Common Name: Eastern Garter Snake, Garter Scientific Name: Thamnophis sirtlatis sirtlatis Range: Eastern North America Heating: If your room is warm enough, an under tank heater should be fine, and an aquarium bulb (the kind used to light fish tanks) can be used to see them Cage Size: Hatchlings and Juveniles can be kept in a 10 gallon, and a pair of adults will do well in a 30 gallon or larger. They do very well in sterilite tubs with plenty of ventilation aswell. Garter snakes are semi-aquatic snakes and need a large water bowl that they can get in and swim. The land part should stay dry all the time. They normally stay on the ground but they will use sticks, vines, and plants to get off the ground. As with any snake always provide a hide box. Your setup can be as detailed or as simple as you would like. Substrate: Coconut Fiber (EcoEarth), Aspen, Bark, Cypress, Newspaper, Paper Towel, Carpet, Dead Leaves, Potting Soil, and large Round Stones all work well for garter snakes. Diet: Garter Snakes have a varied diet of newborn mice, guppies, small toads and frogs, salamanders, and earthworms. Be sure not to feed your snakes poisonous amphibians, and never feed goldfish due to toxins in their systems which can lead to blindness and death. Maximum Size: At the largest, garter snakes can reach 3-4 ft. Note: Garter snakes can easily be collected from under plywood and tin around water in woods, fields, and ponds. Some can be very aggressive and most will eagerly musk its capturer. Garter snakes and their close relatives water snakes (nerodia) all give live birth |
