What Can Vietnam Do To Confront China's Bullying

Even if Vietnam is weaker in military strength compared to China, the latter has no right to bully the former and steal what is duly owned by Vietnam under international law.

Vietnam must sustain the physical contact since they have enough ships to fulfill the job anyway. It must not allow China from operating and harvesting oil from that rig.

Vietnam must do more to make the world community aware of this latest act of arrogance and abuse by China. It must tell the world why Vietnam legally own it and why China has no right over that area.

It must gather the best of its public relations team, historians, legal experts and writers to present a clear and concise explanation on Vietnam's rights over these areas and in making the world understand that China is this evil.

Couple that with videos of China's ramming of their ships and other harassment.

TALKS WITH CHINA?

When China says it wants to talk it will simply fool you into believing that they want to talk so that you will go easy on them and let them continue their illegal activity.

Also, in that talk, it will simply push for its claim and muffle you with investment funds or billions of dollars loan.

It is better to pursue the confrontation and make China aware that China will risk ruining economic trade between the 2 countries.

This includes Vietnam's full support to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) that the US is promoting.

Another is allowing the US and its allies build its strategic base in Vietnam. Vietnam shares border with China. This will give the US a good strategic point in launching an attack against China.

Vietnam must also make China aware that their political relationship is at stake. If China will pursue the drilling, Vietnam must fulfill this retaliatory action.

These are Vietnam's bargaining chips. Use this in talking with China while it sustains the confrontation to suppress China's advance.

Vietnam can not get a good deal if China knows it has nothing to bargain anyway. Therefore, Vietnam must lay its cards on the table for China to realize.

VIETNAM MUST BE READY TO FULFILL THESE RETALIATORY ACTIONS VERSUS CHINA

These bargaining chips aren't just mere threats but genuine retaliatory actions that will be taken in case China will not remove its oil rig from that Vietnamese territory.

Vietnam should also include an enhanced defense and security cooperation with US, Japan, Philippines and other allies such as sharing intel and other vital data.

Vietnam should also strengthen it security patrol and must find courage to confront China in a calculated maneuver to suppress China's arrogance and greed. The world is watching anyway.

THIS IS NOT JUST VIETNAM'S CONCERN

This oil rig is just 18 nautical miles from the Paracels and around 220 KM from Quang Ngai province of Vietnam.

The Chinese machinegunned many Vietnamese soldiers here in May 1988 and forcibly occupied the islands controlled by the Vietnamese. 64 unarmed Vietnamese soldiers died here.

If China succeeds in operating this oil rig, it will encourage China to put up more of it across the Paracels and even the Spratly's.

This is not just Vietnam's concern but also of the other claimants in the Spraty's.

Superpowers like US, Russia and the EU nations as well as the whole of ASEAN must act together in condemning China and force it to remove its oil rig now.

Therefore, the world community must act and condemn China and force it to stop this. Trade embargo, removal from UN security council, diplomatic sanctions and other retaliatory actions versus China must be enforced.

VIETNAM MUST NOW JOIN PH IN THE UN TRIBUNAL TO PROTECT ITS TERRITORIAL CLAIM

Quoting Richard Villegas in the discussion on this at West Philippine Sea Coalition page, it is now time for Vietnam to join the Philippines in the international tribunal.

China will never bow down and will simply just "talk and take". Vietnam's joining the efforts at ITLOS will give it a better position and legitimacy to claim their territory.

Even if China flexes its muscle, the world knows that China is the criminal there for illegally and using violence to lay claim on the areas that were never China's own from the beginning.
