Historical Unless Otherwise Rule In the absence of clear posts or orders to the contrary, and in a roughly similar environment, events that are not explicitly dealt with are generally assumed to have happened as they did historically. This rule is designed to give structure to a shifting alternate timeline where little details may easily get lost in the big picture. It frequently is applied to the lives of individuals where small differences may result in enormous changes later on. The staff and players cannot take into account every conceivable change from the butterfly effect, although we strive to do so where crucial aspects of history are in question. Another way of phrasing the rule might be "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." Just because you didn't post about Lenin traveling to Munich in 1900, that does not mean it did not occur, unless there is a reasonable argument to the contrary. This rule generally does not apply to major developments (like diplomatic crises) unless the nation in question is currently unplayed, or to events that are not posted because the player deliberately is avoiding them as a matter of strategy. However, in the latter case it is recommended that you let the staff know, either through orders or OOC notification, so it can be on record in case an issue arises later. The 'Soviet Limo' Rule Players may not have significant figures in their national history arbitrarily killed off by a set of unlikely events. Exceptions to this rule are numerous, considering its scope, but the aim is to prevent players from finding convenient solutions to complicated political problems in the death of a major figure. Its etymology comes from a deliberately humorous event in one 1940's game where Gandhi was struck dead by a wildly swerving Soviet limousine, in an effort to forestall the Indian independence movement. Stewarding Players who already have a full-time nation may apply to "steward" (keep warm) another country that is currently not played full time. This permits more nations to remain active during lulls or vacations. The stewarded nation must be distinct enough from the player's main so that there is no conflict of interest, and the player must get the approval of the staff before signing any diplomatic or other deals that involve both countries. The stewarded nation will officially remain open for new recruits. Generally, the actions of stewarded nations are more restricted than those of primary accounts. The player may be prevented from doing certain things (such as declaring war) and subject to additional oversight by the staff, in order to preserve the flow of the game. |
