was because Ollie was sleeping but I saw James’ eyes widen in horror when he flicked through the pages of the tour schedule everyone was reading.

I nudged his arm. “You alright?”

He attempted to say he was but opted for a nod of the head instead and folded the paper he was reading and put into his back pocket.

“I’m um…going to take him up to my office for a while okay? It’s quieter” he said tripping over his words.

“Want me to come with you?”

“No” he stated quickly and carried Ollie upstairs. When James left I saw Kirk coming to sit beside me on the couch and I knew he’d want an explanation for James’ quick exit but I wouldn’t be able to give him one because I didn’t know what was on the paper.

“Did Ollie’s diaper need changing?” he chuckled.

“Yeah…probably” I played along.

“You know, I never pictured James with a baby but he seems pretty good with him”

“He’s awesome with him. He feeds him, changes him, sings to him. I thought a baby might scare him but he’s totally embraced it so I’ve nothing to worry about”

“When he’s here, Ollie is all he talks about…are you coming to the pre-tour party tonight?”

“I didn’t know there was one. James never said anything”

“Oh, well, we only organized it today so he probably doesn’t know about it yet. You should try and find a sitter for Ollie and come along”

“I’ll go tell James and let you know”

I followed James upstairs after slipping away from Kirk. I wasn’t against the whole idea of a party because we hadn’t had much time to ourselves since Ollie was born and that was two months ago. I peeked through the door of his office and he had Ollie lying on his legs with Ollie wrapping his hands around James’ fingers.

“What’s up?” I smiled as best I could.

“Nothin’”

“Why did you run up here?”

“Because it’s quieter. I told you that”

“Right. So what was that thing you were reading earlier? You put it in your back pocket?”

“Just the tour schedule”

“But you already knew about it so why did it shock you so much?”

“It didn’t. I…” he took a huge breath. “I don’t want you to be mad because it’s not my fault, alright? I had nothing to do with it. I fucking hate it”

“What are you talking about?”

“Maxine” he said quietly.

“What?”

“She’s tour manager again. That thing I was reading was more than the schedule; it has all the staff and crew on it too”

“You’re kidding” I crashed beside him on the chair hoping it would absorb some of the shock. I thought back to a few years ago when Maxine was on the scene and how she came between James and I even if it was her directly. It did make me mad but I learned to let it go.

“I fucking wish” he grunted.

“Well that sucks”

“I’m sorry” he whispered as Ollie started to get cranky.

“It’s hardly your fault. It’s not like you invited her or anything”

“I knew things were going too well”

“Think she still likes you?”

“I have no idea. I hope not”

“She might like you more because you’re a hot dad now” I laughed.

“This isn’t funny, Ruth”

“I know. I’m just trying to make you smile. I don’t really like the idea of my fiancé being hit on by his tour manager either. But I do trust you. I know you’re not going to jump into bed with her as soon as you’re on the road”

“I appreciate that I guess”

“Kirk said there’s a party thing at a bar for the tour and that we should go. My dad could babysit”

“I don’t really have a choice, do I?” he huffed.

---------

James dropped Ollie off at my dad’s for the evening. I stood at the bar beside James in an area of the bar that was reserved for the party. He held a glass of water in one hand and my hand in the other. He literally hadn’t let me go since we arrived. The place was packed with staff and crew but his eyes were fixed intently on the door, waiting for her to come through it. The conversations he had with people were minimal. He had to be prompted to speak. All of his smiles were forced.

“How was my dad when you left Ollie with him?”

“Fine” he said swirling the half melted cubes of ice around the bottom of the glass.

“What was he up to?”

“Dunno”

I shook his hand away and left to get some air outside. I sat on a bench that was outside the bar and took in the refreshing evening breeze. I didn’t like being around James when he was so anxious and wouldn’t hold a conversation. It was almost like public isolation. The fact he was anxious over Maxine pissed me off. It was almost as if he didn’t trust himself around her.

I sat on my own for around fifteen minutes. I heard a car door shut and saw a suited, red headed woman heading towards me and I knew exactly who she was. Her heels clicked louder on the ground as she got closer to the door. She didn’t seem to recognize me this time with my hair being different. As she reached for the handle to open the door, James was coming out. She stepped back and looked him up and down while he froze.

“Well, well…” she smirked. “It’s been a while, James. I’ve heard good things about you. All clean and sober now”

He began to fidget with his hands as she spoke to him. I was kind of glad to be anonymous to her to see how far she would take things with him.

“And what about a woman? Is there a lucky girl looking after you?” she laughed condescendingly.

He walked closer to me and held out his hand for me to take. It was a small gesture but enough for her to realize she had been hitting on him in front of his girlfriend.

“Aren’t you going to introduce us, James?”

“Uhm…yeah. This is my fiancée and mother of my child; Ruth. Also known as the best thing to ever happen to me” he told her genuinely.

“As in Ruth? Kirk’s guitar fixer person?”

“That’s me” I faked a smile as she scorned me.

“Well it’s nice to see you’ve started dressing like a normal person these days, Ruth. I’ll be inside if you need me, James” she swung open the door so it crashed off the wall as she made her way inside.

James sat beside me on the bench and rested his head on my shoulder.

“She’s so gross” I told him.

“Gross would be putting it mildly”

“Yeah, screw her”

“No thanks” he laughed for the first time all day.

Hey sorry i haven't updated in forever, work has been crazy. I hardly have a minute to myself. I'll try update sooner though. Awesome to know people are still interested :)

“What are you laughing at, bud? You want daddy to go away so you can have mommy all to yourself, huh? Yeah, I know your game” Ollie laid on the bed resting his head on a pillow listening to James talk, not understanding what he was saying but liking the sound of his voice. Ollie continued to kick his legs and giggle while James packed his suitcase for the upcoming tour. He was leaving tomorrow and it hadn’t sunk in that I’d be on my own with Ollie for four weeks yet.

“So I was thinking…maybe when I get back from tour we could get married?” he suggested while I folded his black shirts.

“Wow…really?”

“Yeah. I mean, why wait you know?”

“I think you mean we can start planning the wedding when you get back?” I said trying to make it sound a little bit more feasible.

“Maybe but I was also thinking you could do it while I was gone?”

“Hold on, James. A whole wedding? By myself?!”

“Your dad could help out obviously and you could get a wedding planner too”

“No, James. You have to be here for this stuff as well. It’s stressful planning a wedding and I’ll have Ollie to take care of while you’re away too. I have no problem waiting a little longer. Just until touring dies down a bit”

“I know you’re right but I want to make you my wife”

“And I’ll be your wife you just have to wait a bit longer. I hope you don’t mind but I do plan on staying” I folded the last shirt and sat on the bed.

“Do you want a big or a small wedding?”

“I don’t know; I haven’t really thought about it too much. Like I said before I never really saw myself getting married so I didn’t have all those daydreams of ‘my perfect wedding’ like most girls did”

“Wanna hear my ‘dream wedding’?” he asked closing his suitcase and picking Ollie up onto his lap.

“Sure” I smiled because I had no idea he had been thinking about this so much. Let alone have a dream wedding scenario planned out in his head.

“Okay so I don’t want anything too over the top. Just your dad bringing you to me wherever it is we end up getting married and have this little guy in a tux there to watch us get married. Then we go to somewhere nice and hot on honeymoon and just relax for a week or so”

“Sounds pretty perfect to me. But what about all your friends? Lars, Rob and Kirk, you don’t want them there? And the party after the ceremony?”

“It’ll be our day, baby” he pointed to the three of us. “All you need for a wedding are two people in love, a minister and a witness. And we’ll have pictures and rings on our fingers to show them afterwards as proof we got married but if you want a party we can have one”

“Nah, it’s fine. I like your idea better because it’s simple. It’s just I thought you might like the guys there that’s all. I thought Lars would be your best man for sure”

“He would be but I think we should do things our own way. We can have a party anytime and they can come but I believe a wedding should be about the two people getting married. I’m gonna put him down to nap then finish packing okay?”

I spent the rest of the evening thinking about planning a wedding. I realized after years of dressing like a punk I had no knowledge of super girly things like flowers or wedding dress materials or colors. The more I thought about it the more I realized I’d have to call my mom and ask her for help. I knew she would disappointed with the lack of celebration but I hoped she’d understand that we were celebrating it ourselves but getting her to see things from James’ point of view would take some persuading.

I googled “wedding dresses” and took some notes of wedding shops nearby. I learned a few things from my time online; there was a huge amount of variety and not all of it was cheap. I understood your wedding day is meant to be the greatest day of your life but it seemed like money wasted to me if I’m not going wear the dress again. I would get married in jeans if I had the choice.

“Have I planted a seed?” James said, looking over my shoulder at the computer screen.

“Maybe. What are you going to wear?”

“A suit, obviously. What else?!”

“Yes but what color will it be? Are you going to wear a tie or a bow tie? Are you going to shave?” he shook his head while I was talking as I was trying to make him see that it mightn’t be so easy just to jump into getting married when he came back.

“Alright, alright. I get it; a small wedding is just as hard to plan”

“Is it alright if I invite my mom up while you’re gone? We could get some ideas for my dress and the wedding. She’ll want to see Ollie too of course”

“Sure. Not like we’re short of room or anything”

“Thanks. What time is your flight at?”

“5am. I’ll be leaving here around 3am though”

“Seems like only yesterday I was visiting you in rehab. It’s amazing how far you’ve come”

“Heh. You think Ollie will grow much while I’m gone?”

“He’ll definitely grow but you probably won’t notice it much. Are you going to sleep tonight or stay up?”

“I’ll stay up. I can sleep on the plane because it’s a long flight”

I went to bed around 11pm and James stayed in Ollie’s room for most of the night. He hadn’t mentioned it but I had a feeling he was still a little nervous about touring. Especially with Maxine back in the crew. He had my trust so I wasn’t that worried.

“I have to go. I’ll call you when I get there. Love you” he told me before he left and kissed my cheek.

Four weeks without James around, a wedding to plan and a baby to take care of. Totally doable.

I can relate to having to get help when it comes to looking like a 'normal' girl!

Hope work stops being so crazy. I want more!

Thanks ladies

A few days after James left I organized for my mom to come up and stay for a week. When I mentioned the word “wedding” on the phone, it was obviously a trigger for her to go out and buy every bridal magazine available in stores. There were more magazines in her suitcase than clothes. We sat in the kitchen while Ollie slept and talked it over.

“Okay before we look through any of these, we already agreed to have a small wedding. Literally just James and I, Ollie and you and dad”

“And Tom” she corrected me.

“Yeah sure but no big party afterwards or big ceremony either”

“But it’s your wedding day, honey. It’s supposed to be a big day so everyone can celebrate together”

“You just said it; our wedding day, so we’re going to do it how we want to. You and dad will be there but that’s really going to be it. James isn’t even bringing any of his band mates”

“Alright. Well let’s start making a list for your ‘tiny’ wedding” she sighed and started writing stuff down on a piece of paper clearly disappointed with her dreams of planning a grand wedding were quickly being shattered. “Rings. What color?”

“Silver I guess. It has to be the same color as my engagement ring, right?”

“You better text James and ask him to make sure. Ask what size ring he needs too”

I took out my phone and sent James a text.

Mom’s here. Planning our “tiny” wedding. What color ring do you want? And what size will it need to be?

“So if you’re not having a party after the wedding, are you guys going to have a bachelor and bachelorette party before the wedding?”

I sent James another text.

“Where are you guys going to get married? What type of flowers are you going to have in your bouquet?”

Another text.

It was twelve texts to James without a reply later that I concluded we really hadn’t thought this through. Neither of us realized how much we’d bitten off to chew. I guessed my mom had been secretly planning my wedding in her head for a while now and she was finally getting to organize it. She had thought about more stuff than I had including what way I’d have my hair and make-up. Then, we finally got to my dress.

“What material do you think you’d like? Sleeves or no sleeves? How do you want it to feel?”

“Um…like a wedding dress?” I said given that my knowledge of fabrics and styles was close to zero.

“Hmm…maybe the best thing would be to go to some bridal boutiques and you could get an idea of what you wanted there?” she began to pack up her magazines and the list she was making.

“Yeah that might work. Is tomorrow okay?”

“Why wait? We can go today! Have you researched some shops?”

“Uh…yeah I have. But what about Ollie?”

“Leave him at your dad’s. He won’t mind taking him for a couple of hours. It’ll be fun, honey! We haven’t had a mother-daughter day in forever!” she said excitedly and grabbing her purse.

I gave into my mom and dropped Ollie off at my dad’s for the rest of the afternoon. We drove to the first of the boutiques and my mom was in heaven whereas I had no clue what I was getting myself in for. She wandered around the maze of rails packed with different wedding dresses with a huge smile on her face while I pretty much just stood in the door way looking at the first one I saw.

“Ruth! Honey, you need to try this one on” my mom practically squealed carrying a dress covered in plastic.

“Alright”

I took the dress and headed into a dressing room while my mom waited outside. The one she had picked out was a very classical looking dress. It had a curved neckline and was made out lace and had pearls all over it. When I moved my head it hit off the puffy shoulder pads. I looked in the mirror and didn’t think it was very me.

“I’m not sure about this one, mom. It’s kinda…puffy” I told her while she scrutinized the details on it.

“I don’t think so either. But keep the color in mind”

“What color is it?”

“Champagne. Try this one” she handed me another dress covered in plastic.

This one was strapless and plain and only went to my knee. It was also a lot whiter than the previous one. I barely had one foot out of the dressing room to show my mom before she told me she didn’t like it and handed me another one.

The next one was even worse. It had a corset that took my mom about fifteen minutes to do up and left me struggling to breathe.

“How about I try pick one?” I could see the hesitation on her face like she didn’t trust my judgment but she nodded and I strolled around the floor of the shop still finding it hard to breathe with the corset still in place. I may as well have been looking into a bush with my lack of expertise on wedding dresses so I picked up the first one in my size and brought it back to the dressing room to try on after my mom undid the vice around my waist.

When I tried it on it was a white, floor length dress with a v-neck and had some rhinestones under the bust. It was a slender fit and its train wasn’t too long at the back. It was no wear near as puffy as the first one, more flowy in fact and didn’t crush my abdomen like the one with the corset. Now for my mom’s verdict.

“What do you think of this one?” She stood up when she saw me and covered her mouth.

“Mom?”

“It’s perfect, honey” she said barely audible and covered her mouth.

“No, mom. Don’t cry please” I hugged her and she turned around so we could both look in the mirror. She took my hair down from the ponytail it was in and let it fall around my shoulders.

“So, do you think this the one?”

“Definitely. It suits you perfectly”

“I’ll put a payment on it then”

We went to a small Italian restaurant for something to eat after dress shopping. Though that was out of the way my mom’s to-do list was still pretty long.

“Do you think I should get a hat for the wedding?” she asked.

“That is entirely up to you, mom”

“I’m thinking lavender or lilac for my outfit. Has James gotten his suit yet?”

“No he hasn’t. Getting my dress has literally been the start of everything. But it’s just a suit, right? It wouldn’t take him as long to pick one out as it took me to find a dress. I mean, he doesn’t have to worry about beads or pearls or fabric. He’d probably get married in the overalls he wears working on cars…” my mom grimaced when I mentioned that. “Relax; I won’t let him wear what dad wore to your wedding anyways”

“Oh god…” we both laughed remembering my dad’s wine colored velvet suit he wore to his wedding. “I’m sure James will dress better than that and a better marriage too because you’re smarter than your dad and I were”

“Why did you guys split up?”

“It was around the time your dad started moving up in the police so he was working crazy hours. I had to look after you by myself then when your dad would get home, he’d sleep then go straight back out to work. We just didn’t see enough of each other and when that happens communication gets low, arguments start and well…but that won’t happen to you and James…he’s a good guy; he knows his responsibilities”

Our conversation was interrupted by my phone vibrating on the table with a text from James.

Signal is really crappy here. I have no idea what ring size I am. I don’t know where to get married. Our cake MUST have chocolate in it. No point in asking me about flowers. But I was thinking Italy for our honeymoon? I’ll try call you tomorrow. Tell Ollie I said goodnight. Love you x

I smiled, feeling a little more confident our marriage would be more successful than my parents’ one.

“Ready to get out of here?” I asked my mom. “Gotta pick Ollie up then we have a long day tomorrow with more planning”
