Warning: Some of the below may offend people and/or may contain triggers, if you are the sort of person who this may apply to please consider whether you should read what I'm about to write or not.

A quick Q&A for those of you not familiar with the topic: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23403068

The tl;dr is that the government has decided too many people are viewing pornography (both legal and illegal) and that their solution is a series of enforced filters/blocks/etc.

My main issues with the ideas presented:

1. Has anyone in government actually ever worked in IT or dealt with schoolkids that want to get access to porn? I highly doubt that whatever filters/blocks they design will stand up for half an hour before people start to find their ways round them.

2. Filters are notoriously unreliable, to take a quote from the link at the top:

Quote:

Ironically, some people have reported that the "family friendly" filters now required on public wi-fi hotspots stopped them reading news articles about government plans to impose pornography filters.

If they can't even get it right at the moment what makes them think they can get it right when it's forced on everyone? Personally when my ISP ask me I'll be saying I don't want them filtering anything because I'm more confident in my own ability to handle these things than I am in theirs/the governments.

On a related tangent they've also called for tighter control on the types of pornography available (link here) specifically "simulated rape" now I realise just how careful I have to be with this topic and before I go anywhere let me get it out of the way: Rape is bad and should be treated extremely seriously, but the blocking of simulated material is also something I oppose.

At the end of the day I don't believe it is for the government to dictate what can happen in the bedroom between consenting individuals. Some people do find such fantasies to be something they enjoy and as long as everyone involved is consenting (even if the roleplay situation is designed to be not) then I don't think it is for the government to ban it.

Speaking from personal experience there is a woman I used to know who described some of her fantasies which involved non-consent and they were exciting to her and something she enjoyed. She is however an adult and completely capable of seperating fantasy from reality and would never dream of getting involved in something that actually was genuinely non-consentual. So why should she be unable to view or even produce material where everyone involved is consentual simply because someone somewhere might find it offensive and/or be that unable to make the seperation as to consider it real?

I suppose the argument is along the lines of "if you watch this stuff you'll go out and do it for real" which strikes me as much the same as "if you play a violent video game you'll go out and do violent things" and I treat the argument the same way: If you are unable to seperate a fantasy from reality then it doesn't particuarly matter what medium you get it from or even if you come up with it in your own head, you're still going to do it regardless.

So I suppose in summary I'm opposed to the measures the government is proposing and quite frankly they just killed off the last shred of a chance that I'll be voting conservative next time.

Any thoughts/comments, obviously the topic is mainly aimed at those in the UK but I'd also be interested to hear from those abroad (especially if you have any experience of similar filters in your own country.)

I'm concerned primarily with the 'adult content filter'. Say I want to watch an 18+ movie (not necessarily porn) will I be able to view it or first contact my internet provider?

Not to mention that most people aren't want to opt in to view the filters as they know they'll just be monitored closely by the provider/government/police etc.

They really have no argument for doing it, other than 'think of the children' with literally no backing for it.

This actually made me think of another point in regards to the simulated topic, exactly where will they be drawing the line? Will it now be illegal to watch crime dramas that cover the topic? Will movies that feature scenes like that (the movie Derailed is one that springs to mind simply as it does have a scene however it is if I remember correctly one short scene with minimal if any nudity that is fairly integral to the movie as a whole) suddenly be banned from being viewed online? Or does it have to be "believable" that what you see is an actual event taking place, in which case you get into another massive grey area.

Like Vlad, I seriously doubt that any filter the Gov. wants to impose could hold back determined school children.

I also follow the line that people should make the choice of what they want to see in the first place, not the Government automatically deciding want is inappropriate and the people having to opt in to see it.
