Assuming a materialistic universe, then free will is an impossibility, because everything that happens in the universe is a consequence of the laws of physics. |

If free will doesn't exist, we wouldn't be having this conversation, right? |

Or is this conversation governed by some random molecular interactions in our brain cells? |

Well, I don't know if it is random or not. But the point is that human behaviour is at is core, mechanical. The brain is a biological computer. It analyses input, and processes information. It is that process that originates what you call reasoning and decision making, but in the end, the end result of the process depends entirely on the nature of the brain and of the input. If you had to humans, that were exactly copies from each other, and you exposed them to similar stimuli, their responses would always be equal. Unless those theories stating the brain is actually a quantum computer are true, in which case you have to account for the principle of uncertainty and that brings the possibility that the two would occasional behave differently. That difference would however not be caused by free will, just random quantum fluctuations. |

Well yes, but we control the actions we do, they're just influence by our brain. |

And the brain is different from the "I"? What is the "I" then? |

Because there is no part of me that does not exist in the physical world, there is no part of me that cannot be explained by physical laws. Hence if I knew enough about those laws, I could predict the actions of any person or group of people. I don't take this to be a bad thing though, nor do I believe it in someway lessens the human experience. Rather, I think life is even more beautiful because I know that I'm part of a universe governed by laws that can be understood. Instead of making me think that my life is meaningless it proves to me that I can make sense of the world in which I live. |
