The logboat splashed up to the edge of the river. Logalog Durry set down his paddle where his seat had been. He then leapt ashore so as to avoid the water. Durry was not a big fan of the water. He loved traveling on it, but not being in it. Once ashore Durry began doling out commands. "Let's get us a camp ready." He sighed contentedly as he watch the other shrews carrying out his orders. He could not however stand around while others were doing work. He strode out into the woods to look for signs of recent habitation, and to gather some wood for the cook fires.

Silently he looked for signs. There was a few broken twigs about fifty yards away from the camp site. He put his left paw on his rapier in case there was trouble.

The River Moss was healthy with chill waters flooding in from the spring thaw. Pike and perch skimmed the crystal surface, fan-like fins zipping by as they hunted for small prey in the tumultuous depths. Somewhere a kingfisher announced its challenge to the world, he was swiftly answered and the kaleidoscopic birds chirped madly until they fluttered off into the arboreal vastness that was Mossflower Woodlands.

The swollen River Moss made pleasant burbling noises as it chuckled against the smooth pebbles along its shore. And by its side, next to a half-bent willow whose fronds touched the water’s surface as though in prayer, sat a very large, very evil-looking rat.

Covered in a patchwork of grays with twisted whiskers and dark, beady eyes, even sitting he managed to be intimidating, staring at the water as he was. He just sat there, pink-fleshed footpaws touching the moist mud of the river’s bank. Suddenly one of his rounded ears cocked, and in an instant he was beset upon by a young squirrelmaid who leapt upon his back and shoulders without fear, battering him with a small bundle of straw-like plant. Mercilessly she wailed upon his unprotected head, yelling threats as she did so. “Waha! Gotcher now, biggabeastie! Take that n’ that n’ that n’ that! Can’t’cher get Tika off? Sillybeast! Wahaha!” Without rest she whipped the massive rat with her bundle, leaving no part of him unstruck (that she could reach).

The rat seemed to just simply endure it, he stood calmly at first, but then he caught onto the game and immediately fell to all fours and bucked about as though trying to rid himself of the tiny terror.

But the squirrelmaid just giggled and screamed with delight, clinging to the rat’s scruffy fur tightly as her bushy tail waved to help balance her against his bucking and jumping.

But the rat didn’t realize he was bucking a slow, meandering path towards the Guosim camp, putting up quite a ruckus in the process with the squirrel’s excited screams and intermingled laughter.

Durry stood up from examining the bent twigs. He heard something that sounded like crashing through the bush. He drew his rapier and saw the biggest rat he'd ever seen. Attached was a squirrelbabe. "Not on my watch nosirree." he thought to himself.

Durry swallowed nervously. He had fought some bad beasts before, but never a rat this size. He amped himself up quickly by reminding himself that he was the LOGALOG of the GUOSIM. He could not stand idly by while an innocent squirrel was being attacked by vermin.

Durry steeled himself and said " Unhand that squirrel, RAT!" He raised the sword in challenge.

The rat was caught off-guard by the sound of a sudden voice, brazen with purpose. He froze, going suddenly rigid as his dark eyes settled upon the shrew’s form several paces away in the underbrush.

The young squirrelmaid immediately started to complain. “’Ey…why you no jumpajump? Tika not done yet with rideygame!” Angrily she bopped the rat twice upon his wide head with her hay bundle as she sat squarely upon his shoulders. Slowly she followed his steady gaze to the shrew that stood bristling nearby, with sword at ready. The tiny squirrel narrowed her eyes almost forebodingly and stood and posed with all the dexterity of a tree-climber. The rat didn’t budge beneath her, a steady oak beneath the squirrelbabe as one of her small paws planted itself to the top of his skull. She pointed her hay bundle at the shrew in what she felt was a threatening fashion, doing her best to scowl and seem dangerous. “You no wave your pointy-stick at us, spikeyhead! Go ‘way!” Her face became the picture of posh indignation as she gave her fully logical explanation. “Only Tika an’ Raz allowed t’play, so there!”

Boldly she stuck her tongue out at the shrew as the rat stood solidly beneath her. He never seemed to move, only blink as he kept his eyes thoroughly focused on the Log-a-Log’s form. He had the look of a warrior and could be dangerous.

But the rat didn’t move, instead he remained as still as a living statue; even his breathing seemed an invisible motion.

Durry was caught off guard by the squirrel's comment. He didn't see any sign of hurt on the babe. His suspision was still aroused. He wondered why a rat would be carting around a squirrel. He decided to ask.

" Why do have this squirrel with you? Speak up you!"

Durry's rapier was still poised to strike at any moment. His eyes stayed focused on the rat and the small squirrel babe perched on his shoulders. He was hoping that some of his shrews had heard the noise these two were making. He did not fancy facing this gargantuan rat by himself.

“Huh! Shows ‘ow much YOU knows!” The squirrelmaid snorted as she poised her handpaws upon her hips. “Raz no talkytalk! Him got ‘is throat hurted longtime ‘go!” This statement was supported by the nasty gray-pink scar which trailed across the massive rat’s neck. It hugged his throat, from ear to ear, gnarled with scar tissue and devoid of fur. It suited his gruff, unkempt appearance. “ ‘Sides! He wuddn’t talk t’no spikeyheaded, dozypawed, smartywhiskered-angrymouse anyways!” She added cheekily as she stuck a thumb to her nose, lifted it unceremoniously in provocation and wiggled her fingers at the Guosim.

Nobeast heard it, but Raz actually chuckled.

Durry's blood was rising. Who did this impudent little squirrel think she was? Durry was LOGALOG of the most ferocious band of shrews in Mossflower and beyond. He could have a score of them at his side in no time and this little maid was making fun of him? Still he could not think of hurting an innocent babe. He lowered his rapier, but kept it drawn just in case. He would invite the two beasts to come to the shrew camp and see if he could make some sense of this odd pairing. Also there would be a retinue of shrews in case the rat turned out to be a villain like Durry suspected.

"okay there you little rip. Why don't you and your rat friend come make camp with a few of my friends and have some dinner." He stepped to the side and indicated that they should go first. He still didn't trust the rat and wanted to make sure he didn't have his back to him.
