“Have you been to many punk gigs before?” I asked him as we stood in line to get into the gig.

“Nope…and for good reason too” he said looking around and presumably feeling out of place among all the other people with ripped jeans and mohawks.

“I think you’ll enjoy it”

“I will if they have a bar in here” he sighed.

There were a lot of crappy support bands on before my friends band so we sat in the corner of the club shouting at each other to communicate because the music was so loud. It was one of those small clubs that was packed to the brim with people so we were sitting sweating and squashed up beside each other drinking our first round of the evening.

“So you like your hair then?”

“Yeah, nobody knows who I am here! This music sucks by the way!”

“No it doesn’t!” I defended the music I loved.

“What does your friend play in the band?”

“Bass”

“Can I ask you a question?”

“You don’t have to keep asking me if you ask me a question!”

“What?” he shouted in my ear and I could smell the beer off his breath.

“Nothing. Go ahead”

“You live with your dad right? Where’s your mom?”

“She lives in Memphis with her boyfriend...he's an Elvis impersonator”

“Oh…do you get on with her?”

“Yeah, she’s cool”

He took a long sip of his drink and nodded his head to the beat of the fast music for a while. i guessed he was enjoying himself. He tapped me on the shoulder to get my attention.

“How old are you?”

“28”

“No really how old are you?”

“28!”

“Really?! You look like you’re twenty!”

“Thanks…?”

“You got a boyfriend?”

“I can’t hear you!”

“Nothing” he shook his head quickly. “You want another drink?” he pointed to my empty glass and I nodded in response because it was easier. “Save my seat”

He got up and went to the bar pushing past crowds of people and I put my feet on his seat so no one would take it.

“Ruth! You made it!”

“Hey Rich! Yeah wouldn’t miss it!” my bass playing friend spotted me through the sea of people.

“You here on your own?”

“No…my friend is getting drinks. When are you on?”

“Twenty minutes. See you in the front row?”

“For sure!” I saw James appear behind Rich with a less than amused expression on his face. Rich moved out of the way to let James sit back down. “This is Rich, my friend in the band” I said in his ear and he shook Rich’s hand and he soon left us alone. James could be very intimidating when he wanted to be and I knew Rich got that vibe.

“What is this?” I asked him, not recognizing the drink he’d gotten me.

“Just try it” I took a small sip of the drink he’d gotten me and it burned my chest straight away but tasted a little like cotton candy so I continued to drink it. “It’s good right?” he winked at me.

“Drink up, they’re on now” I nudged his arm.

“Can’t we just stay here?” he moaned.

“No!”

I grabbed his hand and pulled him to the crowd.

“Don’t get lost on me!” I warned him.

I realized we weren’t going to get to the front easily so I pulled my secret weapon out of my back pocket because I didn’t want to watch the concert from the back of the crowd.

“Watch this” I winked up at him.

I took out one of my dad’s old police badges from work in a leather case so it looked legit. I had that in one hand and James’ wrist in the other to drag him along. I flashed the badge and the crowed parted like the Red Sea. Soon we were at the rail.

“You’re crazy!” he mouthed to me over the music.

The band began to play and I caught James banging his head at the faster songs. I knew he wouldn’t admit it later, but he was having fun. It was hard not to. I even saw him shout some of the repetitive words back from a few of the songs and that put a smile on my face.

When the band finished playing we went outside and got some fresh air. It was much cooler than inside the club that felt more like the inside of an oven.

“What do you wanna do?” I asked him.

“I don’t know but I’m still kinda thirsty and it’s only 12am” he said looking at his watch.

“Alright. I know a little bar around the corner”

We went to a small bar called The Mill. It was nearly always empty and the drink was cheap, the music up to James’ standard and it was quiet enough to hold a round of conversation. I got a booth while James got the drinks. Both of us hadn’t drank since the one he had gotten us before the band was on so we were still moderately sober. However when I saw him coming towards me with a tray full of shots, I knew he was about to change that. And quickly.

“Oh my god are you serious?” the devious smile on his face told me all I needed to know.

“We’re gonna play ‘I have never…’”

“Never played it because I hate drinking games”

“C’mon it’s easy. You say ‘I have never’ followed by something you’ve never done before but if the other person has done it then you have to take a drink. Got it?” I nodded unenthusiastically. “Alright I’ll go first. I have never kissed a guy”

I took a glass and downed it because obviously I had kissed a guy before.

“Too easy, Hetfield. I have never broken a bone”

It was his turn to take a drink.

“I have never had my heart broken”

I took a drink. I was glad we weren’t going into details with this game.

“Um…I have never watched porn” I knew he’d have to drink with that one.

“Oh c’mon!” he threw his hands up in the air.

“Just drink it!” he drank it with ease.

“I have never skinny dipped”

Neither of us drank for that one.

“I have never had sex in public” I stated, seeing how far he was willing to push this.

He stared at the glass for a while before he drank it as if he was ashamed.

“I have never gone commando”

Dammit. He raised an eyebrow when I took a glass from the tray.

“What?”

“Nothing” he smirked.

After more mostly sexual confessions later, we were left with only one shot left. And it was
James’ turn to ask. We were both considerably drunk at this stage. We didn’t even care what we were admitting to have done anymore and everything was fifty times funnier. I knew we were probably annoying the other people in the bar with our laughing but I didn’t really care.

“I have never…” he began, slurring his speech and tried to think of something to say. “I have never found anyone I work for attractive”

“That’s not a fair question” I argued.

“Yes it is”

“No it’s not because technically you don’t work for anyone”

“Whatever. Just play the game, Ruth” he pushed the glass towards me as if he knew I was going to drink it. Call it beer goggles, call it the new haircut, call it whatever but I put the glass to my lips and let the Jager burn my chest for the last time.

I totally loved that game they played! James is definitely trying to say something subtly. I can just tell. Its obvious that James is starting to fall for her and I think her opinion of James is starting to change.

I REALLY like this story and can't wait for more!

Just a short part for now. (Forgot to say James is single in this :biggrin )

The sun woke me at…some time the next morning and my neck was killing me. I opened my eyes slowly and found that my head was resting on James’ thigh. He was asleep sitting upright with his arms crossed and his head against the window. We had fallen asleep in the backseat of his car. A knocking on the window made us both jump and made my headache a million times worse.

“Oh fuck…Ruth, it’s your dad” he swallowed nervously.

“No it’s not” I peeked up at the person knocking. It really was my dad. “Well roll down the window! He probably won’t even recognize you with your new hair” I hit his arm dismissively and hid back under the sweatshirt that covered me through the night.

“Sir, do you know you’re parked in a loading bay?” I heard my dad’s work voice and cringed.

“Uh…um…no, sorry, I didn’t. It was dark and I didn’t anticipate being here this long and--”he babbled on.

“Well I’m going to have to give you a ticket I’m afraid”

“No, dad. Don’t give him a ticket” I interrupted because I felt horrible about getting him fined.

“Ruth?!” he took off his sunglasses to get a proper look at me.

“Yeah…we went out last night and didn’t want to drive drunk so we stayed here. Right?” I glared at James to check out our story.

“Right” he agreed with me.

“Alright I won’t give you a ticket this time because you looked after my daughter but I can’t guarantee I’ll be so nice next time…”

“I won’t make a habit out of it Officer…Officer uh…”

“Bowe!” I whispered. He didn’t even know my last name but he knew I often went commando.

“Thanks Officer Bowe” he shook my dad’s hand through the window.

“I’ll see you guys later” I sat up and saw my dad walk towards a café.

“Thanks for that. I should keep you around more often if it means no police get in my way…I wonder if he can sort out my speeding tickets”

“Don’t push your luck, James”

“Oh my god, my head is killing me” he threw his head back against the seat and closed his eyes as if his headache just struck him.

“Yeah and I need coffee. There’s a Denny’s around the corner we can go to”

“Alright but I need to park somewhere else”

We went to a small Denny’s and both of us looked a mess. You could definitely tell we hadn’t been home and drank way too much last night; my mascara and eyeliner had smudged in my sleep and James had beer stains all over his black shirt. The old waitress brought us a glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee each. I took two aspirin out of my bag and slid them across the table to James.

“You carry these with you?” he asked surprised.

“Well, I knew you’d give me a headache one way or another…”

“Hey I was nothing but nice to you last night!”

“For a change…I can’t remember most of last night. Can you?”

“I remember going to the gig then going to that bar then…not much after that” he laughed.

“I remember you saying you wanted to go bowling at one point too”

“What?! You’re making that up!”

“I swear I’m not. Anyway. Pancakes?”

“I don’t care…” he rested his head on his arms and leaned on the table.

I ate a stack of blueberry pancakes to myself while James stayed slumped on the table the whole time. From what I can remember, we had a pretty good night. It was strange that he didn’t act the way he did with all the other female staff which was just get them drunk then love ‘em and leave ‘em. I hoped it stayed that way too and that when we went back to work, we could be civil, maybe even friendly with each other.

“Hey” I tapped the back of my fork on his head.

“Go away” he flipped me off.

“You driving me home or what?” the reply I got was a deep grunt. I left some bills on the table and we left.

We drove back towards San Francisco and the whole drive was quiet. If it wasn’t for James blaring Danzig on the car’s stereo I’d have fallen asleep on the way.

“Home sweet home” he said as we pulled up outside my house. “Tell your dad I’m sorry about earlier too”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll see you in Mexico”

“What?”

“You have a show in Mexico next week so I’ll see you then” I grabbed the handle to get out of the car.

“No wait!” he shouted.

“What?!” he reached across to the glove box and took out a pen and piece of paper and scribbled down some stuff. He handed it to me and it was his phone number and address on the back of a receipt.

“Call me. Maybe we can hang out again…before Mexico…?”

“I guess…when are you thinking?”

“Tonight?” he whispered.

“Um…”

“What? You don’t want to?” his blue eyes pleaded with me and he shook his head like he was embarrassed.

“No, no it’s not that it’s just that I don’t really understand all this…” I waved my hands in the air.

“All what?”

“Like…one minute you were mean and stuff to me but then you were really sweet and nice, like last night and I don’t really know where this is going. I just want you to know that I don’t want to be another notch on your bedpost that you go and tell the guys about the next day y’know?”

“That’s what you think this is? That I’m just trying to get in your pants?”

“I’ve seen what you’re like with women, James…” I sighed.

“You wanna pretend last night ever happened if that's what you think?”

“No! I had a good time last night, I told you that”

“Then why can’t we continue to do that? Two people can just be friends, Ruth”

“I know”

“So you’ll come over tonight?” he stared at me hopefully until I gave him an answer.

“Yeah okay but as friends”

“Friends” he nodded in agreement.

You better be careful with Officer Bowe, Jamie, or he will shoot your ass.
It seems him and Ruth are getting along quite well, which is surprising cos she doesn't seem to be James' type at all, but that's great.

Thanks guys, your comments make my day. :)

I caught up on some much needed sleep after James dropped me home. I got up around 4pm, showered and changed my clothes I figured sweatpants and an old, baggy Sex Pistols t-shirt would do since I was only going to James’ and it wasn’t a fancy occasion. When I got downstairs my dad was home and was finishing cooking dinner.

“Smells good” I sat at the kitchen table.

“Oh hey, kiddo. Hangover gone?”

“Yeah”

“Good. You can eat some of this then. You should have invited James over”

“Why would I do that?”

“Well from what I’ve seen you get along pretty well and he seems like a decent guy and—“

“It’s not like that, dad”

“No?” he asked. His expression showed some slight disappointment.

“No. Can we not have this conversation please? It’s embarrassing…” I cringed.

“Alright” he put a plate of lasagna in front of me and I tucked in. “You going out later?”

“Yeah; over to James’”

“And you say it’s not like that…”

“It’s not! We work together so we’re just trying to get along”

“Hmm” he said unconvinced of my argument.

“You staying in tonight?”

“Yeah it’s poker night. Jerry and the guys are coming over soon. Oh and your mom called while you were asleep”

“Really? Everything okay?”

“Yeah but…she’s coming up here on tomorrow with Tom”

“Oh god tomorrow?! Are you serious?”

“Unfortunately”

“That guy is an asshole. They better be staying in a hotel”

“Don’t be like that, Ruth”

“Dad! The guy showed me The Exorcist when I was nine! I had nightmares for weeks!” I looked at my dad and his shoulders were shaking like he was trying to not laugh. “Yeah it was hilarious, dad. Listen I have to go, thanks for dinner” I kissed him on the cheek and put my plate in the sink.

I drove to James’ place with the address he had given me. I had been to Kirk’s plenty of times and to Lars’ but never to James’ before so I didn’t really know what to expect. I wondered if it would reflect his macho image. I pulled up to his drive around 6pm and knocked on the door. I couldn’t explain the nervous feeling in my stomach after pressing the doorbell and waiting for him to answer.

“Come in” he smiled and I walked in beside him.

“Cool house…big” I commented shutting the large wooden door behind me and looked up at the high ceilings. His house smelt like wood and his cologne.

“Thanks, I guess. Have you eaten?”

“Yeah; my dad cooked dinner before I left”

“Good because I haven’t been shopping”

“So what have you got planned for tonight?”

“I got the footage from the concerts the other night so maybe we could watch that?” he leaned back against the kitchen counter.

“Yeah sounds good”

“Here” he handed me a bottle of beer.

“No thanks. I’m taking it easy for a while”

“Why?” he said as if I was crazy for rejecting the beer.

“Because I haven’t got an iron liver like you seem to have!”

“Alright relax, I was just being nice” he twisted the cap of his bottle. “This way”

We walked through to large white living room with a huge tv in the corner. I sat on one of the brown leather sofas and sank into it. It was longer than my bed. James put the tape in the machine and hit play but the screen was just full of fuzz.

“Dammit. Sorry about this…fuckin’ Lars” he stood in the middle of the room in his traditional white t-shirt and jeans with white socks slamming his thumb into the buttons on the remote control.

“Just leave it, we can just watch tv. I mean, we’ve already seen the show, right?”

“Yeah but—“ he threw himself onto the other end of the sofa. Even then he was still a good four feet away from me.

“It’s not a big deal, James”

“We can watch tv and talk and—“

“Take your shoes off” he pointed at my feet.

“Didn’t have you down as the house-proud type” he shrugged off my comment and handed me the remote after I took off my shoes.

“Find something”

I pressed the buttons and flicked through the channels. Out of the hundreds of channels he had there was only crap on tv. I settled on a wildlife show about penguins. I turned down the volume so we could hear ourselves talk.

“How’s your dad?” he began.

“He’s okay”

“And how are you? How’s your head after last night?”

“Better. Slept it off”

“I meant to ask you how you got this job”

“I worked at Guitar Centre for a few years and Kirk would come in and out and one day he mentioned to my boss he was looking for a new guitar tech and my boss told me to go for it and well, here I am” I laughed.

“I remember your first day” he smiled playing with the label on his beer.

“How do you remember my first day when you only noticed me a few days ago?”

“I remember you breaking the bridge on one of Kirk’s guitars in England and you started to panic and had my guitar tech fix it for you” he ignored my question.

“Yeah yeah but you didn’t even say a word to me until last Friday but you remember all that?”

His eyes flickered over to me but quickly diverted them again.

“Um…well you’re kind of…”

“Kind of what?” I was curious to know what he thought of me.

“You’re…intimidating…” he admitted shyly. My guess was that this wasn’t his first beer of the evening.

“Sorry, I don’t mean to be”

“I know I know…I think I’ve finally met my match with you”

“Haha really?”

“Yeah…I like the way you don’t take shit from anyone…especially me”

I didn’t really know how to reply to that one so I just stayed quiet and watched the tv screen for a while.

“You okay?” he broke the deafening silence between us.

“Yeah I’m fine”

“You don’t look fine”

“Jeez, thanks”

“I’m serious tell me what’s up”

“My mom and her boyfriend are coming up tomorrow”

“So? You said you got on”

“Yeah me and my mom do but Tom, her boyfriend, is a dick”

“Why?”

“He just is. He’s a fucking Elvis impersonator for god’s sake!” I shouted getting angry thinking about him.

“I think you should give him a chance to be honest. I mean, you gave me a chance and now we’re friends right?”

I nodded. “Right. Can I get a beer off you now please?”

He hopped up off the couch and walked to the kitchen. I didn’t know why but each time I saw him, he’d be nicer and nicer to me. Obviously there was the occasional insult thrown around but I guess that’s what friends did and according to him that’s what we were. Nothing more, nothing less.

We spent the rest of the night talking until we ran out of things to talk about and we both got drowsy from drinking. At around 3am I felt myself being carried over James’ shoulder. Because he thought I was asleep, I didn’t protest and he carried me upstairs even while drunk himself. He opened a door and placed me in a single bed then pulled the heavy duvet over me. I felt the back of his finger run down my cheek before he sighed and left the room.

Fuck.

Teehee I just loved this chapter! I love this story!

So while I was reading the part about how Ruth's mom's boyfriend Tom showed her The Exorcist when she was nine brought back a memory. When I was five or six, my Dad let me watch Aliens, which has scarred me for life! I have a terrible fear of the extraterrestrial :P

James definitely has feelings for Ruth. You can tell he is crushing on her. I think its sweet too that Ruth's dad likes James. Ruth's dad reminds me of my dad :)

More soon please!

“C’mon get up” The next morning I was woken by the bed shaking.

“What time is it?” I still had my eyes closed.

“12.30”

“Fuuuuck” I forced my eyes open and saw James standing in the room in his boxers. “For god’s sake put some clothes on”

“I think you’re forgetting this is my house” he stretched and yawned.

“Yeah but…forget it I really have to go”

“I won’t see you later?”

“My mom’s coming up remember?”

“Oh yeah” he sighed. “Well drive safe and stuff…”

I arrived home in a rush and called for my dad but he wasn’t home. The house was a mess. He obviously didn’t have time to clean up from his poker night because he had to go to work. The kitchen sink was full of plates and the living room was littered with empty chip packets and bottles of beer. I found a note on the coffee table.

Your mom should be here around four. I have to work tonight so I won’t get to see her. Tell her sorry. There’s food in the fridge so maybe you could cook that?

Love you, Dad.

Ugh. I knew he volunteered to take that shift so he wouldn’t have to face my mom. I looked in the fridge and there was a jar of spaghetti sauce and some meat. They’d have to settle on spaghetti because I’d have no time to go to the store and clean the house. Being neat was never a strong point for dad and I.

I showered and changed into something decent then began to clean up. How three men could make such a huge mess in such a short amount of time just by sitting at a table playing poker was beyond me. I vacuumed and polished then set about making dinner. I fried the meat and boiled the spaghetti closer to the time they’d be arriving.

At 4.10 there was a knock on the front door. I turned the gas down on the cooker and went to answer the door. My mom and Tom smiled when they saw me.

“Hey honey!” she walked in and hugged me.

“Hi mom” the only acknowledgement I gave Tom was a nod. “Go and sit inside and I’ll be in in a minute” I poured out two glasses of wine and brought them into the living room to them.

“So how are you? Where’s your dad?”

“I’m fine. Dad had to work. He got called in or something. He said he’s sorry though and he was looking forward to seeing you”

“That’s a shame. What happened to your arm?” she gasped.

“Oh it’s nothing. I just had an accident at work. Just needed a few stitches”

“Still working for that band, Ruth?” Tom interrupted.

“Yeah I am, Tom. I’m just going to check on dinner so I’ll be back in a few. Put the tv on or something”

“Mind if I go and freshen up upstairs?” my mom asked.

“No, go ahead”

I went back to the kitchen and set the table for three. Another knock on the door interrupted me getting something done. I hoped it was my dad coming home so it wouldn’t just be the three of us. When I opened the door James was standing there.

“What are you doing here?!”

“You forgot your bag earlier so I brought it over”

“James, I’ll see you tomorrow too. Mexico remember? My mom and Tom are here for dinner right now”

“Yeah but—“

“Ruth?” my mom came to the door.

“This your mom, Ruth?” James put on his charm.

“Yes” I rolled my eyes.

“Hi, I’m Tina. And you are?”

“James. Her uh…boyfriend”

No. NO he did not just say that.

“You never said you had a boyfriend, Ruth! Come in, James”

“Heh. Must have slipped my mind” I said through gritted teeth and stared him down as best I could.

“Seriously? She didn’t tell you about me?” he acted shocked.

“No! Will you stay for dinner?”

“Yeah sure” he winked at me.

I had no idea what was going on. I guess this was his idea of a joke. Both of them disappeared into the living room and I went back to the kitchen. I put another plate on the table for James. I heard them laughing and joking from the kitchen and presumed they were talking about me. I put the spaghetti on the table.

“Alright, dinner’s ready” I went into the living room and told them. They seemed to be getting along well. Too well. I let my mom and Tom go into the kitchen but stopped James and shut the kitchen door.

“What the hell are you doing?!” I hit his chest.

“Having fun” he smirked as if he was pleased with himself.

“This is fun to you? Y’know once you leave here, I’m never going to hear the end of this from my mom!”

“Aw cheer up, sweetie” he kissed my cheek.

“Hey! None of that! You’re not my boyfriend!”

“Whatever” he opened the door and took a seat opposite Tom.

The four of us sat at the table and ate in silence for a while before my mom spoke.

“So how long have you been together?”

“Eight months” James claimed.

“And all those times I talked to you on the phone you never mentioned it, Ruth”

“Well I was busy y’know”

“What do you do, James?”

“I’m a singer and play guitar in the band”

“Oh wonderful. I bet it’s great you two get to travel the world together”

“It’s awesome having her there all the time” he put his free hand on the top of my thigh while he spoke. I didn’t know if it was to keep up the façade or if he wanted an excuse to touch me. I swear if murder was legal…

“This is good, Ruth” Tom praised me with a mouth full of food.

“Yeah, how come you never cook for me?”

“Don’t push it” I whispered to him.

When we were done I cleared the table and sat in the garden on the bench that was in front of the window with James. My mom and Tom were in the living room full up after dinner. He had his arm around my shoulder still.

“You mad at me?” I didn’t answer him and that pretty much told him what I thought. “Want me to go?” I looked across at him and he looked like a puppy that had just done something wrong.

“No”

“Your mom’s staring at us from inside”

“So?”

“So I don’t think we’re acting much like boyfriend and girlfriend. I think we should be more convincing”

“Fuck off, James” I chuckled.

“Kiss me”

“I’m not kissing you”

“Why not? Afraid you might like it?” he boasted.

“No I’m not kissing you because all of this is so stupid. We’re NOT going out. You have me lying to my mom now!”

“She’ll get over it…what’s that over there?” I looked in the direction he pointed.

“What? There’s noth—“

When I turned my head around to look at him he leaned in quickly and planted a soft kiss that was barely even there on my lips.

“Get the fuck out of my house, Hetfield” I smiled and laughed.

“Alright I was going anyway” he grinned.

We got up and headed back into the house. I looked through the window and my mom wasn’t even there though he said she was staring at us.

“Nice to meet you, Tina” he shook her hand in the kitchen.

“Aw are you leaving, James?”

“Yeah. Gotta go home and pack. We’re off to Mexico tomorrow”

“Well I hope I see you again soon”

I walked him to the door.

“See you at the airport tomorrow?”

“Yep” he hugged me and strutted out to his truck.
