Awards and decorations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines are military decorations which recognize service and personal accomplishments while a member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy and Philippine Marine Corps).

The Philippine Medal of Valor, is the highest military award given to members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and allied military personnel. It is awarded by the President of the Philippines to military personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, including recognized guerrilla forces.

The Distinguished Conduct Star is the second highest military award of the Philippines, preceded in precedence only by the Medal of Valor. The award was established in 1939, by President Manuel L. Quezon. With its establishment the award replaced the Philippine Constabulary Distinguished Conduct Star.

The Gold Cross is a decoration of the Armed Forces of the Philippines which recognizes gallantry in action. It is the fourth highest military award of the Philippines. It is awarded by the Chief of Staff Armed Forces of the Philippines, or other senior commanders, to members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines for gallantry in action not warranting the award of the Distinguished Conduct Star.

This Silver Wing Medal is a military decoration awarded by Armed Forces of the Philippines to Philippine and allied military personnel. The Silver Wing Medal is awarded in only one class, and may be awarded by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines; the Commanding General, PAR Area Command; and Major Service Commanders. The award is given for "meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight and a single act of merit or for participation in sustained operations activities against the enemy while in an aerial flight."

CSAFP awards the WPM to Sgt Castro Kitong, 38, who was wounded in a clash with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu province on Fri, Nov 14. AFP Chief Visits Wounded Warriors in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY--Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. visited the troops in Zamboanga City to receive operational updates about the military's drive against lawless elements in the region.

Lt Gen Rustico Guerrero, the commander of WESMINCOM, said that the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu is on the run.

He said that the bandits suffered more casualties aside from the 10 dead and 18 wounded which was reported earlier.

Guerrero also said that the bandit group is now using female fighters and minors.

After the briefing, Catapang headed to Camp Navarro General Hospital where most of the wounded personnel are being treated.

He pinned combat medals to deserving troops who fought valiantly during the first major clash against bandits in Sulu this year.

Among the medals which was granted include the Wounded Personnel Medal and the Gold Cross Medal, the third highest combat medal in the AFP.

1st Lt Michael Asistores, 30, was among the awardees. He received both the GCM and WPM. He was wounded while trading fires with numerous bandits who attempted to rout the recon elements led by 1st Lt Dante Espiritu.

"I am thankful for the recognitions. I simply fought hard to save my wounded men."

In his statement after the awarding ceremony, Catapang said that he will honor all soldiers who performed very well in their assigned mission

"I am recognizing their exemplary courage in combat. I will make sure that they receive the support that they need while recuperating," said Catapang.

Sulu encounter team leaders get Gold Cross

Larawan ng magigiting na mandirigma ng 1st Scout Ranger Company na sina 1st Lt Dante "Sprite" Espiritu at ang sugatang si 1st Lt Michael Asistores.

Dahil sa naipakitang kabayanihan sa pakikipaglaban na kung saan ay wala syang iniwang kahit isang kasamahang sugatan, inirerekomenda ng kanyang Battalion Commander na si Lt Col Eugenio Boquio si Sprite sa award na Distinguished Conduct Star, pangalawa sa Medal for Valor award.

Si Sprite ay ipinagmamalaking produkto ng ROTC at ng Officer Preparatory Course. Dati syang ROTC Commander sa Pagadian City.

Basta nag-ROTC, astig na lider! Walang iwanan!
