Bell UH-1 Iroquois

The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (unofficially Huey) is a military helicopter powered by a single, turboshaft engine, with a two-bladed main rotor and tail rotor. The helicopter was developed by Bell Helicopter to meet the United States Army's requirement for a medical evacuation and utility helicopter in 1952, and first flew on 20 October 1956. Ordered into production in March 1960, the UH-1 was the first turbine-powered helicopter to enter production for the United States military, and more than 16,000 have been produced worldwide.

The first combat operation of the UH-1 was in the service of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. The original designation of HU-1 led to the helicopter's nickname of Huey. In September 1962, the designation was changed to UH-1, but "Huey" remained in common use. Approximately 7,000 UH-1 aircraft saw service in Vietnam.

In 1952, the Army identified a requirement for a new helicopter to serve as medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), instrument trainer and general utility aircraft. The Army determined that current helicopters were too large, underpowered, or were too complex to maintain easily. In November 1953, revised military requirements were submitted to the Department of the Army. Twenty companies submitted designs in their bid for the contract, including Bell Helicopter with the Model 204 and Kaman Aircraft with a turbine-powered version of the H-43. On 23 February 1955, the Army announced its decision, selecting Bell to build three copies of the Model 204 for evaluation, designated as the XH-40.

PINOY AVIATORS:

"In a span of 4-5 hours we almost made non-stop food relief drops to isolated barangays on the islands off Carles and Concepcion, stopping only to refuel and to eat lunch. granted, we didn't completely deliver to all the isolated communities, but at least for day 6, the larger communities where pumpboat access is limited or impossible could at least have some measure of hunger relief. we managed more or less 10 drops before the Air Force wrapped up for the day because their fuel supplies ran low."

Air Force chopper crashes in Leyte

(philstar.com) | Updated December 6, 2013 - 6:29pm

MANILA, Philippines - An Air Force helicopter involved in relief efforts in typhoon-hit areas crashed in Leyte Friday afternoon, security officials said.

No one died in the mishap, which occurred at around 3:30 p.m.

Air Force spokesman Col. Miguel Okol said the UH-1H #940 helicopter went down in area between the towns of Burauen and La Paz. Authorities are still determining what caused the crash.

Five crew members and three civilian passengers were on board the helicopter. At least two of the passengers were personnel of the Social Welfare department.

Supt. Erwin Portillo, community relations officer of the Leyte Provincial Police said all the passengers were safe but sustained injuries.

The injured passengers have been brought to the Burauen District Hospital for medical treatment.

The identities of the passengers have yet to be released.

“Aircraft accident investigation board has been convened to determine the cause of the incident. It may be due to environmental, mechanical or human factors,” Okol said.

"Aircraft accident investigation board has been convened to determine the cause of the incident. It may be due to environmental, mechanical, or human factors," Okol said.
