Customs building up water patrol division, acquiring boats

2015/01/04

The Bureau of Customs is once again building up its Water Patrol Division. Deputy Commissioner for Enforcement Ariel Nepomuceno said that it is already approved.

The bureau has requested for PhP20-million budget for two new patrol boats. These boats are expected to arrive this year.

The establishment of this new enforcement division has its cost, but “if you would relate that to how much we are losing to smuggling, I think it is a right investment,” Deputy Commissioner Nepomuceno said.

“The coordination [with Philippine Coast Guard] itself might be blamed, whether right or wrong. So if you have your own capability, you have nobody to blame. You will be personally accountable. That for me is the biggest advantage,” Nepomuceno said in previous interview last year.
