And now for the only significant part of SSB discussion threads, awful fanboyism!!!!

D'PROW'S LIST:

Most Plausible Characters and justifications:

Mario Franchise: Rosalina (confirmed), tbh I think the franchise is full now -- Bowser Jr., Captain Toad, Waluigi, Geno, etc. aren't notable enough

Zelda Franchise: Ganondorf returning is given. Tetra? Depends on if the spirit tracks Darknut is an assist trophy or not. Tetra is probably the most logical choice for Sheik's moveset, and iirc "Toon Zelda" was being considered for Brawl. Impa actually might be a better choice but I don't think anyone cares about Impa.

Pokemon Franchise: Jigglypuff will not be returning due to playing too similarly to the Villager (hey. You ain't know! You ain't even had played yet!). Other than that, Mewtwo. Don't need to design an entirely new character, 90's kids will get the reference, showcase Mega Evolution as a final smash without changing a final smash from Brawl like Mega Charizard/Lucario would be. I get the feeling 1st gen Pokemon Trainer will return with a costume swap for Green but I think Mewtwo is the safest bet due to his consistent popularity, veteran status, and prominence in X and Y. (Aside: due to the theme of better female representation, they might make this a female Mewtwo because I think the one in the new movie (which is implied to be the Kalos one and not the Kanto one) is female? I liked how Ivysaur was canonically female or maybe noncanonically female in Brawl)

Kirby Franchise: Probably full, assuming the return of King Dedede and Meta Knight (King Dedede is almost definitely going to be announced for the Japanese release of Kirby 3D Triple D, and Meta Knight is definitely not not returning). Bandanna Waddle Dee is probably the best bet due to his relatively high playability in Kirby games, most notably Return to Dreamland (Kirby Super Star Ultra cementing him as a distinct character and the "strong" waddle dee in the arena helps as well). Waddle Doo has the next best shot for maybe being a bit more eye-conic and being playable in almost as many games, but I think no new rep is most likely and Waddle Dee is second most likely.

Donkey Kong Franchise: I think Dixie Kong is a given, probably going to be announced when Donkey Kong's Tropic Thunder comes out. K. Rool hasn't been in a real video game in like 20 years and I think for whatever reason Nintendo considers the Kringlings more of Rare's IP, due to their absence from real video games. Dixie was also in that stupid Deadly 7 secret leak in the Brawl files like Toon Zelda.

Wario Franchise: Almost definitely full. Wario Land: The Shake Dimension wasn't really popular enough to warrant Captain Syrup, and I doubt any WarioWare character is individually notable enough to stand out as playable. In the unlikely event Waluigi is promoted from assist trophy, it's possible he would be considered part of the Wario franchise despite never appearing in any Wario game.

Yoshi Franchise: Yoshi's boppin' new dino pal from his latest game! Nah, full. If Yoshi had even been revealed yet I would say there was a chance a character from Yoshi's New Island or Yarn Yoshi coming in, but I assume Sakurai's just saving the announcement to advertise whichever one of those comes out first. Since there are two relatively major Yoshi games I'd say there's some chance, but of all the IPs to potentially introduce I don't have a great feeling about this one -- and not every first-party release has come with an announcement (most notably X & Y).

Metroid Franchise: Probably full, assuming Zero Suit Samus returns.

Star Fox Franchise: I'd consider Star Fox lucky to keep all three of its reps from Brawl. It's already over-represented, and the fact that the only game in like the last 5 years was a port doesn't bode well. If E3 or a Nintendo Direct breathes new life in the franchise, I think Krystal is the most likely rep.

F-Zero Franchise: Worse off than Fox, although less over-represented. Although it's doubtful, the most plausible thing I've heard is Ganondorf being revamped and his current moveset going to Black Shadow. However, unlike Star Fox which is probably going to get a shitty reboot, F-Zero has almost certainly been eaten by Mario Kart. My top choice for a Mario Kart rep is Waluigi.

EarthBound Franchise: Unfortunately, I think EarthBound is going to be lucky to keep both Ness and Lucas. The popularity of the series is probably better, but Mother 3 didn't just come out and there aren't really any standout reps besides Ninten, who no one wants along with Ness???

Kid Icarus Franchise: Some people think Palutena has a chance. I don't know why?

Ice Climber Franchise: Probably the most likely veteran to drop out, due to Pit, G&W, and ROB more adequately representing classic Nintendo. Although for some reason I get the feeling Ice Climbers are going to stay in. TBH I would have announced them to get people hyped for NES Remix which is almost definitely going to be the only game/thing related to Ice Climbers until SSB4 is released.

Fire Emblem Franchise: Chrom is boring and protagonist and sword enough that I want to say he's given. I doubt Ike will be returning. Lucina also has a good chance for the same reasons as Chrom. Someone who isn't Marth or from the latest game is unlikely considering past trends.

Game & Watch Franchise: Mr. Game and Watch will probably be returning because if they wanted to root him out they probably would have done it in Brawl. When you consider SSB as more of a retrospective than an advertisement hoedown it makes sense to include him as part of Nintendo's history, at least I think.

NES Peripheral Franchise: It kills me to say it, but ROB probably has the worst chances (probably even worse than Ice Climbers) of being a returning franchise. Based on G&W's staying power, his unique moveset, and the fact that the NES coming with a cool robot probably saved the medium, I certainly think he's justified to return, but I'm also horribly biased towards cool robots.

Third-Party Franchises: I wouldn't be surprised one way or another if Snake did or didn't come back. I'd like to see a Metal Gear on the Wii U, but even neglecting that the fact he has a cool unique moveset and Kojima and Sakurai are presumably still friends makes him probably the most likely third-party rep. I am not educated enough in third parties to make a good guess here, but Pac-Man is conceivable, and Bayonetta would make sense considering how much Platinum and Nintendo are suckin' each other's dicks.

Animal Crossing Franchise: Another character is doubtful, but Female Villager Skin seems pretty obvious to me.

Wii Franchise: Mii has a nontrivial chance but it confuses me when I try to think how they would implement it. I think Villager using bowling balls and Wii Fit Trainer doing the Wii Fit things probably hurts the chances of this but dumber things have happened.

New IPs: I am more biased here than I am towards ROB, and that's saying something, but Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles would be a good representation of Nintendo's new IPs, cater a bit towards the more hardcore fans who whine about Project Rainfall and stuff, and possibly build excitement for X. Dillon from Dillon's Rolling Western is fairly icon and would definitely fit in, but I think that did relatively poorly, idk.

Even with just these we'd be at 37, and that's cutting a lot of veterans. Not really sure what the practical cap for the 3DS version is, but I'd be surprised if the roster was significantly over 40. STAY TUNED FOR MY BAD IDEAS/JOKES

D'PROW'S LIST OF STUPID SHIT I WANT:

Mario Franchise: Paper Mario would be real cool I swear. Probably even less likely than he was for Brawl considering M&L seems to have taken over as the Mario RPG series. Petey Piranha would be my ideal spin-off/GCN era rep, but his lack of prominence in more recent titles makes that even less likely.

Zelda Franchise: Tingle (possibly representing his own franchise) would be really great but he hasn't been in much lately. BUT WIND WAKER HD BROUGHT HIM BACK TO OUR HEARTS AND MINDS. Not sure if this is more or less feasible but I have been gunning for a Link-esque character who uses weirder items for a while, and Ravio would be a cute nod to Link Between Worlds' popularity. A lot of people on GameFAQs think Ghirahim has a chance and I think they are stupid.

Pokemon Franchise: I want Pichu back and for some reason I want Mega Heracross but I feel like including him sort of invalidates the slightly more feasible things I want. :/ Plusle and Minun would be a cute replacement for Ice Climbers, basically function as giving Pichu back, and be a good way to hype up 3rd gen remakes, AND they were in the secret deadly 7 files, but uh I'm not getting my hopes up.

Kirby Franchise: Keeby because I think it would be funny. Gooey would be neat if for some reason people pretend to care about Kirby's Dream Land 3 again. I think Sakurai self-censoring probably means no more Kirby reps and inexplicably a second Kid Icarus rep.

Donkey Kong Franchise: Although I like K. Rool, Cranky Kong is almost feasible due to Donkey Kong's Arctic Burst and I would probably main him on principle.

Wario Franchise: I think Kat and Ana should probably replace the Ice Climbers.

Yoshi Franchise: I think that Baby Mario Bros. should probably replace the Ice Climbers.

Metroid Franchise: Remember Me? If the series wasn't fucking ruined and dead I would more seriously support Sylux considering there was a Sylux-lookin' thing at the end of Metroid Prime 3.

Star Fox Franchise: Sly Cooper.

F-Zero Franchise: That dumb thing I said about Black Shadow earlier

EarthBound Franchise: Jeff? Mr. Saturn? I should probably play more. Actually maybe Poke/r/ky

Kid Icarus Franchise: I wouldn't really be opposed to Palutena, but I like Viridi more.

Ice Climber Franchise: please give your mechanic to something more interesting

Fire Emblem Franchise: Hector Anyone without a sword and blue hair

Game & Watch Franchise: octops danc

NES Peripheral Franchise: Virtual Boy & Power Glove

Third-Party Franchises: Crono (Square-Enix), Bomberman (Hudson), Prince of All Cosmos (Namco), Phoenix Wright (Capcom), Terezi Pyrope (Namco), Wreck-It Ralph (SEGA), Banjo-Kazooie (Rare).

But really mostly just Phoenix Wright

Animal Crossing Franchise: Tom Nook as a partial villager clone with a bunch of Tanooki Mario moves as reference/jokes that only 90's kid can get

Wii Franchise: eh

New IPs: Shulk Shulk SHulk SHluk HSulhk shul Kh suklh shlukh Professor Layton would be pretty cool I guess Denpa MEN Tokyo Crash Mobs would still be a more fucking relevant use of the Ice Climbers mechanic
