| Welcome to the Navy Field Spriting Project. We rose after the decline of the NGP, which succeeded its predecessor TBNF. We have several sprites by both teams and we still work on sprites of our own! Hop in, join in the community, and add some style to your game! This howto deals with removing a black background (taken in NF as transparency) so you can splice images into other images without annoying black borders. I hate to single people out, if you know who made these, but what you're doing is an example of something we can do a better job of. Instead of this: ![]() You can have something more like this: Let's begin. This howto is optimized for Gimp, and the version I have is 2.6. It should be similar if not identical to the way it is in Gimp 2.8. I've never done this in any other picture editor so it's up to you to figure out the corresponding actions in whatever you're using. From the screenshot below, you can tell I already have my files in place. I have extracted all 36 body images of the Essex into a folder, and in this folder I have the two aircraft sprites I need. The sprites for Dauntless, Helldiver, and the Corsair are exactly the same, and I already had the TBF Avenger sprites extracted for the Ticonderoga project. ![]() So I'll open up my Essex, image 0. (pointing directly north) ![]() Next, with my aircraft sprites ready to be imported, I press ctrl+alt+O to open the desired sprite as a new layer. I want to have each aircraft at an angle as compared to the deck, like I did in my Ticonderoga project. It just looks cooler that way, to me at least :P. Also, make sure the aircraft file is [name][number]_002. If the last three digits are 000 or 001, the plane will be leaning down. I don't know about you, but the last I heard when a plane was leaning downwards on a flight deck it was having arrestor cable problems or crashed on landing. If the digits are 003 or 004, then the aircraft would be leaning as if it's about to fall off the ship (pointing upwards) and we don't want that either. For this project, they need to be leveled out, so the last three digits of all aircraft components must be 002. ![]() So using the Open as Layers function, I am loading an F4U Corsair onto the carrier. ![]() Before we can get rid of the obstructive blackground, we need to do a few things first. Make sure you have your "Layers, Channels, Paths" window open. If it isn't open, find it by clicking Windows > Recently Closed Docks. With the Layers dock, you need to right-click the layer you brought in. In this case the layer is down_03_0002.bmp. In the large dropdown menu that appears, look for "Add Alpha Channel" and click it. ![]() The blue arrow notes the checkered background. The layer thumbnail in the Layer dock will now have a little black box, maybe with something inside the black box, somewhere in a sea of gray boxes. This pattern means that area is actually transparent. If you see this, then you know that you have successfully set the alpha to be on. So next, we need to prepare our tool for weeding out the black area. In the screenshot below, the Fuzzy Select tool has been selected inside the Toolbox. At the bottom of the Toolbox you'll find more detailed information about the Fuzzy Select tool - you're looking for something labeled Threshold. By default this value will be set to 15, as shown in the screenshot below. ![]() So set the threshold value to 0. ![]() Finally, with the fuzzy select tool selected, click the black area around the plane. It will be highlighted with this weird animated dashed line. Hit the Delete key and the blackground will be banished, allowing you to now move the planes around without the blackground getting in the way! ![]() Any questions or comments? Post em as replies. Awesome thanks for the guide Mech, I'm using Photoshop so I'm pretty sure the options should be similar. |
