13 Marines killed, huge number of Maute casualties too![]() Marines in Marawi 13 Marines killed in Marawi By: Allan Nawal, Frances Mangosing, Jeoffrey Maitem - @inquirerdotnetInquirer Mindanao, INQUIRER.net / 01:54 PM June 10, 2017 (Updated, 4:06 p.m.) MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – The military’s attempt to push into the city’s villages of Bangolo, Marinaut and Lilod – in an attempt to secure the raising of the flag at Campo Ranao and at the city hall on Monday – suffered a series of setbacks with government troopers getting killed and wounded since Thursday. On Friday alone, 13 Marines were confirmed killed, according to Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera, the spokesperson of the 1st Infantry Division. He said Marines were moving into Barangay (village) Mapandi in the conduct of clearing operations when they clashed with about 30 Maute and Abu Sayyaf gunmen on Friday. He said the “enemies” set off improvised explosive devices, fired rocket-propelled grenades and B-40 projectiles on the advancing troops and killed 13 Marines. A military official said that the encounter between the government forces and the terrorists lasted for 14 hours. “Initial reports indicate that the fierce firefight ensued when the Marines assaulted the reported enemy position at around 330 a.m. and firefight continued up to around 5 p.m. of the same day,” Armed Forces public affairs chief Col. Edgard Arevalo said. The firefight left the massive number of casualties in a single day. The Marawi City fighting is now on its 19th day. The latest figure raised the military’s death toll to 58 since May 23, while the number of wounded troopers was still being consolidated as clashes continued as of Saturday, Herrera said. Fighting still ongoing Saturday’s clash was brought about by the military’s further attempt to push into the village of Bangolo. Troops were met with heavy resistance from the combined Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups, with firefight lasting for two hours starting 6 a.m. Wayward bullets fired by the extremists even found their way near the Lanao del Sur provincial capitol, which is about 30 minutes by foot from Bangolo. The air strikes that were being conducted appeared to have not diminished the fighting capability of the extremists – 18 days since the clashes started. Herrera acknowledged that the “enemies” continue to put up resistance against advancing troops even as bombs and howitzers rained on the villages they had been holding. But he said despite the resistance, “our soldiers continue to gain more foothold into the inner areas of the city” and were now in Barangay Mapandi, site of Friday’s heavy clash. Herrera said the military continued to clear a number of areas even as the firefight was continuing and was optimistic that the raising of flag at the Marawi City Hall and at Campo Ranao will go on as scheduled on Monday. He said the military was also being cautious in its offensive, considering that around 100 hostages, including Catholic priest Teresito Suganob, remained in the hands of the extremists. The hostages, he said, were being used by the armed men as shields and “they let them do things to their advantage.” He was not specific on what tasks were given to the civilians by the extremists. Herrera said the “enemies” also use Arabic schools and mosques in the area to stage attacks. These structures cannot just be targeted though, he added. Herrera also said the extremists might have also been moving around using a network of old tunnels in the city. “Our forces will continue to execute operations to ensure we save lives through expedited and deliberate military actions,” he said. He dispelled fears the civilian hostages might have been killed in the air strikes too, adding that ground reports indicated the military was precise in its targets. “We have no reports of civilians getting killed in air strikes,” he added. Asked about the remaining number of the extremists holed in some areas here, Herrera said there were still around 200-230 gunmen remaining, including their top leaders, Isnilon Hapilon and Abdullah and Omar Maute. “They are still inside commanding their men. They are utilizing and maximizing tunnels for their logistical support and for their protection,” he said. ‘Courageous’ Marine among those killed Herrera said one of those killed was 1st Lt. Frederick Savellano, leader of the Marines who recovered the P52 million cash from a house in Marawi and arms cache. ![]() 52 millions pesos in cash, as well as checks and weapons, ammo confiscated from a Maute post “He was a very courageous and a very professional soldier. It’s sad he was killed,” Herrera said. Identities of the other fatalities were withheld pending the notification of their families. “We salute these enormous display of heroism and raw courage of these fallen Marines in the course of the fight to clear Marawi of the remaining Members of the Maute-ISIS Group,” Arevalo said. Herrera said the terrorists also suffered huge casualty, “but we are not certain about the number.” He said they were checking reports that brothers Madi and Omar Maute were among those killed. The ongoing crisis started last May 23 after government forces tried to arrest Abu Sayyaf senior leader Isnilon Hapilon, also the alleged emir of Islamic State in Southeast Asia. Members of the Abu Sayyaf and the Maute Group came for reinforcements. Thousands of residents have also fled since then. “This temporary setback has not diminished our resolve a bit. It instead primed up our determination to continue our prudent advances to neutralize the enemy, save the innocent lives trapped in the fight, and set the conditions for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Marawi,” Arevalo said. With a report from Julie Alipala/IDL Read more: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/904250/13-marines-killed-in-marawi#ixzz4jfYdxd3G Edited by Flipzi, Thu Oct 26, 2017 11:33 pm.

BROTHERS, OMAR and MADIE MAUTE WERE REPORTED KILLED ![]() Military validating reports Maute brothers Omar, Madie were killed in Marawi Published June 10, 2017 3:16pm Updated June 10, 2017 3:22pm By ANNA FELICIA BAJO, GMA News A military official on Saturday said they were validating reports that brothers Madie and Omar Maute were killed following continuing clashes between government troops and local terrorists in Marawi City. "There are reports that Omar and Madie were killed in the operations. We are still validating this report. But there are strong indications that they are killed... in separate incidents, in separate firefight," Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera, 1st Infantry Battalion spokesperson, told reporters in a press briefing. "As I said, we are doing the validation right now. Part ng validation namin is we want to see the body," Herrera added. "We will give you the details when we receive the reports," Herrera said. In a video recovered by the military, the Maute brothers were seen planning the attack in Marawi City with Abu Sayyaf group leader Isnilon Hapilon and other local terrorists. The parents of Maute brothers had earlier been nabbed by authorities. The father, Cayamora Macaraya Maute, was arrested at a checkpoint in Davao City and was later brought to a jail in Metro Manila. Maute matriarch Ominta Romato Maute, alias Farhana, was nabbed in Masiu, Lanao del Sur on Friday night. She was later brought to Cagayan de Oro City. Meanwhile, Herrera, in the same press conference on Saturday, echoed an earlier statement from AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla Jr. that Hapilon was still in Marawi. "Yes, Isnilon Hapilon is still in the area," said Hererra. President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire Mindanao under martial law after Maute group members attacked Marawi City last May 23. More than 200 people, including militants and civilians, have been killed in the ongoing conflict between the military and local terrorists. — MDM, GMA News - See more at: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/news/regions/613993/military-validating-reports-of-maute-brothers-omar-madie-killed-in-marawi/story/#sthash.GKS1Zb7C.dpuf Edited by Flipzi, Thu Oct 26, 2017 11:35 pm.

![]() USAF P-3 'Orion' surveillance plane AFP admits getting technical assistance from US military to end Marawi Siege US special forces aid Philippine troops to end Marawi siege Reuters, ABS-CBN News Posted at Jun 10 2017 01:22 PM | Updated as of Jun 10 2017 03:38 PM MANILA (UPDATED) - US special forces are helping the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to end a siege of the southern town of Marawi City by militants allied to Islamic State, a US embassy spokesperson in Manila told Reuters. Until now, there had been no confirmation that US forces were assisting in the battle for Marawi City, which is on its third week. Their involvement comes after months of strain between the two allies stoked by Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte's hostility towards Washington and his pledges to throw out US troops who have long provided training and assistance. "At the request of the government of the Philippines, US special operations forces are assisting the AFP with ongoing operations in Marawi that helps AFP commanders on the ground in their fight against Maute and ASG militants," the spokesperson said. "For security reasons, we are not able to discuss specific technical details of US support for ongoing AFP operations," the spokesperson added. In a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Philippine Army 1st Infantry Division spokesperson Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera clarified that US forces were only providing technical support and are not part of clashes on the ground. "They are not fighting. They are just providing technical support," Herrera said. He said the US is helping in the exchange of intelligence reports and training. "The presence of the US counterparts facilitate the exchanges of intelligence, facilitate subject matter experts exchange, and also provides training exchanges and, of course, the technical support that we are sharing together in the fight against global terrorism," he said. On Friday, a US spy plane was seen flying over Marawi City. The Philippine military earlier vowed to liberate Marawi City on Monday, Independence Day. http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/06/10/17/us-special-forces-aid-philippine-troops-to-end-marawi-siege Edited by Flipzi, Thu Oct 26, 2017 11:34 pm.
