What is Defending?

In NationStates, the practice of raiding & defending is as old as the game itself. NationStates was created as a political simulator over 10 years ago, but it didn't take players long to figure out that they could crash other regions and take them over by sending nations with World Assembly status to endorse each other. This process eventually became known as raiding and moderators quickly established a set of rules that banned the practice of griefing - raiding regions and then immediately ejecting and banning the entire region.

Moderators decided in 2006 to introduce influence, a system that granted individual nations power accumulated over time to determine the strength they had if they won the delegacy of the region they resided in. For example, a delegate that had been in a region for a long time with many endorsements would have greater power to eject and/or ban nations from a region. This system made the ban on griefing redundant, but raiders began using sleeper nations that would sit in regions for long periods of time undercover before being activated and suddenly used as a point for a raid.

Defenders have been tasked for the last 10 years to combat these raiders and prevent them from taking over and either destroying or colonizing regions. NationStates is unique in the sense that raiding has become an accepted part of the game and the majority of players would agree NationStates could never exist at the level of popularity it does without allowing people to raid regions.

Defenders have declined in power and numbers over the past couple of years however, and raiders have taken power in the game. It is time for the tides to turn and for the golden age of defending to begin.
