PA gearing to be a more heavily-armed force

With the modernization of the country's military forces now on high gear, the Philippine Army is focusing on acquiring more heavy and potent weapons to bolster up its firepower capability.

This is demonstrated by the Army's latest acquisition of 100 brand-new units of 81mm Serbian-made mortars.

Capt. Anthony Bacus, PA spokesperson, said their newest mortar has bore length of 1,455mm and weighs 47.1 kilograms, including various accessories such as base plate and beech ring.

It also has a bipod weight of 13.5 kilograms.

Bacus said the Serbian-made 81mm mortar can fire, without sighting corrections, 20 rounds per minutes and 15 rounds with sight corrections.

He added that it can fire high explosive rounds and smoke shells at a range of 5,070 meters and illuminating mortar shells for 3,644 meters.

With these capabilities, the weapon can bring a decisive effect in the battlefield against possible enemies of the country.

Another weapon being eyed is a shore-based missile system worth P6.5 billion.

Patrick Velez, Department of National Defense vice chairman for the Bids and Awards Committee, said once acquired, the weapon will be placed under the control and supervision of the Army.

The shore-based missiles will be carried out through “limited source bidding."

Velez defines limited source bidding as a process where certain companies are invited to submit bids for a project.

No other details were given for security reasons. But sources stressed that these shore-based missile system could consist of 12 launchers, trailers and tracking systems and missiles that could be fired to hit ground and naval targets.

Another weapon system in the process of acquisition for the Army are 12 units of towed 155mm howitzers for P438,620,000.

This includes 240 rounds of 155mm high explosive and integrated logistic support.

The project is undergoing bidding at the DND.

The 155mm howitzers are used for saturation and bombardment roles.

It can also be used to break up human wave attacks in the battlefield.

The Army is known to operate 12 units of 155mm "Soltam" howitzers which are being used by the Israeli Defense Forces.

Should this project bear fruit, the Army's artillery unit will boast of 24 units of long-range 155mm howitzers.

PA has 273 artillery pieces

Not many people are aware of it but the Philippine Army (PA), which fields 10 infantry divisions, has an estimated 273 artillery pieces in its inventory.

This number does not include artillery pieces owned by the Philippine Marine Corps, Army spokesperson Capt. Anthony Bacus said.

Around 24 of these weapons are the heavy 155mm howitzers with the remaining guns consisting of various models of the 105mm howitzer, an artillery piece capable of being towed or tracked into combat.

These weapons are constantly being maintained and modernized to provide Army units with a relatively heavy punch.

Bacus said that six of these guns are grouped to make one battery.

He added that these guns serves as fire support and bombardment weapons of the PA.

The Army spokesperson also stressed that batteries of these guns are assigned to all of the PA’s infantry divisions.

However, he declined to comment on how many batteries each division possessed for reasons of security.
Earlier, the Department of National Defense announced that it is acquiring 12 units of towed 155mm howitzers for P438,620,000.

This includes 240 rounds of 155mm HE (high explosive) and integrated logistic support.

Army improves fire support capability with 14 units of M-113

The Philippine Army (PA) will be putting into service 14 M-113 “Bradley” APCs (armored personnel carriers) armed with 76mm cannons next year to improve its fire support capability.

Capt. Anthony Bacus, Army spokesperson, said the 76mm turrets of decommissioned Scorpion CVRT (combat vehicle reconnaissance tracked) will be installed on the M-113s, making the APCs speedy fire support vehicles.

“The turrets of decommissioned Scorpion CVTs will be installed on the M-113 platform and it will be fitted with modern fire control and thermal imaging equipment. Once it is completed, the 76mm cannon armed M-113s will be quite lethal,” he added.

The M-113 is a fully tracked armored personnel carrier manufactured by BAE Systems.

The vehicle was first fielded by United States Army’s mechanized infantry units in Vietnam in April 1962.

The PA is known to operate over 100 units of the M-113s.

The Scorpion CVRTs is classified as armored fighting vehicle or light tank and the Philippines is set to acquire 65 units.

Philippine Army now on 'medium term' phase of modernization program

The Philippine Army (PA) on Monday announced that its modernization program is now on its "medium term" phase.

Capt. Anthony Bacus, Army spokesperson, said that this will commence on 2014 and will end on 2016.

Initial stage of the PA modernization program took place during the previous administration and this includes acquisition of modern body armor, assault rifles, and armored personnel carriers.

However, he cannot give details on the particular projects, involving this phase, as the group that will plan the acquisitions are still to convene.

"The concerned offices cannot yet give the details because talks are still to convene for these projects," Bacus stressed.

But the PA spokesperson disclosed that these programs will involved improvement on firepower, communications, and night fighting capability of the Army.

"(This has) an estimated fund of P8 billion," he added.

This sum includes acquisition of a shore-based missile system worth P6.5 billion.

Patrick Velez, Department of National Defense vice chair for the bids and awards committee, said once acquired, the weapon will be placed under the control and supervision of the Army.

The shore-based missiles will be carried out through “limited source bidding".
No other details were given for security reasons.
