Nexter Narwhal remotely operated naval gun system video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbtNlCW9Odc - rapid-firing - remote-controlled - stabilized (sharp aim even during rough waters) - night operations capability Narwhal 20A (by Nexter) remotely operated naval ship cannon system http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwqTVaaVdgk - 20mm rapid-firing naval gun Nexter the French Defence company with its Narwhal Naval remote weapon systems is particularly designed for use in light ships with very high manoeuvrability for monitoring and close-in combat actions but may also be suitable for heavier tonnage ships. The effectiveness of the weapon is optimised by a stabilised sight associated with a fire-control system, while improving the operator's safety. In its basic configuration, the NARWHAL consists of a gyrostabilised mounting armed with a 20 mm cannon, a day camera and a fire-control system which is remotely-contolled from a control panel enabling system operation, target acquisition and tracking and fire opening by the operator. ADVANTAGES OF CIWS 360 degree CIWS coverage? You cant have 360 coverage if you only have 1 CIWS gun unless it is installed on a mast with no obstruction. Normally, a set of CIWS is employed. It must be at least 2 or 4. You CANNOT use the 76mm Oto Melara gun for anti-missile engagements. Accuracy will be impossible. Only the rapid firing CIWS can do that, utilizing hundreds of trajectories HOPING one or two will hit the missile. So, to be able to get 360 coverage for CIWS, 2 guns at least are needed. A ship, such as a Frigate, needs at least 2 of this. PHALANX, GOALKEEPER OR BETTER. That's the ship's last line of defense. It is a cheaper option than losing the P10 BILLON PESO-ship. It must be 360 degree coverage. otherwise, if it's just 300 degrees, and the enemy realizes it, it will go for that window. How about SRBOC? It's helpful but I will rely on the Phalanx CIWS since the SRBOC can be defeated by newer anti-EMI or anti-jammer feature. You cant jam a brainless 30mm bullet. Unless, you take control of the Fire Control System itself. How about an anti-missile missile? I will put my bet on the Phalanx still. The anti-missile missile needs guidance that can be jammed. The brainless 30mm bullet dont need guidance. Simply point at first then shoot and you know it wont change course. I will use the anti-missile missile for longer range though. But if the threat manages to pass through, then the bullet screen. |

BAE System's MK38 Mod 2 25mm autocannon ![]() ![]() photo: credit to owners Mk38 Mod 2, 25mm Bushmaster autocannon, remote-controlled The Mk 38 Mod 2 Machine Gun System (MGS) from BAE Systems and Rafael sets the standard for shipboard defense against small, fast and agile surface threats. With more than 90 system variants deployed worldwide, the stabilized, remote controlled Mk 38 Mod 2 minor caliber gun is proven capable in defending against multiple surface threats - in all sea states. As a spiral derivative of the Typhoon Mk 25 Weapon System developed by Rafael, the enhanced Mk 38 Mod 2 is the U.S. Navy's ORDALT choice to upgrade the Mk 38 25-mm Chain Gun. Designed for the mission of ship self-protection, the Mk 38 Mod 2 MGS can be applied to a wide range of different ship classes and platform designs of 50 tons or greater displacement. The system's non-penetrating deck design allows for a variety of potential applications throughout hull and superstructure locations to optimize overall operational effectiveness. The Mk 38 Mod 2 main weapon is the M242 Bushmaster 25-mm Chain Gun, a proven NATO standard auto cannon with 2.5 km range and selectable rates of fire. The M242 Bushmaster fires all USN-approved 25-mm ammunition at up to 180 rounds per minute, with the Mk 38 Mod 2 providing 168 rounds on-mount. The Mk 38 Mod 2 system incorporates the service-proven Toplite electro-optical fire control system to optimize effective engagement of enemy targets during day, night and in all weather conditions. Toplite provides 4-axis gimbal stabilization, forward looking infra-red radar with three fields-of-view, a low contrast, low light level color television camera and an eye-safe laser range finder. The Mk 38 Mod 2 provides for crew safe conditions with a remote operation console located in the Combat Information Center or in other protected ship structure. The operation console consists of the main control panel and a multi-function display that provides a single controller with simple operations in all modes. For near-term application, Mk 38 Mod 2 has begun installation on board USN surface combatants/amphibious ships. BAE Systems has successfully delivered two initial systems that are aboard the USS Princeton. The Mk 38 Mod 2 has strong potential for use aboard future platforms such as DDG 1000, the Littoral Combat Ship and the LHA(R), as well as U.S. Coast Guard's Integrated Deepwater System ships. - See more at: http://www.baesystems.com/product/BAES_020038/mk-38-mod-2-machine-gun-system-mgs?_afrLoop=770920380179000&_afrWindowMode=0&_afrWindowId=xuqgj5sq_1# MK38 Mod 2 videos Video 1: BAE Systems - Mk 38 Mod 2 25mm Machine Gun System (MGS) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3XWy1oYDOI Video 2: Night shooting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bKuOKF1bN0 Video 3: Live fire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQDCY_gA-G0 RELATED LINKS Hamilton-class Patrol Frigate of the Philippine Navy http://w11.zetaboards.com/NDSFP/topic/9184038/ BRP Ramon Alcaraz (PF-16) http://w11.zetaboards.com/NDSFP/topic/9184068/ Edited by Flipzi, Sat Oct 12, 2013 1:59 pm.
