It was drizzling on the way to Boroughbridge but it was fine with wet roads when I set off and there was a quite a strong northerly wind. On the way out there were two very rough sections of highway where the surface had been stripped by rotating toothed wheels, pending re-surfacing. The surface on the road up to the bridge over the carriageways at Knayton was very pot-holed. My bottle (mounted on my bars) started to work loose so after I had taken a drink I pressed down on the empty cage to try to increase the tension. However the bars I had fitted midweek rotated on the handlebars, pointing down. I had mounted the cage with the top of the bottle facing forward and the new downward angle made the bottle more likely to fall out. I had to keep pushing it back into place during the next lap. After taking my third drink at the second turn at Knayton my bottle fell out on the bumpy surface, just after I had replaced it, . Luckily I had taken my last drink before the last 13 or so miles. I didn't stop to pick up the bottle. Then there was just the wind assisted ride to the finish.

My time: 2-02-58. Winner Keith Murray 1-46-38. I won the V60-69 category. My time is a new Club age record for age 67.

Sorry, I forgot to check Michael Cox's time. Edit: Michael Cox 2-18-06

I reckon that you 'engineered' your mechanical problems Dave so that you would still retain your 66 year old record as well by 7 seconds!?

I am always concerned about overtightening bolts when compressing a carbon item - in this case handlebars. I went for a 10 mile test ride with a full bottle yesterday with no problems but roads weren't as bumpy. I didn't expect the stripped surface sections on the main road or the state of the road to the Knayton turn.
