The Region that Works
By Tadin

Every region experiences its growing pains. The question is not whether we will survive these pains. It is when we finally decide to harness it, control it and direct it to where we see ourselves. I really can sense that many in this region are champing at the bit to see our region become a force to be reckoned with. We have work to do.

Mordor is a Community

Mordor is a rather exceptional region. More than any other, this is a region whose very name brings a certain amount of swagger. A certain tone. And a certain way of doing things. Unlike any other region, we are sitting on a unique identity that everyone in Nation States knows. We are Mordor. The name itself evokes almost romantic images of backroom deals and horse trading. Real politics between power brokers. In the end, getting things done for everyone once quid pro quo is worked out. As a RL Chicagoan, this feels rather homey to me.

Aside from a strong sense of identity, Mordor is fortunate to have committed, talented individuals who not only feel enthusiasm for the government we are building, but who have a real stake in the community we have created. I see through the chats on the IRC, we have a group of people that genuinely like each other. We can go into the Nazgul and have feverish debates about policy and hours later, we can bond on the chat and the roleplays. Our ability to incorporate new people to our community stand amongst our greatest strength. Without the ability to welcome new people to the forum, our region is dead.

The only thing that binds Mordor together greater than its community is its determination to become the greatest region in Nation States. The tireless recruitment efforts made by our government and our effective military is nothing short of a testament of our resolve to achieve this dream. The drive this there. The talent is there. The potential for greatness is within reach. We just need to take a step back and think it through. What a waste ambition can be if it is not guided with vision.

Let’s Build Mordor in Mordor’s Image

Think for a second about what this region could look like. With all of our talent, Mordor will achieve greatness once it is awaken to how that looks. The future of Mordor is a region with high activity that welcomes everyone to try their hand at a notoriously serious political system. One that rewards loyalty and encourages entrepreneurial spirit. A region that loves to play the game of politics and gets creative with it, yet at the same time understands that at the end of the day, our house must be in order. When needed, our elected officials can put the survival of our community above all else. It reminds me of my town Chicago—A city that values politicians more than movie stars. Are there less than transparent deals taking place? Of course. But, in spite of all of that, it is done with the intention of getting stuff done. Why bother getting stuff done? That moves votes. Votes that can decide an election. Elections that can change the course of history. Do you see how this works in Mordor yet?

The Denizen are a vital life blood of our region. Their abilities to bring past Nation States experience and ideas to the table is what will keep Mordor a dynamic region; one that can compete for the new nations. One that keeps thinking of the next great role play game. A Denizen that generates its own activity.
Aside from government, Mordor can become a region that has businesses within it. Like many regions, Mordor will reach a certain size when Denizen will want to have their own space on the forum that they can control. Where they can create a social gathering point. Where their talents can be used to help others through legal representation or political PR. There is no reason we should stifle this activity. We should embrace the entrepreneurial spirit of the Denizen!

This region that the Denizen is growing into an ever-more vital community will also be a leader in Nation States. With a large number of WA nations, we shall increase our sphere of influence through our military and our diplomatic relations. We shall welcome all of our interregional friends to our community to enjoy in our company and celebrate the successes we have built. Mordor shall value its friends and stand steadfast against its foes. With a number of loyal regions at our sides, Mordor can become a powerful leader.

The very soul of Mordor is absolutely crucial to the future of Mordor. Without is, we are just another region. But, we cannot allow our creed to stand in the way of what needs to be done. The Denizen as well as the elected officials know when it is time to set aside the squabbling for the good of our region.

The past three months—while productive in the areas of recruitment, foreign affairs and flexing military might—have been unstable. Many essential processes and institutions for the region were never established, making our future shaky. How can we go on to achieve great things if our ship has no rudder? We know that by embracing a vision, our leaders will always be able to guide us toward our destination when times get cloudy.

What Must Be Done?

There are certain things that must be accomplished in order for us to reach our destination:

1) We must finish building a stable foundation for our nation. Our constitution is a bare frame. We have to create the procedures that really make this thing run and run efficiently. We need clear election laws that spell out every step for a fair process. We need procedures to safeguard our forum admins. We need a law that explains how our laws are preserved for posterity, so everyone has equal access to the laws to know their rights. Most importantly, we need a judicial system so we know what these laws mean. Many disputes in the last term could have been resolved if we had an authority to interpret law.

2) We need to focus on recruitment. We all know that every region lives and dies by the number of new people they have. We must develop sensible incentives to for everyone to recruit. This must go beyond mandates on our elected officials and as a carrot for those who want to serve in government. We must utilize our Denizen to help, with their understanding that they are going to be rewarded for the hard work they do.

3) We must throw ourselves into the interregional community by joining the Founderless Region Alliance (FRA). We certainly are successful these days in defending regions, all thanks to the leadership of the Sauron. He is our Commander in Chief and also the Arc Chancellor of the FRA. With this level of influence in that organization, we could easily become a major power broker in that organization. The dividends that would pay to Mordor’s reputation is high.

4) We must expand our military. We need further incentives to enlist more nations into our military. Our influence in the FRA will only go so far if our military stays at the same size. Beyond our diplomatic reach, our interregional influence can only be furthered by a giant military.

5) We must harness the talents of the Denizen. We must create the necessary legal framework that allow our Denizen to explore their talents in Mordor. By offering space to the Denizen on the forum, we can expect law firms to pop up, competing newspapers to interview elected officials, PR firms to run political campaigns and new places of social gatherings to open. The possibilities are endless as what our talented Denizen can do.

While the last term was stagnant, that does not have to define us. We have to find it within us to see how this vision benefits all of us. This new term we are embarking on is our fresh start. Let’s start off on this journey by envisioning where we are going. Are we a region that sees promise in a vibrant future that utilizes our most talented Denizen, that commands the interregional community, that provides due process to everyone, while still keeping that little something that makes us Mordor? Or are we going to continue to travel rudderless with only a vague idea of where we are going?

I like to think we know the answer to that question and it has us always looking forward. Always wanting to tackle new problems. Always innovating, which makes us dynamic. We are Mordor and we are the region that works.

With you on everything except FRA membership. We don't need it just yet. And as for Sauron having major influence, we sometimes listen to him.
