Essentially, the whole federal Government is going into shutdown. The Legislature stops sitting, the state-owned Smithsonian Museums all close and all apparatus of the State (FBI, NSA, CIA, Armed Forces) just cease to function. The whole Federation literally stops doing stuff.

Alright, lets get a bit better explanation on the ground: Obama care sucks, but he refuses to not let it pass. Congress wants to make a bill to increase the amount of debt the country can has, and not put Obama Care on at the end. Obama won't allow them to pass this, unless Obama care is added on. Since they cannot raise the amount of debt they have, they must go into a shut down. This means that all non-essential government funded agencies and stuff will be shut down. This means museums, monuments, politicians, and a bunch of other guys do not get paid and sit around until Obama and Congress come to an agreement. Essential things, such as the military, FBI, traffic workers, and firemen do still continue running on a sort of back up budget sort of thing. Obama really wants Obama care to pass, so it will be his mark on the world. Instead, he will be remembered as the idiot who caused the government to shut down. |

This isn't Obama's doing, it's because Congress and the Senate can't agree on funding. Obamacare has flaws but it's better than our current health care plan. We need to make cuts and our healthcare is already cut enough. |

No. A government shutdown means that the federal government hasn't gotten any new money to run once the fiscal year expires or if the continuing resolution stops (the fiscal year expired). When that happens, payments to veterans are delayed, troops don't get paid, passport processing stops, national parks close, Air traffic control workers are reduced, hundreds of thousands of "non-essential" personnel can not work. If it goes on long enough it can damage the US economy. |

Lets get an even better, more accurate explanation of what has happened on the ground: The Affordable Healthcare Act is already law, has been for years. The Affordable Healthcare Act has even been brought before the Supreme Court and the court upheld its existence. The House Republicans have since held something like 43 votes to repeal "Obamacare" and have failed each time. Now it is their wish to bypass Congressional procedure, the Supreme Court, and the will of the people by forcing the rest of the Congress to defund the Affordable Healthcare Act or else they will shut down the government. Like Dhaka said, it is the end of the fiscal year and the continuing resolutions that continued to fund the government without a budget have expired as well. This is the first time the government has been shut down in like 17 years. And as others have mentioned government employees have been furloughed. I think the number is over 700,000. Of course since the start of the shutdown several resolutions have been passed in order to keep things like the national park service open and for active service people to get paid. This is not the debt ceiling discussion which I think you've confused with what is happening. That is a whole separate debate. This is simply funding the government for the next fiscal year. The blame does not fall on the President as this is the job of the Congress. The President is not refusing to let "Obamacare" fail because it is already law. It is members of the Tea Party Caucus who are refusing to fund the federal government, and for the moment Congressional Republicans are along for the ride. They want to force the failure of an Act before its provisions have fully kicked in. The Republicans will only vote to fund the government if it includes a measure to defund the Affordable Healthcare Act. The Affordable Healthcare Act does not suck. If it did, the President would not have been elected twice while running primarily on his healthcare platform. I get there is a vocal minority of people that vehemently oppose these changes to American healthcare, but we all agree that something needs to be done. "Obamacare" is law and it will continue to be so even though the government shut down. Its time that certain politicians stopped being so petty and accept that they have lost this battle. Fund the government, its that simple. No partisan strings attached. This isn't about healthcare, this isn't about ideology, this is about governing. |

according to many polls even most republicans are fine with Obamacare so the opposition is futile. it is the loud minority of extreme right wing republicans who think its going to dent the economy. ironically it has been predicted that if the current state goes on for 3-4 weeks, it might reduce the economical growth of USA from 3% to 1.5% this year. having good healthcare secures economical growth in the future. if people are sick constantly, they can't work. if people can't work, the economy stops working. I can't understand how people dont get this... |

as far as I was informed, the fiscal cliff was more or less a made-up crisis (by the republicans) that was no danger to USA at all. let Mr. Burns explain it to you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c91usT4P1u0 |

I looked this up on wikipedia just for you: "In the United States, the fiscal cliff was a simultaneous increase in tax rates and decrease of government spending through sequestration that would have occurred January 2013 through a series of previously enacted laws. The deficit—the amount by which government spending exceeds its revenue—was projected to be reduced by roughly half in 2013. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) had estimated that the fiscal cliff would have likely led to a mild recession with higher unemployment in 2013, followed by strengthening in the labor market with increased economic growth.[1] Instead, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA) largely eliminated the revenue side of the fiscal cliff by implementing a higher deficit and a smaller increase compared to the previously enacted laws. Adjustments to spending were expected to be resolved in early 2013. Intense debate and media coverage about the fiscal cliff drew widespread public attention during the end of 2012 because of its projected short-term fiscal and economic impact." |
