The Flamingos or the Albatross was transferred to 15th Strike Wing on the 1st of May,1976. It was employed as a search and rescue aircraft and the unit 270th Squadron was renamed 27th search, rescue and reconnaisance squadron. Armed with two rocket pods, the Grumman HU-16 Albatross was being utilized by the 530th ABG for transport, as mother ship of smaller aircraft, forward air controller and search and rescue with limited close air support capability. At 15thSW, her mission remained the same but only in support of combat missions participated in by the AT-28D's. As a search and rescue plane, the Albatross would orbit the pre-determined bail out area of the AT-28D's. Towards the end of the seventies, the OPEC re-emerged and the cartel doubled oil prices in 1979. As a result the philippine Air Force had to limit its flying operations. in fact, the blue diamonds were mothballed in the same year. The 15th Strike Wing was not to escape unscathed. A crippling short age of spare parts was felt that year and a drastic reorganization was put in place to increase the operational rate of the T-28's, the SF260W, the C-47, and the HU-16 Albatross. The Philippine Air Force operated a mixture of Grumman SA-16A, HU-16B, HU-16D and HU-16E. The Albatross was assigned to the 205th Composite Wing performing search and rescue missions with the 505th Air Rescue Squadron. In the 70s, the type was transferred to the 15th Strike Wing's 27th Search Rescue and Reconnaissance Squadron. What is believed to be the oldest Albatross in existence in the world is on display at the PAF Museum in Villamor Air Base.
