New Military Hardware for AFP

July 2013

The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division based in Jamindan, Capiz will boost its arsenal with the arrival of new military hardware from the national headquarters soon.

This was announced by Lt. Gen. Noel Abrigo Coballes, commanding general of the Philippine Army, during his recent visit in Panay to witness the turnover of command ceremony between Brig. Gen. Jonas Sumagaysay and Brig. Gen. Aurelio Baladad, who is now the commander of the 3rd ID.

Coballes said the military hardware procured by the national government from foreign suppliers is part of the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

These include KM-450 military trucks, mortar equipment, 37,000 units of M4 rifle that will replace the aging M16 rifles of the soldiers, 40,000 protection vests, 114 units of M113 war tanks, and 20 more additional
updated war tanks.

Coballes said that once these military procurement arrive before December this year, some of these will
be brought to the 3rd ID in Panay and other units of the Philippine Army operating throughout Western
Visayas.

The 3rd ID is the mother of all Army units operating in Panay and Negros islands, and the islandprovince
of Siquijor. (PNA) JBP/NLG/VLORQUIOLA

As per other sources, the M113 tanks will be purchased through the US' EDA Grant to Philippine Army last Dec-2012.

M113 with a a turret is that very vulnerable to enemy sniper fire

M113A1

The Republic of the Philippines will be receiving Military Hardware from aid to be provided by the United States of America. The M113A1 Armoured Personnel Carrier can be airlifted via C-130 cargo planes, the hardware is very versatile in fast moving manoevers & conventional terrain. The Philippine Army; the Land Forces in charge of external & internal defence is still facing a half century old socialist-communist insurgency along with Islamist-extremist terrorist groups in the archipelago. Most Military buffs with destructive criticism claim that the M113 will not be of good use since it can only sustain little amounts of small arms fire, let alone a shaped charged rocket attack from weapons wielded by the insurgents. The Republic of the Philippines is in dire need of budget for their Defence due to aggressive behavior by its neighboring countries. Perhaps the stop gap solutions such as the UH-1H Utility-Transport helicopters & the donations of hardware from allied countries will help stretch the capabilities of the Armed Forces/Defence Forces in dealing with any type of threat & crisis response. Phase 1 for the 2nd Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization-Programme is already undergoing fast paced paperwork, the first programme of the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Modernization failed to equip the whole Military with the necessary means for a flexible-credible defence due to political-economical instability, bureaucracy & corruption. In the end it all boils down the the Majority of people who are in charge of voting to elect leaders who can be responsible & capable in taking the task of restoring a sickly-unstable Republic. The need for the common man to outsource more credible information to find the better-qualified & capable should be realized.

The M113 will help a lot. But please, fix the faulty turret.

Snipers can pick out the gunner. Use fully enclosed turret as much as possible. Remember the ASG ambush on the Marines that killed a dozen. The ASG snipers were trying to hit the Marine guy inside the APC who had the door opened by a few inches only so he could stick his rifle out. The APC was trying to provide fire cover. He had to close the door because the sniper shots were accurate.

How much more for this kind of turret shown in the photo?

This is a blunder. DONT WASTE THE ARMOR. Sayang yung m113 kung ma-isnayp naman yung gunner. Make the M113 effective in providing fire cover.

Additional 142 Armored Vehicles for the PA's Mech Inf

With the Objective of the unit to be a reliable, capable and responsive armor unit in line with the Army Transformation Roadmap, various projects were initiated by the Commander of Mechanized Infantry Division, Maj. Gen. Nicanor E. Dolojan AFP through the auspices of the Armor Capability Development Office of the unit. Under the said Office are three main branches, namely; Doctrinal Development, Career Management and Materiel Development, all of which are currently full of activity with research and development in line with the Division’s two (2) major initiatives in ATR, the Armor Capability Development Program and Soldier of Excellence Program.

Material Development: Additional 142 Armored Vehicles for the Mech Division

There will be an additional 142 Armored Vehicles for the Mech Infantry Division which is expected to arrive before the end of 2014.The last time the unit was able to receive such number of Armored Vehicles was in the 90’s when 150 units of Simba Fighting Vehicles (SFV) were delivered. With the transformation of the unit from a Light Armor Division to a Mechanized Infantry Division, the unit immediately recognized the problem of having additional Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) to fill up the requirement of the current Mechanized Division TOE.

The 142 Armored Personnel Carriers will come in different configurations and divided in two batches. The first batch will consist of 114 units of M113 A2 sourced out through the US Excess Defense Article (EDA) and is expected to arrive before the year ends. The next batch will consist of 28 units of M113 A2, 14 of which will have a 76mm turret categorized as Fire Support Vehicle (FSV), another 10 units (4 units of 25mm and 6 units of 12.7mm) will be equipped with a Remote Control Weapons System (RWS) and another 4 units of Armored Recovery Vehicle.

Although bulk of the 75 billion Peso- budget for the modernization cup goes to the Navy and the Air Force, through the procurement of Fighter Jets and Navy Ships, Maj. Gen. Dolojan made sure that the Army will still get a chunk of the said budget by defending the need for the acquisition of additional armored vehicles. He likewise made sure that the vehicles to be procured will have a big impact in the battlefield. He had reservations in the initial plan to buy only a number of armored vehicles. “If we really want the Mechanized Divsion to be responsive and capable, we need more armor assets,” he reasoned out. He further argued that the vehicles to be procured must offer a big improvement in terms of capability with emphasis on the firepower department. This is the reason that a number of these units about to be acquired is armed with the Remote Control Weapon System (RCWS).

The MECHANIZED UNIT's Armored vehicle was also instrumental to the death of the 2 terrorist leaders.

It was used to monitor their movement and its secondary gun obliterated the teros.

The armored vehicle could have been the UT25, which is part of Elbit’s UT-series of RWS Turrets and uses a 25mm caliber cannon. It has a 7.62 mm caliber Machine Gun as a secondary weapon.
