New York City, New York. New York. This city is known for its history as a gateway for immigration to the United States and its status as a financial, cultural, transportation, and manufacturing center. With a population over 18,000 many of the residents have to rely on public transportation because of the traffic. Either a subway or a cab is your best bet. In this case we open up inside of a New York Subway. We are first greeted with the putrid smell of hobo piss before we notice this car is fairly packed all of the seats are occupied as the others stand grasping a metal pole to secure their saftey. Sitting on the ground against the side of the car is none other then EWF's own Jay Encina. Encina is clad in a black "Tap Out or Knock Out" t-shirt. A faded black St. John Bay jeans and white Nike Air sneakers. Encina's looks forward as his expression is very firm and focused. I gotta get my focus on. I dont know why Ive been loosing lately but I gotta get my fire back on. I cant loose anymore. I cant... Encina sits their like the total bad ass he is as his phone suddenly ring. The camera focuses the caller ID of the phone and it shows there that one of EWF's road crew is calling him. The whole Mayhem roster are either there preparing to go there in Bulgaria for their upcoming show there.. As for Jay? Well let's just say, he wants a little warm up before his match with the undefeated Monica Blaze. Anyway, Jay answers his phone in the most bad ass way he can. What? Mr. Mercer asked me to call you... And he wants me to ask you if when will you follow us here in Bulgaria I still got stuff to take care here in the US. Just tell him to dont worry too much. I'll be there. But he wants me to know your ETA. Just make up something... The subway slows down abit as everybody inside jerks forward and whiplash back. We hear a loud ding overhead as the driver tell us our current stop. The ring crew on the other line continues to speak but Jay cant hardly hear him. Like when? WHAT? I CANT HEAR YOU... I SAID WHEN? I GOTTA GO NOW. I'LL JUST CALL HIM WHEN I'M IN BULGARIA ALREADY... But... But... The train slows down and everybody jerks forward again. Encina climbs to his feet and Jay closes his phone's flip top and he puts it inside his pocket. He brushes off the dirt off his pants as he exits the train. Fade out. Fade in to Jay Encina already on the top street as he hails a taxi. A traditional New York yellow cab pulls over in front of him as Jay throws in his back pack inside and then goes in himself. The moment Jay was in, the taxi revved up and got going. Cut to Inside, we see black man with balding white hair and white beard looks Jay up from his center rearview mirror. The black man studies him as it begins to speak. Where to man? Here's the address... The black man turns around to get the piece of paper Jay is handing him. Ah... You know that place? 'Course I do. Me and mah homies hang out there once or twice a month. You know, get some beers and some that shit. Yeah. As the taxi navigates through the busy streets of 5th Avenue, you can see the intensity in Jay Encina's eyes. Meanwhile the driver still eyes him from the rearview mirror. Jay, on the other hand, begin to notice that too but he just let's go of it. The driver suddenly speaks. So what you here for New York? Jay, obviously his mind on something else, was surprised of the driver's question. What's that? Ahm just asking what brings you to NYC? Ah mean, yeah we got a whole lot of people comin' in here from all over the globe. You know... People from England, from France, from Italy... I was born and raised in St. Louis... Oh... The good 'ole gateway to the West. Mah daddy use to go there just to get those oh so famous and delicious St. Louis beer. Yeah? Yeah... Plus mah momma use to have a relative livin' there so we use ta visit them like every Spring or somethin'... But I think they already move to Atlanta... (Pauses)... Yeah I think they already move to Atlanta so I havent been there for quite some time already. Jay just ignores him as he still have his focus on the streets outside but his mind is wandering elsewhere. He was surprised once again when the driver tries to spark another conversation with him. So how's everyone's doin' down there in St. Louis? Just fine... Everything's ok... Well fine sounds good to me... Ah mean its better fine than bad aint it? He-he... (faking his laugh)Yeah...(looks back out the window) With just a couple of miles away from his destination, the taxi that Jay Encina is riding came to a halt to a heavy traffic. We hear horns of the other taxis and vehicles in front of them. We even hear drivers sticking out their heads outside of the windows and screaming curses to the others to hurry up. Jay just shakes his head. Ah know... (looks at the driver irrately)What? With the way ya shake your head... I know what you mean by that? (laughs a little)... Yeah traffic in New York City is the worse thing since Tupac's murder! Ah mean, I have been going at it back and forth for all of mah life but til now I cant still stand it! Jay ignores the driver again as he goes back looking at the streets outside where we see people already walks off from their respective cabs and decided to walk. Suddenly the driver turns on his radio. The music starts to play and it's playin' “What's Goin' On” by Marvin Gaye. The driver starts nodding his head. Oh yeah... That's what I'm talking about... This old school baby... That Chris Brown, Akon, Neyo, T-Pain and all that you got today is nothing compared to tha music of the original king of R'N'B! Marvin Gaye baby! We can see the annoyance in Jay's facial expression as he tries his best to ignore the old driver. The driver started moving and swaying and singing badly... louder and louder... TALK TO ME, SO YOU CAN SEE... Come on man! Sing with me! WHAT'S GOIN' ON? YAAAA, WHAT'S GOIN' ON! AAAHH, WHAT'S GOIN' ON!! Jay had enough. He suddenly shouted at the driver. SHUT UP!! The driver stops singing. He also turns off the radio. He just keeps quiet and stares back and forth to the traffic and the rearview mirror to eyes Jay. Jay wipes the sweat from his forehead and looks at the driver. He begins to speak. Look I'm sorry man... It's just that I'm having a rough week... I'm a wrestler and it's just this past few weeks, I've been going through lose after lose after lose and it's kinda getting into me already. The driver just looks at him in the rearview mirror then turns his eyes on the traffic again. And this week, I have to go through to a tough opponent again. Yes I know my friends have my back but I cant always rely on them to win matches. I dont want to turn my career into a total fluke by winning with a lot of run ins. I got to strive to win some on my own too. It's just that I think I've lost a lot of my focus this past few weeks. And behind all this brave words, all this talking shit, I think I'm really the one intimidated, not them. The taxis starts running already. The taxi that Jay is in starts running too. Jay eyes the driver. The driver just focus his sites on the road. Jay just looks outside. To his surprise, the taxi driver speaks. I dont know much about wrestling but I do know a whole lot about self esteem and all that shit. You see here man, it seems to me that it's not your opponents is giving you the hard time...(Pauses) (Jay is eagerly listening)... It's you... It's you that is giving yourself the hard time... (Looking confuse)What do you mean? By the way I analyze your body language since the time you stepped into my car, I've read that you are a perfectionist and you dont settle on small things. When you do it, you want to do it big already. It's not that it's wrong but what's wrong is how you're doing it. Jay looks at the driver in the rearview mirror. Tell me what's your main goal in your wrestlin' career? Winning the World Title... Now tell me what's your mindset for your upcoming match? Beat her immediately and go on to my next match and move a little closer to my goal... See... That's where you take it wrong? What do you mean? You're in a match and yet you're already thinking the things that will happen when you win. The tendency is... It distracts you. Not because you think that you can beat that opponent of yours, means you can actually beat him. All ya need to do is take that thoughts and put it right in here... The driver puts his fist on the left side of his chest. ...Coz another thoughts can distract the brain and the thoughts you focus on will be lose. But if you put in your heart, it will stay there. It will lead you. It will guide you. It will tell you what to do... The taxi suddenly pulls up to a bistro called 40/40. The driver faces Jay. Here ya go bud. West 25th Street. Jay opens his doors and steps out. The taxi driver pulls down the windows on the front seat. Jay peeks through it. How much do I owe you? Just 40 bucks for you... Jay scrambles to his pocket and found a $50 bill. He hands it to the driver. Keep the change...Thanks for the ride and the inspirational talk. Thanks bud and good luck on your next match... And remember (puts his fist again on his chest)... Keep it here... (Smiles a little) I will... The driver closes the windows of the front seat and took off leaving Jay standing looking at drove off through the busy 25th Street. When the taxi is out of site. Jay picks up his bag and looks at the facade of the 40/40 club. This is it... The place where all this fighting career started... With the words of the taxi driver and going back to my roots, I think I will have a nice chance against Monica Blaze this Thursday... Jay proceeds to enter the entrance as he talks with the bouncer. The bouncer goes to his list and lets Jay in as the scene fades. End Scene |
