I thought it'd be neat to make a thread recapping our inaugural draft. Feel free to discuss how you felt your team turned out, who had the best (or worst) drafts, etc. (PS - Was going to put this under League Discussion but didn't have permission to) |

I HATE my first two picks, Rask and Kessel. I expected a goalie run when two of the first three picks were Price and Varly, and that goalie run just never really materialized. Then I felt like I had to take Kessel to get an "elite" point producer. Those two come out to 17.5 million combined salary. I had Tavares typed into the reply box for the 4th overall pick due mostly to his salary, but changed my mind to Rask. Could have had Tavares and Cory Schneider for 10.5 million instead, and saved myself 7 million bucks. But hey, I feel like I have the best goalie in the league on my team, and for him to be the third goalie selected I can't complain too much. I kinda got stuck in between when all of those young guys started flying off the board. I had planned on drafting to compete, then got sucked into looking at some prospects because that's kinda my bread and butter and I think it might have left me a little short of really pushing for the title. The massive salaries with my first two picks didn't help, either. I also wanted to go really cheap on defense so drafted to fill out my forward group first, and didn't react fast enough when some of the defenders I wanted started going off the board. Jones, Hamilton, Trouba, Gudas, Dillon, Gudbranson, Petrovic....missed on all of them ugh. I still like my defense, it's just more on the prospect side than active and now I'm hoping guys like Zadorov, Clendening, Oleksiak, and Borowiecki can crack their NHL lineups this season. Anyway, I'm gonna go a lot more in depth on my roster in a day or two. I'd really love to see some good posts in this thread with people sharing how they feel about their teams. I might even sit down and do some scouting reports or write ups on the other teams. |

I'm pretty happy with how my team turned out. Up front I have young established players like Patrick Kane, Duchene and Carter plus younger guys with huge potential like Monahan, Granlund, Nieto and Brock Nelson. I don't love my depth up front but it's certainly enough to be serviceable. I do however, LOVE my defence. Doughty and Fowler are both young and among the best in the league. Markov is still putting up good numbers at his age and Delo Zotto, Demers, Sbisa and McBain are have good potential. In goal Jimmy Howard is good but not great, but I think he was the 19th goalie taken so I'm pretty happy with where I got him. Jake Allen is a few years away but looks to be a keeper. My prospects are probably my weakest area. I do have Mark Pysyk, Ty Rattie, Eric Comrie and Hudson Fasching who I'm really high on, but after that it's a lot of higher risk guys and safe one with low ceilings. Kind of the opposite of my NFHA team where I'm prospect rich but lack depth after Crosby and Stamkos. |

I'm actually quite pleased with my defense corps and goalie depth and how it turned out, but I do think my forward depth isn't as strong as it could have been. I love my defense as I feel I'm loaded for now and the future with a core of Karlsson, Trouba, Ceci, Larsson and Spurgeon. Plus, I like Klefbom and Abeltshauser as prospects. Lehtonen gives me a starter on what I think is a lock playoff team fro the next 5 years, and Khudobin can fill in should he get injured. I also got my sleeper goalie Neuvirth in the 33rd round. My forwards are where I'm not happy and had the most missteps in my mind. Kopitar was the right pick, and I'm happy I jumped on Scheifele, Drouin and Pearson early, but the prospect run definitely took my focus on getting the best forwards. I took Vanek right after the Tampa series ended when he was on fire, and then he crashed and burned. Should have taken Gallagher, Boedker or Hanzal but oh well, I still really like Vanek. Jarnkrok I took earlier then I planned to because of the youth run and I missed out on another veteran forwards I loved who went off the board shortly after. I really like my prospect depth, but I really hate my Petersson (signed to play in the KHL 2 days later) and Beach picks looking back. Should have taken Seidenberg over Beach and signed Cody. I'm also not sure I should have nabbed Cammalleri and Doan in the 19th and 20th and instead focused on getting two more young guys I really wanted. There was also about a million times early on that I cursed the no trading draft picks, as I kept seeing guys go in rounds 10-15 that I really wanted and would have gladly moved a 7th or 8th round choice to nab a couple extra picks there. I also hate myself for not drafting Subban over Karlsson. I just couldn't justify the unknown, and the fact that I think he'll make an extra $1-2M a year more then Karlsson. I wanted to though. |

Well, I ended up taking a few more days vacation when the draft began - which led to me ultimately forgetting about it completely as a result of too much sun and rum. #noregrets So the mod group had to auto-pick my first two picks. I have full faith in Pazz and Taves so I'm not too bummed out about that. I'm okay with the Hank pick in the 2nd round. Not as thrilled about the Pavelski number one pick. I would have probably taken Getz or Hall there. Not complaining though. If Jumbo Joe and Marleau get shipped out, Pavs will be leaned on even more the next few seasons. And he has a nice contract. I'm pretty happy with my next few rounds of picks. I really wanted Drouin because I'm a big fan of him watching him develop in Hali and feel like he's the next Patrick Kane. Considering how quick the young guys were going I was happy to get Barkov at 96 overall. Picked Bjugstad not long after and hope those two can be the staple of my team for a long time. If they can afford, the Cats will be at least a playoff team in the East soon and for awhile. The contract sucks, but if Eric Staal (round 10) can return to form, that pick is going to look really nice. My prospect pool is filled with guys that have a real shot of becoming regular NHLers and will eventually fill in at least as depth. I think I managed to grab a few underated guys through the mid-late stretch of the draft, including Erne, Ikonen, Salomaki. I've got three great D prospects in Risto, Pouliot, and Pokka. If Jarry can live up to the hype and eventually replace MAF in time for Hank's eventual decline, I should be okay at G (high hopes!). |

I generally liked my draft a lot but like others, my team has its weaknesses. First the positives: At forward, I am stacked with high producing, proven veterans, many of whom are still in their peak years: Nick Backstrom & Claude Giroux on the same team...are you kidding me...awesome If you then consider that I was able to also add in the early rounds,Byfuglien, Lucic, Nicushkin etc, lets just say I was very pleased. And then the huge run on top prospects commenced, and I was very tempted to follow suit but I went veteran instead, I'll try and compete hard for the next couple of years then I'm going to have to do some re-building but for 2015 & 2016, this squad should be very competitive. I also added Datsyuk & Ladd so I'm really stacked at Forward. My defense is not as good as Taves, his is sick, but Barrie, Sekera, Dillon, Edler, Kulikov & Michael Stone is very respectable and I have Justin Braun & Robert Bortuzzo in reserve, I should be able to more than hold my own. OK Now, to the weakness, I have no starting depth. Because of my choice to pick guys like Datsyuk in later rounds(and there huge veteran cap hits), I have effectively 2 guys in my reserve pool for forwards and I have a number of guys who are, lets just say, not terribly durable, at least historically and no cap room left to play with, less than $5M. I know this isn't going to be enough so I really need some of the AHL guys I drafted to step up and make their big teams or I am going to fall to pieces by mid-year when I have 4-5 guys constantly on IR and no one to take their spots. Finally, I took Mike Smith at Goaltender, I waited intentionally on goalie and like Smith but I do need Phoenix to be decent this year and to do that, they will need to find some help on offense in a really bad free agent year for offense when they are seemingly unwilling to pay a guy like Vrbata, who is like the only proven scorer they have, we'll see what happens but I'm worried that Smith could be really good and Phoenix could be really bad offensively and he stands on his head and has a losing record. Anyway, I really enjoyed the draft and I'm looking forward to the season, hit me up with those trade offers. cheers, ny rangers |
