Depending on the particulars we decide on for the backdrop for NEAR, I have an idea that has been nagging at me for some time now that I would like to try and implement. It is set around the search for some artifact of immense power and unfathomable age, with the power to do something truly amazing. What exactly it is and does will be in tune with the universe backstory, and in the end the item will likely have to be destroyed to keep one race from becoming the only race to be able to do the one cool thing the object does. The adventure is the journey, not the prize, right? As this item is mythological in power and status, legitimate governments and galactic powers will very likely shun this item as a fairy tale and laugh at any attempts to lobby them to recover it. Hence, it will fall to the rogues, treasure hunters, adventurers, scientists, and the like of our individual races and societies to track this item down. This can be done individually, or as a group effort. It is even possible to deploy a single ship with a diverse crew and use the opportunity to showcase and portray the unique culture of your species and how it interacts and clashes with your allies, however uneasy that alliance might be due to past histories between individuals or whole cultures. The core concept of this RP is very malleable and can be twisted to suit any number of differing scenarios depending on who is involved and how they came to be involved. The only 'rule' I'd like to enforce is that no species field a fleet to track this item down. It's simply unlikely that any legitimate government would make the personnel and material commitment to hunt down what is quite likely simply a legend. I would like to take it as far as banning government backed military forces as well, but they can be allowed within reason. For example a scout team is embedded with an explorer unit or a government agent from an agency that doesn't exist includes himself somehow on your science vessel; but I'd prefer this to be a civilian-fronted effort for the most part. They're welcome to have shiny toys and high-end tech, within reason, but no overt or grand governmental backing beyond the promise of a victory parade after their triumphant return. We must keep things interesting for the players as well as the readers, and always having the exact tool on hand makes for boring story telling. For those of you groaning at the lack of epic fleet combat, there is always the possibility of going to war over the fragments or data or what-have-you that remains after the item's destructions the end of the RP. Any interest? If there's none here I'll likely troll NS as well. |

It was simply one of many places we could take this. Once we hammer out what the 'thing' is and what it does I'll get a thread up and you're welcome to elaborate from there. Ideally it's a leftover from an unspeakably advanced precursor species. Something that distorts/manipulates time? Obviously it'll get used once to show what it does, then accidentally or deliberately be destroyed. As far as space battles go, there is no feasible reason for fleets to clash over what is widely accepted to be galactic legend, at least until it is found. Then you're more than welcome to clash over the pieces. ![]() I don't want this to devolve into a galactic pissing contest and reduce the story to a numbers game. It's fine in the background, but not at the forefront of the story. For now, fleet-clashing will be a post discovery thing. @Canuck: We'll have to discuss this elsewhere. I.E. Not in my story boarding thread. You know how I am about thread organization.

That's where the lack of epic space battles are. I mean, can we get some atmo-frigate battles going or no? Edited by Canuckland, Nov 4 2013, 08:15 AM.

There is potential for ship to ship combat between exploration vessels. Although since this device was meant to be man portable, most of the action will occur on the ground. |

I dont see why having atmo-battles would be a no-no... I actually would bet on them becoming more and more frenquent as news of this device spread! |

The device isn't meant to be a game changer, so it'll be around for all of give minutes before something happens to it. There shouldn't be enough time for news to spread, but a follow-up might be called for where the various governments or what have you, race to recover the remnants of the device. Sound fair? You're welcome to clash with one another on a small scale. The goal is to keep player commitments small. I can see battle groups suddenly warping in the moment the first shot is fired. That's my only concern. |
