Yesterday I decided to go to the Manchester Velodrome this afternoon (Friday) to see some of the various heats - Bradley Wiggins was down to ride the individual Pursuit. This morning on the British Cycling website it announced - not as a big headline I might say - that Bradley Wiggins would not afterall be riding - he has a cold - so decided not to bother. However a quick change of mind at 10 to 12 and off at 12 by bus - train - metro - all free on a Manchester 'Bus Pass' - one benefit of living in Bolton - and being Old! At the Velodrome kiosk they caught up with me - £8 entry fee Bus Pass or not!! - there were about 120 total watching on my headcount so they didn't take much cash in any case this afternoon. At least the bar was open so I spent my normal 'petrol money' on a couple of pints in the 'Boardman Bar' - no driving today! There were some big names in action such as our double '10' winner Joanna Rowsell Shand - after her marriage to Kevin Shand's son Daniel - and Laura Trott and Katie Archibald - and Emily Kay was not far behind - anyone know whether Emily is the daughter of our ex. member Linda Gornall and Ian Kay?? Jason Kenny was winner of one of the Keirins - one Keirin heat finished in a masive pile-up with 4 coming down at around 40 mph. If you have never been to the Velodrome it is well worth a visit - Been many time in the past but the only time I have been in the last couple of years was mid-week twice to collect the Christine Goodfellow '10' Trophy that Joanne Rowsell won in our Open event - it was good that both times she took the Trophy home. Should be better there tomorrow and Sunday - the girl on the kiosk said they still have tickets available for all the sessions. |
