"When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat.""
|
The Council had made their decision. Auduin's sister would be spared. They handed down their verdict as if there was doubt it would ever go another way. Auduin himself had seen to its passing with early morning visits to whoever he thought wavered in their good sense. The Council was the Council, but the Alpha was the Alpha. And Kit was Auduin's sister. He would like to think that even had he not been in the position he was, he would have fought for her. Died for her. Sibling rivalry was always a bitch. More so where power and government were involved. Auduin had overstepped, one time to many it seemed. He had driven his sister away. If he didn't rectify this error... Well... He couldn't think about it. His twin had left, and he had only himself to blame. How many days had he stayed awake, how many hunts had he stayed behind on? He would have gone after her himself, were it not for the elders' prodding. "You must stay," they said. "Askival needs the blood of Raghnall and Zara". Askival did need their blood. But Auduin was only half of that, and not enough. He didn't want to be enough. Not at the exclusion of his sister. Auduin remembered his father's stories about the trials and tribulations of establishing the pack from the chaotic conditions he had found it in. In every instance of the story, Raghnall would emphasize how much Zara had helped, at every step. How he couldn't have brought the pack together alone. How external threats would have broken even him. Auduin needed Kit in a very similar way. They were all Pack. All family. But not like Kit. They had not been born with him. They had not shared every memory, every experience, from womb to leadership. Auduin made his decision. He would go, tonight. He gathered what he would need for the trip, and called the Council together. As he walked to the meeting place, something caught his eye. He stopped short in his determined pace, pivoting on his heel to face what some considered a damn near sacred artifact. A spear, belonging to his mother. His father worked metals, and while Mother always preferred magic in combat, every wolf needed some good steel. On the intricately carved wooden stand lay the marvelous weapon. Flame-bladed steel head, a beautifully shaped wolf's head where the metal met wood, and a tuft of his father's fur just below. The scent alone was comforting and emboldening. Auduin reached out a hand, and the weapon seemed to snap up into his grip. He tilted his head at this development, but settled into a smile. Some of Mother's magic, no doubt. In any case, it seemed to like him, so he was good with it. "Alpha, I must-" "-I- must find my sister. I did not call you here to ask permission. I called you here to tell you what is going to happen. Hold the city until I return with Kit." "What if there's a usurper in your absence?" "I'll skin the coward alive and mount his head by the gates when I return." Auduin turned to leave the chamber. "That spear! Surely you-" "I'm taking it. It's a weapon, not an ornament. It's time it served it's purpose again." He heard bickering after he left, but he could care less. He was doing this for his Pack. His True Pack. "I'm coming, Kit."
