Watch Modern Family Season 4 Episode 14

Previously on Modern Family Season 4 Episode 13 "Fulgencio", Gloria's mom, Pilar, and sister Sonia have made the voyage from Colombia, and they come bearing traditions, baby names and a whole lot of family baggage. Meanwhile, no one seems to have confidence that Phil will be able to help with the kids' problems, but there just might be a method to his madness. And Lily has picked up some bad habits, so Mitchell and Cameron try their hardest to mind their Ps and Qs to set a good example for her.

On this week's Episode title "A Slight at the Opera", Cameron is putting on the school production of "Phantom of the Opera," but when their star falls ill, Manny pulls all the stops to land the lead -- even if that means going against Luke. Meanwhile, Jay teaches Phil to golf and they wind up in a golf-off with Pepper and Mitch; Gloria takes Alex along on errands which include a visit to a psychic; and Claire's adventures in babysitting Joe and Lily become a comedy of errors.

Modern Family is an American comedy series created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan that debuted on ABC on September 23, 2009. Presented in mockumentary style, the fictional characters frequently talk directly into the camera. It tells of Jay Pritchett, his second wife and step son as well as his two children—one of whom is homosexual—and their families. Lloyd and Levitan conceived the series while sharing stories of their own "modern families".

The series premiered to critical acclaim and was watched by 12.6 million viewers. Early on, it was named as a key contender for the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards. Soon after, on October 8, 2009, the series was picked up for a full season. The series has received positive reviews from critics and received several award nominations. The series has won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series twice so far, for Eric Stonestreet and Ty Burrell, as well as the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Julie Bowen. It also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

The syndication rights to the show have also been sold to USA Network and 10 Fox affiliates for a fall 2013 premiere. The success of the show has also led it to being the sixteenth-highest revenue-generating show for 2010, earning $1.6 million an episode. Brian Lowry, of Variety, sums up the show in regards to the airing of the pilot episode: "Flitting among three storylines, it's smart, nimble and best of all, funny, while actually making a point about the evolving nature of what constitutes 'family.'"

As Lloyd and Levitan retold stories about their families, it occurred to them that that could be the basis for a show. They started working on the idea of a family being observed in a mockumentary style show. They later decided it could be a show about three families and their experiences, and originally called My American Family. The creators pitched it to three of the four major networks. (They did not pitch it to Fox because of issues Lloyd had with the network over Back to You.) CBS, not ready to use the single-camera style of filming nor ready to make another large commitment, rejected the series (Welcome to The Captain and Worst Week were single-camera sitcoms that recently aired on CBS but both lasted one season). NBC, already having two shows with a mockumentary format — The Office and Parks and Recreation — decided against accepting the show before the success of the other two series decreased. ABC accepted the series and picked it up for a full season.
