RETIRED

Name: Royce LeBeau
Race: Barovian
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Abilities: Incende, Borea, Arcana

Appearance:
Royce stands at 5'11", built long and lean but very well built. He physically trains nearly every day, and the effort he puts in shows in every muscle. His dark brown hair is cut short, both because of his position in the military and because it's waviness makes it hard to handle at any length. His face usually has a bit of a shadow, even early in the morning. On his left arm, a white tattoo of what appears to be clockwork snowflakes runs from his elbow to his wrist, wrapping around his entire forearm. On his right arm, silver chains and red flames run in a circular pattern in the same place. On the tops of both his hands, from the wrist to the fingertips, is what appears to be a star map in the style of a spider web with a purple hue. Each tattoo glows when it's particular spell is used, the chains being connected to Incende, the snowflakes to Borea, and the web to Arcana.

Apparel:
While he is always in his colors, Dark Blue with Black trim, his dress may vary. Usually he wears his Gambeson, with his city's crest on the chest, back, and arms. Other times he has no armor at all, especially when he is gathering intel in plain clothes, which he does enjoy doing. In battle, he may wear some light mail over the gambeson, but he always retains his maneuverability. If he is on a ship, he probably doesn't even have a shirt on, having gotten caught on random protrusions many, many times.
Around his belt he carries a 9 section chain whip, his primary weapon when he has the space to utilize it. He usually carries small knives concealed on his person in varying places, but he always has a scramasax in each boot. It should also be noted that he carries a deck of 39 Tarot cards. Not much bigger than regular playing cards, they seem to have an odd allure to them.

History:
The Barovian race are not fans of magic. This is not a secret, but for those with the Gift of the Magus that live among them it is a harsh reality. To escape execution, many resort to self exhile. Because the gifts of the arcanium tend to flow down family bloodlines, this leads many families to seek other places to live. The LeBeau family is one such family. Sort of.

There will always be wanderers, but some take to it more than the average bum. In fact, some make decent livings being bums, and sometimes these people are called gypsies. The LeBeaus, who had obviously created the name from thin air to veil whoever they were before, were third or fourth generation exiles. I say were, because they will all die shortly. Anyway, The LeBeaus. They were gypsies. Yes.

Being gypsies, they rambled and rolled and stole and tricked, but most of all, they entertained. Also killed people. Right. The assassin thing. Should probably mention that at some point, yes? Well now is that point. You would think there wouldn't be much t say, but killing people is actually pretty interesting. The way it worked was that the family would travel from city to city, usually servicing the Sicinese, Royce's father having been rumored to have done some work for certain members of the pantheon. but rumors are rumors, his mother was supposed to have killed a large warrior of over 300 pounds with a barrette. Not a fancy assassin-y one, either. Just a barrette.

Back to the point, this was the environment Royce was raised in. He was born in the wagon of a travelling show, his mama used to dance for the money they'd throw. Papa would do whatever he could; Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good. No, wait. That was Cher. Anyway, his gifts were encouraged from a young age, and the training... oh, the training. Hard, long, and not at all sexual, you pervert. Although his traveling caravan did have some good looking ladies in it, Royce was never attracted to first cousins. That is the problem with always being around family, isn't it?

Incest issues aside, one day when Royce was very, very teenagery and acting like a bitch (i.e., storming off and skipping stones angrily at a pond for some fight with his mother) his entire caravan was cleared out. When he returned, only his father remained. It was quite a site... Someone had completely annihilated his entire family. Mother, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc... It was like the life had been sucked out of them. Well, some of them. Others were ripped to shreds, still others were charred remains.

Apparently, his father figured that it was his fault. Or had been told so, perhaps. Anyway, he did himself in before Royce could get to him. So, as it happened, the young mage was on his own at age 14. To be fair, he could take care of himself pretty well. After all, he could sing, dance, play 4 instruments, throw a spell or two around, fight like hell (and make it look pretty), play a mean game of cards (aka cheat his ass off), read fortunes in a variety of ways, etc. The only thing he was able to salvage from the wreckage (all the valuables had been taken) was his great-grandmothers tarot cards.

He made his way from city to city, getting deeper and deeper into the underworld. He stayed away from any assassination contracts, and even had to change his name because of a few close calls. That's right, his name isn't Royce, and it isn't LeBeau. He really is male, though.

Eventually he made his way to Strathmoor, and what a perfect fit it was. Until he ended up in trouble with the guards. Well, until one day they actually caught his slippery ass, he was in trouble from the start. No one likes stowaways, apparently. He was given an ultimatum (ha!) at the age of 17: Prison or the Navy. He chose prison. The guard bumped him over the head and he woke up in uniform on a ship. Under the water.

A good Captain was what he needed, and it's what he got. When he surfaced in six months, he had an education, a strong work ethic, and a patriotic dedication to Srathmoor and its ruling family. He served fiercely, quickly earning a spot on a ship as a boarding party/shore party member. His prowess in intelligence gathering (he was sometimes called the "Spectre" because of his ability to seemingly disappear. Also the magic and the cards he always played with) and combat got him recognition and rank. He was even able to see a Strath once. A low ranking family member, a cousin of a uncle or something, but he was excited nonetheless.

Neat. I like it. I don't take him seriously, because you didn't write him seriously, and that's new for you. I hope it works out well in context.

Obviously, you'd need to clean a couple of things up to get Renowned, but all in all you have the makings of a strong character. I think you need to test him to make sure that he works the way that you want him to. He's unique, and he can be really complex (or simple) if you want him to be. Trauma like running from the law all of his life, death of his (entire) family, and being beaten over the head by the military are either going to make this fellow inert, or they're going to make him one crazy son of a gun. There aren't a lot of bars holding him back, and those bars are just what the military taught him. It would be hellish to see him let loose without those people to hold his chain.

Trained killer. Trained smuggler. Trained magician. Trained politician. Trained counterfeiter. Knowledgeable in mathematics, herbology (making that Doctor Good and other tonics/medicines), global mannerisms, probably fluent in many languages... He could do whatever he wants.

You've written a big check. Don't let it bounce. I'll be very impressed if you make this work. But above all of that, the character needs to be believable. He's human. He's been traumatized many times. He's more than a little broken (and I don't mean crazy). That's going to be the hardest part is playing the broken bits right. No amount of book learning can glean or replace a single shattering experience and the lifetime of differentiation that is causes in a person.
