Since Near is starting over fresh we are going to be taking ideas as to the universe that NEAR will be set in. Originally we where set in a post-apocolyptic galaxy where the numerous races where starting a new.

However, since NEAR is being re-born We want your input as to the new universe we are trying to create... How would you envision the Galaxy in NEAR?

I personally would like it to be post apocalyptic, but instead of starting anew, I propose that our nations were actually relatively isolated, and suffocated by the influence of two or three massive precursor empires who nuked and blasted each other to oblivion.
Finally, with them out of the way, we can finally expand and make our own stamp on the galaxy.
This would allow for so many plot possibilities; super weapons, artifacts, ancient temples...

Except three super-empires occupying an entire galaxy would make post-apocalyptic mean every planet is a wasteland....

Although it would let me explain why my planet is artificial.

I would imagine that most of the current nations would be start-ups that were too primitive to take part or grizzled veterans with the scars to prove it. Either way, nations would probably start out rather isolated.
Also: I'm planning to run with the out-of-galaxy arrival scenario, I hope that's still okay...If so it could in theory serve as a nice proxy to "who are these precursors you speak of" - essentially the watson of any plot involving precursors, though others could obviously also fill that role.

I'm not so sure if we should go for the whole post-apocalyptic route for the entire Galaxy seeing how large the place could be, if possible I'd love to see that perhaps limited to a Quadrant of the Galaxy.

I foresee a great variety in civilizations around here so I'd expect some could be just starting up and new to the galactic scene, others would be ancient and decadent, others fighting for survival and others fulfilling all kinds of niches.

Mind you - if I did have a piece of advise I'd really like to see no extra-galactic nations or species unless it was something major, there's simply no point to them since you might as well have came from another star system.

the current acceptable limit to nations regarding extra-galactic origins is one may be located in Dark-space provided they are still on the map.

That makes a lot of sense, would also fill up a lot of those vacant sections in each corner. Also, is there a messaging system here like NS? I've got a couple of ideas for my own civ.

What I meant was a wormhole-esque event transporting the entire system from some random galaxy to somewhere in this one, rather than originating from dark space. Is that acceptable?
