Another 64 separatist rebels loyal to Nur Misuari have also been arrested, the military said. Nine soldiers and police officers have lost their lives in the siege and while 98 others were injured. Seven civilians have been killed while 39 others were hurt. At least 67 hostages have also been able to flee. The fighting has displaced more than 72,000 people. Government forces continued their offensive Monday against Misuari's group. The Air Force launched air strikes for the first time, while troops on the ground pushed back the gunmen to the shoreline of barangay Santa Barbara. Government forces also took control of a mosque that MNLF fighters used as a hideout in the past few days. "We continue to push forward and we are now constricting this MNLF Misuari faction so we can end this conflict as soon as possible. We now believe they are not an organized and basically they're fleeing," said Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala. Interior Secretary Mar Roxas told ANC it's difficult to say how many hostages are still being held by the gunmen. - with ANC http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/regions/09/16/13/51-mnlf-gunmen-killed-zamboanga-siege-pnp In a related news; Palace: PNoy staying in Zamboanga City but not neglecting other duties By KIMBERLY JANE TAN, GMA NewsSeptember 17, 2013 3:19pm Malacañang on Tuesday assured the public that President Benigno Aquino III is not neglecting his other duties while he is in Zamboanga City, where government forces and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) are engaged in a standoff. "He is in touch with the Cabinet officials [and] he is in touch with the Executive Secretary, so the business of government runs even if he is in Zamboanga," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said during a press conference Tuesday. He said that Aquino is still in Zamboanga City because he is needed as the commander-in-chief. "There is a military option that’s being exercised right now. He gives support, he gives directions, so he plays a big role," he said. He also said the President's presence in Zamboanga City inspires the people and government troops there. "He has inspired the Armed Forces there, the police forces, and also the city government...It shows the confidence that he also has in the Armed Forces and also the...people of Zamboanga City appreciate the presence of the President during this time of crisis in Zamboanga City," he said. Lacierda, however, refused to state how long Aquino will stay in the province. "We will not disclose when he will decide to come back. We don’t even disclose where specifically he is," he said. The peace process Meanwhile, Lacierda assured former President Fidel Ramos that they are doing what they can for the peace process to succeed. "The Bangsamoro Framework Agreement is building on the gains of the 1996 Final Peace Agreement," he said. It was under the Ramos administration that the peace agreement with the MNLF was signed in 1996. He issued the statement after Ramos reportedly called Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Quintos-Deles to express his concern that the crisis may delay the negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). "He told me to make sure that we complete the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro [including its annexes]. He said that we should not be distracted or deterred by the crisis situation in Zamboanga," said Deles in a statement released Tuesday. Earlier, Deles said they are open to considering Ramos to negotiate with former MNLF leader Nur Misuari. —KG, GMA News http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/326816/news/nation/palace-pnoy-staying-in-zamboanga-city-but-not-neglecting-other-duties Recommended read: Handling Hostage-taking in Zambo Siege MOUT and the hostage-taking http://w11.zetaboards.com/NDSFP/topic/9149070/ Edited by Flipzi, Thu Sep 19, 2013 11:54 pm.

from Major Harold Magallanes Cabunoc (Philippine Army) from FB page Sept 18, 2013 As of today, 11 soldiers died as heroes in Zamboanga City. 105 others were hurt in the fierce clashes with Misuari's people who were hiding behind civilian hostages. We are not demoralized because they have not died in vain. We have rescued more than a hundred of the hostages. We have constricted the enemy stronghold to a small area. Flights will resume tomorrow. Some shops have reopened. Our soldiers will continue to fight for peace and are willing to make sacrifices for the country and people. |
