" It's been denied, but I can't help see the parallels of the story to WWII. "
--I never would have thought that. I don't think I'm thinking of the book deep enough though to see that. Did people think it paralleled WWII? Did Tolkien deny that it did?

Tolkien wrote the second volume of the book around the time that he was a pilot in WWII...if I remember correctly. And the earlier writings were thought to be inspired by WWI

Sauron as Hitler? Different nations coming together to defeat the one great evil. Then we have those that didn't want to be a part of the war - who wanted to continue living in their worlds.

Some even say that the appearance of the Eagles at the end of the fight represented the US entering the war.

Magic was supposed to represent science, and even the nuclear bomb.

I took a course at UC Berkely that discussed the various parallels which was really very interesting.
But yeah - Tolkien has denied that it represented WWII.

Overall, I think the book touches upon basic human nature. There's always been war, greed, love, goodness, etc.

Oh yeah, I could totally see that. The series does have a lot of symbolism in it, and given when it was written, I could see it paralleled to WWII.

That class sounds like it was cool.

I know it's true that Tolkien denied the parallels to WWII and his mythology, but I have to wonder...what artist doesn't react to influences around them?? The comparisons are too easy to be denied.

Yeah, after Mary mentioned that to me, I could totally see several parallels between Tolkien's artistic work, and the culture that was occurring around the time he worked.

That's what I think too. It may not be intentionally based on the war, but the times and his opinions MUST have influenced his writing in some way or another.

Luckie - you made it through the stuff with Bombadil, so you'll definitely make it through the council.

It's been a long time since I read any part of the series and seeing where you are is kinda making me want to start again. I know there are lots of things I've forgotten (or have been superseded by what's in the movies).

I like it. I think I will like the next two books better, because I know there will be more action, although I know I will want to rush through the Frodo & Sam parts to get back to Aragorn & friends. When I was younger, I used to love reading the classics -- Jane Eyre & Count of Monte Cristo (probably my 2 fav classics) and even longer stuff: Thomas Hardy, etc. But I find these days that I'm impatient for the story to get going, maybe because of the stacks of things to-be-read. I need to remind myself to slow down & enjoy it!

I picture the characters from the movies while I'm reading, which is interesting. I almost never bother to read the book if I've already seen the film. So far, the mines have been the most interesting part of this book. Aragorn is my favorite (no surprise there), but I like Boromir more than I thought I would -- he's not all bad or all good -- physically strong, and brave, but philisophically misguided. I've always liked Merry and Pippin. I think they would be cool to hang with, if I ever made it to the Shire ;-)
