![]() ABS-CBN photo Cabinet convoy chopper crashes in Marawi ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 08/07/2014 8:25 PM | Updated as of 08/07/2014 8:26 PM MARAWI CITY (UPDATED) - A brand-new Philippine Air Force Sokol helicopter accompanying a Cabinet mission aerial convoy that included Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin crashed in Marawi City Thursday afternoon, leaving 2 people injured. The helicopter, one of 8 bought by the Department of National Defense (DND) from Polish company PZL Swidnik for P2.8 billion, crashed near a house shortly after take-off from the Army's 103rd Infantry Brigade headquarters at Camp Ranao, the DND said. It was serving as a back-up helicopter, which is similar to the aircraft that was carrying Roxas and Gazmin. The utility helicopter was carrying 4th Infantry Division Commander Maj. Gen. Ricardo Visaya, 4th Infantry Division Inspector-General Col. Alexander Macario, and at least 10 other people. The two military officials escaped unharmed while the two injured victims were identified as helicopter crew member Staff Sgt. Darius Valdez and a boy, Santiago Savedra, who was playing on the ground when he was hit by debris from the crash, a police report said. "It was just an exhibition," Visaya said in jest after the crash. "About two or three minutes after takeoff, it couldn't gain further altitude. It then turned left and crashed. It didn't explode. No one killed among us but some were hurt." He said the Cabinet officials including Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla visited an electricity project in Marawi City. Petilla was in another aircraft, a Bell helicopter. Visaya said the ill-fated Sokol was the third to take off from the ground. "We were less than 50 feet (when the helicopter crashed)...Rescue teams from Marawi City responded very promptly," he said. He said the helicopter was wrecked and can no longer be used. Photos taken by TV Patrol Northern Mindanao showed the helicopter lying on its side on a wrecked house. Its rotor blades were detached and parts of the wrecked helicopter can be seen scattered on the ground. The other Sokol helicopter carrying Gazmin and Roxas turned around to check on the condition of the downed Sokol. Visaya joined Gazmin and Roxas in their Sokol helicopter that later safely landed in Cagayan de Oro City. The other passengers of the ill-fated helicopter travelled by land. Capt. Franco Suelto, spokesman of the 1st Infantry Division, said the Sokol helicopter encountered engine failure. "It encountered technical failure after takeoff," he said. Armed Forces Public Affairs office chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, meanwhile, blamed strong winds for the incident. "The Sokol chopper crashed about 2:23 p.m due to loss of control when heavy winds struck the aircraft." The DND, in a statement Thursday, said it has launched an investigation to look into the cause of the crash. Zagala said Air Force Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Delgado is leading the investigation. Another Sokol helicopter, which is part of the 8 delivered by PZL Swidnik, was earlier stuck at the Armed Forces general headquarters. The incident was reportedly caused by a battery problem. - with reports from Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News Iligan; dzMM; ANC More photos http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/regions/08/07/14/cabinet-convoy-chopper-crashes-marawi Twin engine ito at redundant din ang wirings.

Polish-made PAF helicopter in crash landing after Marawi take off MANILA - Reports reaching Manila indicated that a Sokol helicopter of the Philippine Air Force (PAF), one of the eight PZL W-3A Sokols ordered from Poland, crashed just after take off in Marawi City on Thursday. The Philippine Army's 1st Infantry Division Commander, Brig. Gen. Gerardo Barrientos Jr., said the incident happened at around 2:26 p.m. at 103rd Brigade's Camp Ranao. "Thank God all are safe. They're on their way home now, to Manila, on board another Sokol helicopter," Barrientos told Interaksyon.com in a phone interview. Capt. Franco Suelto, Spokesman of the 1st Division, pointed out that the helicopter did not crash, per se, but experienced a soft crash landing -- or a technical failure after take-off -- about a kilometer from take off but still within the perimeter of the camp. The Department of National defense issued the following statement regarding the incident, in part: "The helicopter was part of the aerial convoy of Defense Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin and Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas III. "We still have no information on the exact identities of the passengers but we were informed that everyone is safe. "Both Secretary Gazmin and Secretary Roxas were aboard another helicopter when the incident occurred. "An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of this incident." When contacted on his mobile phone, the 4th ID Commander, Maj. Gen. Ricardo Visaya, said, after the incident: "We're OK now and on board the second Sokol chopper. Don't worry my friend, we're alive and still kicking." Visaya said some high government officials were in Marawi for a conference over the Mindanao power shortage issue. According to Barrientos, the pilot of the Sokol suffered a slight foot injury as the result of the rough landing, but the Sokol may have incurred heavy damage. The helicopter was among the eight brand new aircraft purchased by the Department of National Defense (DND) and PAF from PZL Swidnik based in Poland two years ago. The aircraft was once lambasted by President Aquino in his state of the nation address when he pointed out that the door gun was blocking the door opening for mounting and dismounting troops in a combat situation. Another unit was also once the subject of criticisms when it remained stuck for almost a week on the parade ground at Camp Aguinaldo after it lost power while trying to take off. http://www.interaksyon.com/article/92837/polish-made-paf-helicopter-in-crash-landing-after-marawi-take-off |

Downed Sokol chopper repairable, says Air Force official By Bong Lozada |INQUIRER.net3:00 pm | Monday, August 11th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines – After one of the Sokol helicopters that escorted three Cabinet secretaries in Marawi City crashed last Thursday, a Philippine Air Force official said Monday that the aircraft could still be repaired. Lieutenant Colonel Enrico Canaya, however, said that the repairs on the airframe would take a long time and would be costly, which he based on the initial assessments of the chopper. “Initially, based on the damage to the airframe, it will be costly and will take time to recover,” Canaya said. “Costs and how long to repair is not yet determined.” During the take-off for the trip to Bukidnon from Marawi City , the escort chopper for the helicopter of Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla crashed leaving two people injured. Canaya said that the crashed Sokol would be transferred to an undisclosed and “secure” location. As part of its procedures, the manufacturers of the Sokol chopper have been notified of the crash. PAF obtained eight units of the Sokol choppers from Polish manufacturers PZL-Swidnik and British-Italian firm AugustaWestland for P2.8 billion. “Manufacturer is already notified through their local representative and they shall assist the PAF in the determination of the cause of the accident,” Canaya said. He added that the remaining seven Sokols would remain grounded throughout the investigation. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/628077/downed-sokol-chopper-repairable-says-air-force-official |

![]() ![]() photos by: AFPOCAAI Polish firm to assist in probe of helicopter crash By Alexis Romero (The Philippine Star) | Updated August 10, 2014 - 12:00am MANILA, Philippines - The Polish firm that supplied the Sokol helicopter that crashed in Marawi last Thursday has vowed to help the Philippine Air Force determine the cause of the accident. Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Enrico Canaya said yesterday aircraft manufacturer PZL-widnik S.A had been informed about the mishap, which injured two persons. Canaya admitted that the investigation might take time. The helicopter is still in the crash site, he said. “We are moving the craft to a secured place where investigators can further examine the (helicopter) parts for clues. I have no information yet where it will be moved,” he said. “Efforts were underway to determine the damage to properties caused by the accident,” he added. Canaya said the seven remaining Sokol helicopters in their inventory would remain grounded until the investigation is completed. The helicopter crashed at 2:23 p.m., a few seconds after it took off at the 103rd Infantry Brigade headquarters in Marawi City. The aircraft escorted another Sokol carrying Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and Interior Secretary Mar Roxas. It was carrying 4th Infantry Division chief Maj. Gen. Ricardo Visaya, 4th Infantry Division Inspector-General Col. Alexander Macario, five staff members of Gazmin and four crew members, including two pilots. Of the helicopter’s 11 passengers, only the gunner, Air Force S/Sgt. Darius Valdes, was hurt in the accident. Also injured was Santiago Savedra, a civilian who happened to be in the area when the helicopter crashed. The government bought eight Sokol combat utility helicopters from PZL-widnik S.A. for P2.8 billion. The package included ground support equipment, spare parts, support services and training for crew and maintainers. The first batch, which consisted of four helicopters, was delivered in February 2012 while the second batch, which consisted of two Sokols, arrived nine months later. The final batch composed of two helicopters was delivered in February last year. http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2014/08/10/1355876/polish-firm-assist-probe-helicopter-crash Edited by Flipzi, Wed Aug 13, 2014 1:04 am.
