Name: Ismay Perry (Nlani) Race: Barovian (Human) Gender: She will tell you a million times over how stupid this question is instead of actually answering it. If she seems feminine, she is feminine. Oppositely, if she seems masculine, she is masculine. It depends on who is looking at her and at what time. She's not hung up on pronouns or whatever you wish to refer to her as. Age: Eighteen Abilities: ![]() Appearance Nlani is a girl of small stature and small features, everything from her crown to her toes suggest that of feminine quality, dainty and delicate in nature. She retains pixie-like features, with a face that never smiles and eyes that rarely glimmer with life. Her body is built for nimble movements and for sinking deep into crowds without being noticed, making it all the easier to be someone who can't easily be remembered, unless one has taken the time to try to notice her. She is a speckled girl, with light spots covering most of her face, shoulders, chest, back, legs, and even thighs. That mixed with her darker shade of hair and lighter azure eyes makes for a rather interesting person to regard, though don't let her catch you gazing at her too long. (Closest Visual Representation: Click here) Clothing and Attire If clothes were not a required social constraint, she wouldn't wear them. Freedom is beyond the flesh, is what she will tell you. That being said, attire isn't something she pays close attention to. She prefers things with no flash or glamor, and with lots of room to wiggle about and move. Often, though, due to her mother's insistence, you will catch Nlani in very plain dresses, though with no shoes. Naked feet is something she can get away with quite easily and she takes advantage of it to the fullest degree. Of course, it's left her feet rather beaten and weathered, which doesn't bother her in the slightest. She likes to think of such things as being the “beauty of experience and use.” If not for her mother's nagging, she would prefer to wear boy clothes, but for now she keeps herself constrained to the more rudimentary, seeing as it falls in line with her preferences. Personality In a word, eclectic. That being said, you won't ever really know what you're going to get out of Nlani when you meet her. In fact, the first thing you will ever learn about her is a lie. Many call her Nlani, but those who have known her throughout her life call her Ismay, and it isn't wise to address her this way if you are a stranger. She has a violent reaction to all things that cement the mortal aspects of her. There are a great deal of things that Nlani does not agree with, and that she should accept that she is human is one of those things. Nlani is by no means a traditional girl, which causes her to be a bit of a headache to those who have had to raise her since birth. That is not to say that she is a horrible, bratty child, but rather that she is a girl that struggles with a lot of things that don't exactly feel right. She is afflicted with a keen and unnatural sense of wanderlust, and has a habit of dreaming of things much bigger than her, this body, and this world. Her desires often lead her to wanting to be something more than the person she was born to be, and often struggles with how uncomfortable it is to be who she is. Her psychic abilities only seem to amplify this problem and encourage her beliefs that she is something more cerebral encased in a tomb of sinew and bone. Though she understands the history that led to the Barovian's natural distrust of magic, she feels differently than most people do. And while she hides her abilities for her parents' sake, she is by no means ashamed of them. She believes them to be a blessing, something that only seems to confirm this wrongness she experiences by being merely human, and strives to morph and grow with her powers. Nlani has difficulty connecting with others, considering how hard it is to hide her free spirit from them. If she does know people, her ties with them are merely shallow, and it is likely that if you asked them to describe things about her, they wouldn't craft something with depth. She tends to be regarded as a person who just exists; someone who just weaves in and out of the environments she's in, sometimes noticed, often not. Though none of this speaks of a lack of desire to be amongst people, or to not develop something deeper with them. Nlani is by no means arrogant, or a narcissist, but rather a person with a lot of what others would perceive as wrong ideas. She longs for deeper connections with people – to fall in love, to care for deeply, to experience joy in the company of others – but it is difficult when she is forced to live in facade, distinctly uncomfortable and uncertain. She dislikes secrets and having to hide most of what she thinks, feels, and experiences, but has no choice but to. She harbors no ill will toward humans, or even her parents who are often very frustrated with her behavior. In fact, she has a very deep fondness for what and who she observes and meets: a sort of curious affection seen by those who are very interested in what they see and experience. Her expansive mind is a source of natural curiosity, something she feeds like a compulsive addiction, whether it be through casual contact with a person she doesn't know, or through observation of natural phenomenon in her environment. Nlani is a bit of an enigma; a human that doesn't feel quite so, and a creature that desires to break free of flesh and bone – to expand ever higher and higher into something all encompassing and celestial. History If you had asked Mr. and Mrs. Perry what they were expecting when they had given birth to their first child, they would have never described the person she turned out to be. There had been many expectations; a child of demure and sweet disposition, who would perhaps go on to marry a man that would work the fields, and repeat the progression of life anew, just like their parents had, and as many generations before them had. They would never be able to tell you when they began to notice Ismay's peculiar nature, but there had always been clues. When she learned to walk, she would try to fly; when she began to talk, she would ask a never-ending line of questions. These were things that they thought, and hoped, she would grow out of as she matured in age, but her eccentricities only seemed to mature and develop with her as time went on. By no means would she be considered the 'proper' daughter of a blacksmith and his wife. She did not take interest in the things that they would casually push her to, and took to often wandering in the fields until ungodly hours, or daydream until her body could no longer afford to function without sleep. Ismay always stated weird things, like how her skin felt itchy because something was moving within her, or that it sometimes felt like her mind was pulling her from her body if she thought hard enough about being somewhere else. They were concerned, as any proper parents would be, but were at a loss of what could possibly be done to remedy the situation. At the age of ten, they were almost certain that what could have been considered a “normal” life would have been impossible for Ismay. At first, they hadn't really noticed it; they were just subtle things that could have been easily written off as unnatural oddities, or overactive imagination. She would often report hearing voices that clearly were not there, and her mother and father were not one to believe such stories told by a girl who had a penchant for tall tales. It wasn't until Ismay began to react to questions or statements that the two hadn't brought to voice that they began to worry. Eventually it evolved in her ability to move things without ever touching them, and the Perrys understood implicitly that their daughter had been cursed with powers that would most assuredly lead to her death. The conversation with their daughter was a difficult one. Mostly it involved informing her of the harsh circumstances that the Barovian race had endured under the influence of magic-users, and how such abilities were discouraged and were best kept suppressed. It was in her best interest, Ismay was informed, that because they loved her so and never wished harm upon her that it was best she pretend these powers did not exist. Of course, parental authority was never enough for such an inquisitive and rebellious child, and soon after came the many “whys” and the “hows” that her parents could not rightfully answer. However, after hours and hours of conversation, which left her father irritated and her mother in tears, Ismay promised that she would never speak of these powers to anyone. She could not assure them that she would grow to disdain these abilities and, as time passed, it became impossible for her to. Time progressed, and Ismay continued to practice her abilities in secret; often toppling over horseshoes when her father wasn't watching, or listening to a person's thoughts as they stared off into nothing. In fact, with a lifetime of never feeling comfortable in her own skin, the natural use of her powers was the most comforting thing in the world. They were a part of her that she simply could not ignore, neither did she want to, and were like a connection to her more true self, the true self that she named Nlani. That wasn't to say that she did not attempt to do the activities that her parents pushed her to do: these hobbies and interests meant to push her toward what would have been deemed 'normal' behavior. Her effort was never lackluster, but she was quick to give up on these ventures, before returning to do what pleased her most. Eventually, her parents just began to accept that there wasn't a thing they could do to push her in a direction they approved of, though their displeasure was evident. They were grateful, in the very least, that their daughter was discreet, like she had promised she would be, but it still never slaked their longing for what things could have been. However, there is little to do with a child that dances to the beat of her own drum, and can only pray to the Gods for strength to stand by her when she finally makes a life for herself in the world, now that she has come of age. Ok first off I want to say that this profile was very interesting. Her personality drew me in and the history just added to that. She's a very curious character and I'm looking forward to seeing how everything plays out in the rp. That being said, let's get started. Appearance: Great. You got everything in there. I can get quite a clear picture in my head and with you added that image it really comes together nicely. The attire is even justified with leads you right in to her personality section. Nice job. Personality: Woah. So much about her, and a lot leaves you wondering and wanting more. She seems like quite the character herself. I like how her class ties in with how she feels about herself. It's quite interesting to see how she feels like there is a duality to her. You even go as far as really pinpointing how her personality makes her with talking about her issues with interacting with people and how she prefers deeper connections. It allows the reader to really relate and understand your character. Awesome job. History: I'll start with overall. Overall it's nice and I enjoyed reading it. I got a clear idea of how her parents felt about her and how life could have been for her on a very basic level. That being said....I'm torn here. I almost feel like the history is incomplete. My reasoning is because there really isn't much about her life in there. I mean we get some idea of how life was for her, but it's on a much more broad and basic level. There is no interactions with others, no mention of where she is from. Nothing about maybe having friends, how she grew up, etc. From the way I read it, it was more about her inner turmoil and how her and her parents dealt with it. Again, this is why I'm not sure if it's done or not. I'd be more inclined to say it's incomplete for the basis of there is no actually history about her life, just her inner turmoil with her abilities. I obviously don't know what you were going for in your history, but if you are able to beef it up abit more and go maybe a bit more into detail about her life growing up and such, I think that should help. Like I said, enjoyable to read but I think the history needs work. Nice job! |
