MNLF in Davao–I recall how Nur Misuari also marshalled several months before the Zamboanga incident his forces in Davao City in a peaceful rally at Sonny Dizon’s horse tracks at the Crocodile Park area in Matina, all with MNLF flags hoisted and paraded. After Nur Misuari in his usual fiery and kilometric speech unleashed his angst, they peacefully dispersed and went home. Only a massive traffic jam at the diversion road saw the worst of it. Zambo Formula — But not in Zamboanga City. MNLF sources claimed they were holding the same peaceful protest rally in Zamboanga. But the problem erupted when some MNLF elements were first arrested and rounded up with the City Mayor Beng Climaco vowing “no MNLF flag be hoisted at all cost in Zamboanga”. This triggered armed reinforcements from Ustadz Habier Malik. This also explained why some MNLF surrenderees were forthright when they confessed that they were there at the outset not for any firefight but only to join a rally proclaiming Mindanao independence. The rest is history. http://newsdesk.asia/believe-rody-duterte/ |

Navy transports 266 detained MNLF members to Manila By Roel Pareño (philstar.com) | Updated December 27, 2013 - 1:21pm ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - The Philippine Navy (PN) transported under tight security Friday all the detained members of the Nur Misuari faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) involved in the siege, an official said. The military, police and the personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) escorted 266 MNLF detainees into the Navy Landing Ship Transport (LST) 550 from the San Ramon Penal Farm (SRPF) on Thursday night. Twentysix of the detained MNLF rebels came from the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC), according to a BJMP official. Col. Andrelino Colina, commander of the Task Force Zamboanga (TFZ), said the transfer of the MNLF detainees was made in coordination with other law enforcement units, including the BJMP, Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Philippine National Police (PNP). “The movement of the detainees was not made public due to security consideration,” Colina said. According to Colina, they could not discount possibility of sabotage even as they were prepared to thwart such an attempt. All the MNLF prisoners at the San Ramon Penal Farm were properly turned over by the BJMP to the military and were all aboard the Navy ship that departed under heavy guards about 8 a.m for Manila. Chief Superintendent Juanito Vaño, Police Regional Office 9 (PRO) director, committed 552 of his police forces with 164 soldiers, 51 navy, and 105 BJMP personnel securing the detainees enroute to Manila. The transfer of the detained MNLF members was based on the resolution approved by the Supreme Court (SC) and the regional court here to transfer the rebels to the detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig in Manila. Meanwhile, tension has slowly eased in this city following the transfer of the detained MNLF rebels, according to the military and police. However, government forces and local police said security is still heightened in this city to prevent any possible lashback from the sympathizers and supporters of the MNLF under Misuari, the erstwhile leader who remains at large. Misuari and the detained MNLF members were charged with rebellion and violation of international humanitarian law, genocide and other crimes against humanity in connection with the September siege. http://www.philstar.com/nation/2013/12/27/1272512/navy-transports-266-detained-mnlf-members-manila |

Diabetes killed MNLF commander wanted for Zamboanga battle–military MANILA, Philippines – It was not bullets but his uncontrolled high blood sugar level that killed commander Habier Malik of the Moro National Liberation Front, the Philippine Daily Inquirer was told Friday. In separate interviews, two sources gave two different versions of Malik’s death but both traced his eventual demise to his diabetes. But his death last November confirmed one thing: that Malik escaped from the heavy fighting between a group of MNLF guerrillas which he led and government security forces in Zamboanga City last September. Malik led some 300 fighters MNLF fighters loyal to founding chairman Nur Misuari in what the military claims was an attempt to take over Zamboanga City on grounds that the government had abrogated a 1996 peace agreement with the MNLF to be replaced with a deal the government is negotiating with Moro Islamic Liberation Front, one a faction of the MNLF. “We know Malik has died. It is a matter of recovering his body,” the Inquirer’s military source said, requesting anonymity. ![]() HABIER MALIK SUCCUMBED TO 2 BULLET WOUNDS HE GOT FROM THE ZAMBO BATTLE Nur camp confirms Haber Malik’s death By Francisco Tuyay | Jan. 03, 2014 at 12:01am A top commander of the Moro National Liberation Front-Nur Misuari faction who led the three-week siege in Zamboanga City reportedly died from two bullets wounds during the final stage of the stand-off even as the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) had resumed attacks against military detachments in Central Mindanao. HABER MALIK MNLF spokesman Absalom Cerveza disclosed that Haber Malik, Misuari’s most trusted commander, succumbed from bullet wounds at his arm pit and leg from a still unknown caliber in the group’s hideout in a forested area somewhere in Jolo, Sulu three weeks ago. “Commander Malik died recently due to wounds at his arm pit and leg he sustained from the skirmishes while fighting with lawmen in Zamboanga City,” Cerveza said. He said Malik had actually survived the Zamboanga City clashes despite the intense volley of gunfire from security forces, but his wounds had not healed because of his diabetes. At the height of the skirmishes between the MNLF and security forces, Malik was reportedly among those killed in the clashes, but Cerveza denied the report and had said that Malik was able to escape, Cerveza said he did not know the exact date of Malik’s death and the site where the body was buried. “What I know is that he was buried somewhere in the jungles in Jolo, three weeks ago,” Cerveza said. Malik, along with a group of heavily-armed MNLF rebels stormed Zamboanga City Hall at dawn of September 9 last year and spread to at least six villages where they held hundreds of innocent civilians as shield against the advancing government forces. More than two hundred people, including twenty from the government side and twelve civilians were killed, while 177 others were wounded during the standoff, which was triggered by the declaration of independence of Mindanao by Misuari’s group. Misuari decided to claim independence for Mindano after the government abrogated the tripartite review talks with the MNLF on the implementation of the Final Peace Agreement of 1976. Meanwhile, Col. Dickson Hermoso, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said the BIFF attacks on military detachments wounded a soldier. Hermoso said that on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at around 10:30 p.m., BIFF elements attacked the 7th Infantry Battalion and the 5th Special Forces Battalion detachments in Bgy. Saido Polangi in Pikit, North Cotabato. “The BIFF elements positioned themselves in Barangay Dasawao of Datu Piang, Maguindanao, in between the Maguindanao river. This harassment against our troops continued up until the morning of January 1,” he said. - With Florante Solmerin http://manilastandardtoday.com/2014/01/03/nur-camp-confirms-haber-malik-s-death/ Edited by Flipzi, Mon Jan 6, 2014 9:54 am.

US military assisted PH forces during Battle of Zamboanga By Julie S. Alipala Inquirer Mindanao 4:30 pm | Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014 ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A US military unit stationed in Mindanao assisted Philippine soldiers with “information and communication assets” during a 23-day battle between government troops and renegade guerrillas of the Moro National Liberation Front here in September last year. US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg made the admission here during Monday’s ceremonial turnover of command of the Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines (JSOTFP) here. “During that period the JSOTFP provided vital information, communication assets to help Philippine forces,” Goldberg said in his speech. “The constructive relationships with the military and civilian leaders here were critical in enabling JSOTFP team members to provide situational awareness to our partners and also to the embassy, which contributed to the arrest of over a hundred fighters that were involved in that attack by the MNLF.” Colonel Robert McDowell, the JSOTFP commander, was replaced by Colonel Erik Brown. It was “a monumental opportunity” to have been part of the resolution of the monthlong siege of Zamboanga City, McDowell told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in an interview. “It represented what we worked together for so many years, shoulder to shoulder, that will make a difference. To be a silent hero, it’s really quite an honor. It is the fact that I was able to be part of it and I will never forget it,” he added. McDowell also lauded the sacrifices made by the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines despite the limitations. “What I have seen is the Philippine armed forces are very capable in rendering aid and assistance to the Filipino people, and they are very capable of eliminating a threat and they care much about their country,” he said. “I think what they did in Zamboanga was more phenomenal than what most US troops could have done with such little notice. They performed brilliantly,” Mc Dowell added. Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco Salazar said the American soldiers provided maps and latrines at the height of the siege. “They supported in terms of maps. They were the first group to give us latrines (for the evacuees),” the mayor said.
