I'm a little over 100 pages in. Max was just introduced. Papa and Liesel's relationship is just perfect. It warms my heart.

I had a day to sit on this book and I went back and read your posts.

I, too, thought that she ended up with Max. Rudy...poor Rudy. What a bright, shining light he was. I love his friendship/love with Liesel. They are such a great pair. I adore Hans. He's just such a goodhearted person. His relationship with Liesel was beautiful. Sad that he never had that with his "real" children. His accordion is such a symbolic piece in this story, huh? It brings out the hope, that Hans always had. Broke my heart when he went to war the second time and Rosa just held his accordion. I loved Isla helping Liesel "steal" her books. The bombing and hiding scenes were so raw and scary. Part of me felt like I was there in the basement with them. Wanting to hear Liesel read her books.

Death's point of view was great too. Knowing Rudy was going to die made it even more painful to read his parts in the book.

This book is one of my top 10 favorite books ever!

Finally finished it. It was definitely a great book but so sad. The premise was hard for me to read and I had a hard time enjoying the light hearted moments because the foundation was so scary and sad. I too saw Liesel with Max in the end. I didn't cry while reading but when the bombing happened I was close to tears. When Liesel kissed Rudy, oy! And seeing her mama and papa? What a horrible thing to go through at that age.

The moments that stood out the most to me where the acts of kindness that Hans, Liesel and Rudy tried to offer to the Jews as they were marching. When Hans handed out the bread I was terrified that he would be killed right on the spot but I was so proud of him for standing up for what he believed in even if it meant punishment.

I also am a firm believer in parents modeling behavior and that rang true for me when Liesel extended the same act of kindness. It may have been because of Max and/or just her personality itself but I think Hans was such a great model for her that it gave her the strength to do something exactly like he did.

Overall it was a good book even though it was a bit too serious for me. :) I guess there's a reason I stick with the love stories. I usually get a happy ending! lol

Read this book last week and loved it!! It was such a fantastic book. So sad at times but I appreciated the humor he would put in it. I cried at the end when Liesel found Rudy's, Hans' and Rosa's bodies. What a heartbreaking scene.

And I have to agree with everyone else, I too assume she ended up marrying Max. Why else wouldn't he be part of the "lit like lanterns" group??
