In a war-torn world like the Planet, the player has the choice of joining a faction to gain missions and rank up. These factions will be listed below, and will require your character to push him/herself to the limits at later ranks! Joining factions isn't just done at start-up, though. You need to prove yourself first! To join a faction you need to have earned at least 20 Mako Points, and do an in-character test. This test might seem like something stupid, but you need to show your worth to the faction you wish to join, and more importantly, you can let this test count as one of your D-Rank missions! Missions and earned MP needed to rank up:
Here is a map of the Planet to give you an indication where the factions are located. Map Now, without further ado: The factions! Edited by Vaz, Apr 29 2012, 08:02 PM.

Shinra Electric Power Company Shinra Electric Power Company. The planet's main producer of energy, through its Mako reactors. It is a violent and imperialistic organization, having once conquered almost the entire world. But, since it lacked the power of Zack Fair, Angeal Hewley, Genesis Rhapsodos, and Sephiroth, they never succeeded in conquering Wutai, and with help from this country, the Western Continent rose up as well. Shinra is still a grand military force, but spread thin across its territories. It is more concentrated on protecting its lands against eco-terrorist groups and other hostile factions. Shinra Ranks are as following: D - Private C - Lieutenant B - Captain A - Colonel S - General All of Shinra's troops obey the President of Shinra. Regular Shinra troops do the standard stuff, from guard patrols at rank D to regulating large-scale offenses or taking out the most dangerous targets with the help of a squad at General rank. Turks One of Shinra's subfactions are the Investigation Sector of the General Affairs Department, usually nicknamed Turks. They handle the more stealthy aspects of Shinra's business, namely tracking down liabilities and those who leave Shinra without permission, but also assassination, kidnapping, and infiltration. To join the Turks, the character needs to do a seperate stealth test after they complete all of their Lieutenant level missions but before they start their Captain missions, and it will take up a Mission slot. This stealth test has a reasonable chance of failure, but it's certainly not impossible. To rank up further, the Turk must take a test every time he wants to rank up, and needs to be B-rank in Shinra to rank up to B-Rank Turk as well. Contrary to the first Turk test, the other two Turk Tests can be taken at any time after the character completes the missions for the complementary rank. Turks gain seperate ranks instead of their standard Shinra ranks. B - Officer A - Executive S - Elite So a Turk with S-Rank in both Shinra and the Turks would have the title Elite, but a Turk who never ranked up after joining the Turks would be Officer despite having all S-Rank missions completed in Shinra. Tests cannot be skipped, so no taking the Elite test while you are still Officer! Once a character joins the Turks they gain access to Turk missions, mainly consisting of Black Ops. SOLDIER SOLDIERs are the pinnacle of Shinra's military force, and can be joined by a Shinra-aligned character as soon as they complete all of their B-Rank missions in Shinra. At this point, they have to do a test to make sure they are fit to join SOLDIER, most likely by supporting a division of Shinra troops or a 1st Class SOLDIER in a large-scale offense. These missions are VERY dangerous and carry a possibility of death! B - 3rd Class A - 2nd Class S - 1st Class 2nd Class test can only be accessed after completing all the missions for A-Rank, and 1st Class test can only be accessed after completing all missions for S-Rank! Keep in mind that this follows the same system as the Turks; Even if you continue to do missions for later ranks instead of directly taking the test, your class title will be the same as the highest test you have completed! Also, you cannot skip tests! Once you join SOLDIER you gain access to dangerous missions, supporting Shinra troops in large offenses for 3rd Class, supporting 1st Class SOLDIERs for 2nd Class, and defeating either many average, or several strong enemies on your own at 1st Class. Wutai A strongly honor-bound country located on a long, somewhat crescent-shaped island to the west of the Western continent, Wutai is a military force mirroring Shinra's. They aren't nearly as large as Shinra in territorial aspect, but the Northern Continent, which belongs to Shinra, is very thinly populated, and the Eastern Continent also has most of its people in Midgar. Wutai, on the other hand, is closely packed with people, with Wutai City stretching from almost the northern point of the continent all the way down to a large bay, encompassing hundreds of square kilometers. Wutai's troops may look archaic, but their technology easily equals Shinra's. Wutai Ranks are as following: D - Strike Unit C - Strike Leader B - Force Leader A - Force Master S - Legion Master All of Wutai's troops obey the Emperor of Wutai. Regular Wutai troops do the standard stuff, from guard patrols at rank D to regulating large-scale offenses or taking out the most dangerous targets with the help of a squad at Legion Master rank. Crescent Unit The Crescent Unit is a sub-organization from Wutai's military, the elite fighting force of Wutai. The Crescent Unit is said to appease the wrath of Leviathan and smite the enemies of Wutai, and skilled not only in combat but also in espionage. They are the Wutai counterpart for Shinra's Turks, they work as assassins and infiltrators. To join the Crescent Unit, the character needs to do a seperate stealth test after they complete all of their Strike Leader level missions but before they start their Force Leader missions, and it will take up a Mission slot. This stealth test has a reasonable chance of failure, but it's certainly not impossible. To rank up further, the Crescent must take a test every time he wants to rank up, and needs to be B-rank in Wutai to rank up to B-Rank Crescent as well. Contrary to the first Crescent test, the other two Crescent Tests can be taken at any time after the character completes the missions for the complementary rank. Crescent Units gain seperate ranks instead of their standard Shinra ranks. B - Novus A - Phantasma S - Nomen So a Crescent with S-Rank in both Wutai and the Unit would have the title Nomen, but a Crescent who never ranked up after joining the Crescent Unit would be Novus despite having all S-Rank missions completed in Wutai. Tests cannot be skipped, so no taking the Nomen test while you are still Novus! Once a character joins the Crescent Unit they gain access to Crescent missions, mainly consisting of Black Ops. Eclipse Unit The Eclipse Unit is a relatively new unit among Wutai's ranks. Formed barely a year ago as a counterpart to Shinra's SOLDIER, the Eclipse Unit is either strengthened by natural means or by magic, but not genetics. The Wutai believe that this would mean stooping to Shinra's level by modifying the troop at the basic level and thus making them lose their humanity. They are strong, every one of them, and capable of taking on multiple enemies at once. B - Tertium A - Secundum S - Primus Secundum test can only be accessed after completing all the missions for A-Rank, and Primus test can only be accessed after completing all missions for S-Rank! Keep in mind that this follows the same system as the Crescent Unit; Even if you continue to do missions for later ranks instead of directly taking the test, your class title will be the same as the highest test you have completed! Also, you cannot skip tests! Once you join the Eclipse Unit you gain access to dangerous missions, supporting Wutai troops in large offenses for Tertium, supporting Primus Eclipse Units for Secundum, and defeating either many average, or several strong enemies on your own at Primus. The Free Cities of the West Shinra once held the Western Continent, placing Mako Reactors everywhere, and starting towns and places such as the Gold Saucer and Cosmo Canyon. But unrest was boiling in the Western Continent, and Shinra's grip was starting to loosen in the Western Continent. Wutai saw its chance, and supported several rebelling groups with weapons and Materia. The West rose up, and evicted Shinra from the continent. The seperate towns and cities formed city states, the biggest being the Mt. Corel region, consisting of North Corel and the Gold Saucer, Costa Del Sol, Gongaga, and the Rocket Town/Nibelheim alliance. Cosmo Canyon declared independence too, but not as a military force. They devoted their life to researching the planet. The Free Cities have bonds with each other and Wutai, alliances against the large military force of Shinra. Free City Ranks are as following: D - Footman C - Knight B - Knight-Adamant A - Knight-Commander S - Lord-Commander All of the Free Cities' troops obey the Lord-Mayor's of every city, and the appointed Warmaster. Regular City troops do the standard stuff, from guard patrols at Footman rank, to regulating large-scale offenses or taking out the most dangerous targets with the help of a squad at Lord-Commander rank. Gray Rangers The Gray Rangers were a group of Western Continent men who fled to Wutai, joining the Crescent Unit and learning their tactics. They assisted the Western Uprising, and afterwards, stayed there with the grace of the Emperor of Wutai. After several years they had made themselves the reconnaisance/black ops elite of the Free Cities, and took on the name 'Gray Rangers' for their gray cloaks, the same gray of the Wutai Crescent Unit. To join the Gray Rangers, the character needs to do a seperate stealth test after they complete all of their Knight level missions but before they start their Force Knight-Adamant missions, and it will take up a Mission slot. This stealth test has a reasonable chance of failure, but it's certainly not impossible. To rank up further, the Ranger must take a test every time he wants to rank up, and needs to be B-rank in the Free Cities to rank up to B-Rank Ranger as well. Contrary to the first Ranger test, the other two Ranger Tests can be taken at any time after the character completes the missions for the complementary rank. Gray Rangers gain seperate ranks instead of their standard City ranks. B - Tracker A - Hunter S - Woodsmaster So a Ranger with S-Rank in both City and the Gray Rangers would have the title Woodsmaster, but a Ranger who never ranked up after joining the Gray Rangers would be Tracker despite having all S-Rank missions completed in the Cities. Tests cannot be skipped, so no taking the Woodsmaster test while you are still Tracker! Once a character joins the Gray Rangers they gain access to Ranger missions, mainly consisting of Black Ops. Sentinels Among the Western Uprising, there was a small group of rebels who had been magically training, and genetically modifying themselves with material stolen from Shinra. They equaled the power of SOLDIER, and became the guardians of the Free Cities, the Sentinels. Capable of incredible feats of strength, the Sentinels are loyal to the bone to the Free Cities, and will protect their freedom with their lives. B - Warden A - Vanguard S - Arbiter Vanguard test can only be accessed after completing all the missions for A-Rank, and Arbiter test can only be accessed after completing all missions for S-Rank! Keep in mind that this follows the same system as the Gray Rangers; Even if you continue to do missions for later ranks instead of directly taking the test, your class title will be the same as the highest test you have completed! Also, you cannot skip tests! Once you join the Sentinels you gain access to dangerous missions, supporting City troops in large offenses for Warden, supporting Arbiter Sentinels for Vanguard, and defeating either many average, or several strong enemies on your own at Arbiter. |
