I think I would have much preferred that ending in the movie. The current one seemed off. |

Good to know elite, now I know that I don't EVER want to read this book! Spoiler: click to toggle And, yes, G, CT is the reason to watch! Aww Mary, you so don't want to know what I was thinking of Savannah when John got her "Dear John" letter! You must remember, though, that John is the character I related to and not Savannah. I am sure your situation was very different, though, from this book. I'm sure your guy wasn't off fighting at the time. You can't hold off breaking up with somebody just because they are stationed far away from you. It's not like there are many chances for face-to-face in a long-distance relationship. For me, though, having nursed the wounds of friends who have received those letters, I never understood how anybody could send such a letter to a person during a wartime situation — to someone who was off living in the hell of war. From my experience, when you are away from your loved ones, its the thought of your loved ones that usually get you through such times. |

Oh yes Vikks - it was a harsh look at the reality I must have made it for my bf at the time. Granted, I had my own reasons for not making that particular relationship work. But it did give me a glimpse as to how bad it must have been for him. Not exactly my proudest moment. Couldn't HATE Savannah for making that decision (although my sympathy didn't last too long since she actually LOVED John). |

I totally didn't get that, Spoiler: click to toggle My sister says it's a good book, the focus is not so much on the "love" story as it is on the guy's military life, but I'm still not so sure that I want to read it. Edited by Vikks14, Feb 14 2010, 10:39 PM.

Here's something interesting - I downloaded the Dear John screenplay (it was free at the Sony E-book store) and I read the ending. The ending of the screenplay mirrors the book. I'm wondering if the test audience didn't like the ending (like I didn't in the book) and they scrambled to make a different ending. Maybe that's why it seemed rushed and seemed off in the movie..... As for your question Vikks Spoiler: click to toggle |

Ugh elite, I just don't think I can get into that kind of story. You know, I've read a few Nicholas Sparks books that I've liked, but I am always wary of his stories because I think he likes doing this to his readers, get them drawn in and then...WHAM! I only read the NS books that my sister recommends to me, since she knows what I will, and what I won't, enjoy. And what you said makes sense, I bet the test audience didn't like the original screenplay so they rushed to change it. |

I've read all of his books and he does have a habit of creating unhappy endings. When his books do end up with main people still alive and happy, I always look to make sure NS is the author! |

LOL...I don't think I've read one of those yet! just in case... Spoiler: click to toggle I think I may read the autobiographical one about him and his brother because I am pretty sure nobody dies in that one! He's a great author, btw, I just hate sad endings—especially when they take me by surprise. |

Books with happy endings - The Lucky One, The Choice, and The Wedding. I believe The Rescue, The Guardian and A Bend in the Road also end well but I can't remember those books too well. His latest book The Last Song, well the ending is not surprising but it was an ok book. They only thing that turned me off was that the movie was made (or was being made) before he even wrote the book and that when he wrote it, he had Miley Cyrus in mind to play the main character. Really? Miley Cyrus? It gave me the impression that he now only writes books to make them into movies....I didn't like that. The worst movie ever that was made from a NS book was Message in a Bottle. The movie was beyond horrible. It did not do the book justice. |

I loved A Walk To Remember! (The movie, that is. It's in my movie collection so I do watch it over and over!) I liked the book too, but I saw the movie first. If I remember correctly, now, The Wedding is a loose sequel to The Notebook right? I liked The Notebook, but didn't read The Wedding because I figured something bad must happen at the end, since it wraps up the whole story! But if you say it didn't, maybe I'll pick it up. I made the mistake of reading At First Sight. I didn't know it was a sequel (to True Believer). And now that I know how it all ends, I don't have the incentive to read True Believer. |

Oh! And Message in a Bottle totally took me by surprise. I believe I yelled at my sister, said Why didn't you warn me!?! (She has all of his books.) That's when she decided I can only read NS books personally recommended by her. My sister hated the movie too, elite, all the way down to the casting I think. So I never bothered to watch it. |

We watched Valentine's Day on V-day. It was cute! Predictable, but cute. Definitely a fluff film. |
