Col. Antonio Bautista Air Base, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan

Runway: 09/27
Position 09° 44' 31.50 N 118° 45' 31.39 E
Elevation: 71'
Based Units:

4th Tactical Operations Command (formerly 570th Composite Tactical Wing)
- OV-10, AUH-76
- Detachment, Rancudo Air Field, Pagasa Island, KIG

505th Search and Rescue Group (Advanced post)
- UH-1H

In March 21, 1975, the Puerto Princesa City Airport was improved and restructured and the PAF opened its base known as Puerto Princesa Air Base and since then shared its facilities with the provincial airport of Palawan. Its AOR is Palawan, the entire KIG and the Malampaya Gas field. The Bronco is loaned from 16th Strike Sqn and the Eagle from 20th Air Commando Sqn. 570th Composite Tactical Wing was reorganized into 4th Tactical Operations Command on May 10, 2006. It has a detachment in the KIG, the Rancudo Air Station. but no aircrafts are permanently based here, though regularly visited by C-130 or Naval Islanders on resupply missions or by OV-10 and S.211.

The base was named in honor of Col. Antonio Bautista, a F-86 Sabre Pilot who was killed in action in January 11, 1974 while engaged in a CAS mission against Muslim rebels.

Antonio Bautista Air Base is located on the narrow island of Palawan, making it the closest Philippine air base to the disputed Spratly Islands. The base shares a single, 9,000 foot long runway with Puerto Princesa Airport. (Coordinates: 9o44'31.50 N, 118o45'31.39 E)

The air base was opened on 21 March 1975 after the Philippine Air Force made improvements to the already existing civilian airport runway to make it suitable for military aircraft. The base was named after Colonel Antonio Bautista, a former PAF pilot who was shot down and killed during a battle with Philippine rebels in January 1974.

The 570th Composite Tactical Wing was based at Bautista AB and flew reconnaissance missions over the Spratly Islands to monitor the activities of other claimant nations.
On 25 November 2007, an S-211 with 2 airmen aboard was dispatched from Bautista AB to search for a capsized ship and disappeared near the Kalayaan island chain, a series of 9 Spratly islands which the Philippines claims, but China partially occupies. The aircraft subsequently went missing. There was speculation that the Chinese military might have shot the plane down. However, the Philippine government's position was that the aircraft probably crashed due to pilot error.

Antonio Bautista Air Base shares the air strip with the Puerto Princesa Airport. The air base is also adjacent to the Western Command (WESCOM) headquarters.

Plans to improve air base in Palawan underway

August 29, 2011

ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Aug. 29 (PIA) -– As part of the development program being pushed to improve the capabilities of the Armed Forces’ services in the province of Palawan, the planning team from the 570th Composite Tactical Wing (CTW) sat down with its counterpart from the Western Command (WESCOM) and the Naval Forces West (NFW) to map out the development of the air base in Palawan.

In a press release, the 6th Civil Relations Group of the Armed Forces of the Philippines reveals that a two-day conference was held last August 18 and 19 to formulate the Master Development Plan of Antonio Bautista Air Base (ABAB).

ABAB is one of the nine air bases eyed for the priority development programs of the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

Maximizing the use of its land resources is the primary objective of coming up with a Master Development Plan for ABAB. The lay-outs of the land areas of both WESCOM and NFW were integrated in conceptualizing the plan since the two are adjacent to ABAB.

As the three military headquarters share some common needs, the planners aim to come up with a strategic design that would serve as a basis for deciding where to put up a facility, like a hospital for instance, that is most convenient and accessible to all.

Equally important is that conceptualizing the Master Development Plan would allow the planners to decide what project is most suited to a certain land area so as to maximize its utilization.

Experts have been consulted in formulating the conceptual plan for ABAB. For instance, with the help of an environmentalist, the effect of a certain project on the natural environment has been assessed and taken into consideration.

Should the National Headquarters approve the plan and the National Government provide the fund for its implementation right after, it would not only translate to an improved headquarters’ lay-out, but it would also mean better services for the people. (JPA/6CRG-AFP/RVC-PIA9 BaSulTa)

Air Force to beef up capabilities in Palawan

By: Elmer Badilla, InterAksyon.com
March 14, 2013 7:58 PM

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Philippines -- The Philippine Air Force will soon be upgrading its capabilities in the country’s western section.

Speaking at the 40th founding Anniversary of the 570th Composite Tactical Wing in Palawan Thursday, Air Force chief Lieutenant General Lauro Catalino dela Cruz said the upgrade will include the setting up of a radar system on Mt. Salakot, northwest of Puerto Princesa, by the end of the year, and the deployment of two of the eight new W-3A Sokol helicopters acquired from Poland.

Dela Cruz said he personally requested the choppers to be fitted for search and rescue and disaster response missions.

Aside from these, the Air Force chief said he will also request amphibious aircraft, together with the Philippine Navy, for the same purpose.

The upgrade is part of the Department of National Defense’s plan to set up a Center of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response in Palawan that will serve as the nerve center for nationwide disaster and response operations.

Two additional hangars will also be constructed at Antonio Bautista Air Base in Puerto Princesa to store relief supplies and accommodate additional air assets, including long-range patrol aircraft to be stationed there in the future.

Dela Cruz also promised to expedite the long overdue repair of Rancudo Airstrip on Pag-asa Island by early next year.
