Sochi 2014: Russia top medal table as Olympics come to an end February 2014 ![]() SOCHI | Russian Federation -- Host nation Russia finished on top of the medal table as the 22nd Winter Olympics came to a close in Sochi on Sunday after 17 days of competition. International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach officially closed the Games during an extravagant 130-minute ceremony. South Korea were given the Olympic flag as Pyeongchang hosts the 2018 Games, while Britain equaled their best Winter Olympics performance with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. The build-up to the Games was overshadowed by concerns over the threat of a terrorist attack and the impact of protests against Russian anti-gay legislation. But Bach said Russia and the Black Sea resort city of Sochi had "delivered all that it promised" and risen above the concerns to deliver an impressive Olympics. "These were excellent Games that may lead to the reversal of some criticism of the Russian organisers that preceded the Olympics," he said. Bach used his speech at the closing ceremony in the Fisht Stadium to emphasise Olympic values. "By living together under one roof in the Olympic Village you send a powerful message from Sochi to the world, that of a society of peace, tolerance and respect," he said. "I appeal to everybody implicated in confrontation, oppression and violence to act on this Olympic message of dialogue and peace." Russian President Vladimir Putin, who watched the ceremony from the stands and made several appearances at the Games to oversee the nation's investment of £600m in elite sport, did not get his wish of a gold medal in the ice hockey. But victory for the four-man Russian bobsleigh team gave the host nation their 13th gold medal of the Games - and 33 medals in total - to ensure they topped the medal table, emulating Canada's achievement four years ago. It marked a stunning turnaround from the 2010 Vancouver Games where Russia won just 15 medals, including three golds, to finish 11th overall - their worst ever result. "People kept asking me whether I believed Russia could do as well as Canada did in Vancouver and I didn't believe it," said Russian Alexander Legkov, who won gold in the 50km cross-country. "Now this is our pride, it's wonderful. What could be better than ending the Olympics with a gold medal and helping Russia top the medal table?" The Games cost £30bn, making Sochi the most expensive Olympics ever, and featured a record 2,800 athletes from 88 countries, with 12 new events added to attract young audiences. But there were also six failed drugs tests - five more than in Vancouver - as the most extensive anti-doping programme in Winter Olympics history saw a record 2,453 tests carried out. The host nation's problem with stray dogs has been well documented and struck a chord with many competing athletes. Many have adopted dogs, while US ice hockey player David Backes is working on plans to open a shelter back home and bring the strays over. Organizers made a joke at their own expense in the closing ceremony as dancers formed themselves into four rings and a small clump in a nod to the malfunction in the opening ceremony, when one of the Olympic rings failed to open. For Britain, Sochi marked a record-equaling Winter Olympics, their tally of four medals matching their haul in the inaugural 1924 Games in Chamonix, France. In doing so, the 56-strong team surpassed the medal target of three set by UK Sport, which awards funding, to raise hopes of a financial boost ahead of the 2018 Games. Snowboarder Jenny Jones became the first Briton to win a medal on snow with bronze in the slope-style before Lizzy Yarnold won gold in the skeleton to emulate Amy Williams's success in 2010. The women's curlers then won bronze and the men's team silver, skip David Murdoch winning a first medal in his third Games. The total could have been greater still, with the men's four-man bobsleigh team and snowboarder Jamie Nicholls coming close to a podium finish, and short track speed skater Elise Christie suffering the misfortune of three disqualifications. Britain's athletes now must wait until June to find out whether they will be funded for the next Olympic cycle. Great Britain chef de mission Mike Hay told BBC Sport: "I am proud of the team's achievements. We have competed to the utmost of our ability. "I'm delighted with everybody, not just with the medals, but with the number of finals and top-half finishes we have had. "We have won four medals, which sets a new standard for us. We have come a long way from Vancouver 2010 where we won just the one medal. "The team has a young profile and I believe we can do even better in Pyeongchang in 2018." South Korea, with a budget of £7bn for the 2018 Games, will become only the second Asian country to host a Winter Olympics after Japan staged the Games at Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998. _____ Source |

WORLD CUP 2014: no surprises in Group A July 2014 ![]() RIO DE JANEIRO | Brazil -- Success at the Confederations Cup last summer has raised hopes of a record-extending sixth World Cup triumph on home soil for the Brazilian team. And as was expected the Brazilians had little difficulties reaching the last 16, with only Croatia keeping them tied to a goalless draw in the first game. Despite this setback the Brazilian team seemed unmoved and achieved victories against the Mexicans and against Cameroon. The second seat int he group was however a far more interesting contest, and Croatia achieved to bring home one point after their meetign with Brazil, which could have been decisive, if only the Croatian team would have managed to win at least one game, however against the indomitable lions they were unable to turn their superiority on the field into a victory and against Mexico it seemed the team had lost all hope of reaching the last 16, as a result Croatia only managed to accumulate three points, and gave Cameroon the ticket to the last 16. Mexico despite the presence of their star striker Hernandez managed to achieve only a single point, in what will be considered an extremely disappointing World Cup for the team. The signs were already not to positive, as the Mexicans needed the intercontinental play-offs to qualify for the tournament, but the result against New Zealand gave them some hope. However the opponents in Brazil were of far better quality than the Kiwis and as a result the Mexicans accumulated only a single point after three matches.
Brazil 0-0 Croatia Mexico 0-2 Cameroon Brazil 2-0 Mexico Croatia 2-2 Cameroon Cameroon 0-1 Brazil Mexico 1-1 Croatia |

Dutch do not survive group stage July 2014 SAU PAULO | Brazil -- Many tipped Spain as the likely winner of this group and this was indeed the case. During the opening match, a replay of the World Cup 2010 final, the Spanish team beat the Dutch on nearly every element of the game. The only Dutch players that managed to perform on their regular level were Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie, however the Spanish clockwork just was too much for "Oranje" and the team lost the game with a decisive 3-1. After this Spain had some misfortune and was unable to exploit several large changes to bring home the victory against Chile, while the match against Australia ended in a sound 2-0 victory for the Spanish. The Dutch, despite the setback after the first match, managed to win against Australia. The game saw the Dutch dominate the field and score two goals, while they did not concede any goals, due to a sturdy defense, a defense that was not present against the Spanish. In the last match the Dutch needed at least a draw against Chile, and they ultimately achieved this, however many believed that a victory for Chile would have done the balance of the game right. However as Chile managed to win from Australia, the Dutch managed finished third in the group and as a result will head home earlier than planned. Chile, despite a good qualification run and the good combination of experienced campaigners like Claudio Bravo, Pablo Contreras and Jorge Valdivia with exciting younger players including Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez and Fiorentina's Matias Fernandez, was unable to turn their dominance on the field into goals and as a result managed only won win after three games. However due to their draw against Spain, Chile did manage to come in as second in the group, and as a result sent the Dutch home early. The Socceroos highest goal for this World Cup was to go beyond the group stage, however this proved to be too much for the Australians. Against the Spanish and Dutch they were simply the lesser team and despite a lot of luck and a sturdy defense the Australians were also unable to hold a draw against Chile.
Spain 3-1 Netherlands Chile 2-1 Australia Australia 0-2 Netherlands Spain 2-2 Chile Australia 0-2 Spain Netherlands 1-1 Chile |

Despite absence of Falcao, Colombia goes through to last 16 July 2014 ![]() BRASILIA | Brazil -- Despite the absence of Falcao, the Colombian team managed to accumulate seven points after its three meetings in the group stage. The only team to keep them at a draw were "the Elephants". The low number of goals in this group, despite the presence of many top strikers, was what surprised many analysts. The Japanese did not manage to reach the next stage and their performance looked at lot like last summer's Confederations Cup, were the team lost all three meetings. Ivory Coast managed to penetrate the sturdy defense of the Greeks twice, and as a result of this victory the team managed to achieve the second place in the group. Its opponents during the last match only managed to secure a single point, when the Greeks kept Japan to 1-1. The problem Greece faced during qualification again became apparent during the World Cup itself. Goals have been the major problem and the pressure was on the likes of Samaras and veteran Dimitris Salpingidis to deliver up front. Both however lacked to fulfill the expectations and Greece managed to score only two goals.
Colombia 1-0 Greece Ivory Coast 0-0 Japan Colombia 0-0 Ivory Coast Japan 1-1 Greece Japan 0-1 Colombia Greece 1-2 Ivory Coast |

Italy and Uruguay continue, as England can go home July 2014 BRASILIA | Brazil -- With very high hopes the British went to Brazil, however the team lost its first match against Italy, who with a magnificent Pirlo, outclassed the English. When Uruguay, at the hand of Luis Suarez, managed to tie the game against the British, the Brits became dependent on the outcome of the match between Uruguay and Italy. While they managed to win against Coasta Rica, it was again Luis Suarez who scored for Uruguay and tied the game between Uruguay and Italy. As a result of this draw the Brits new their World Cup ambitions had faded. Italy managed to win their games against both England and Costa Rica, while the game against Uruguay ended in a tie. As a result of this performance the Italians keep their dream to equal the Brazilian number of World Cups wins. The group stage in Group D has seen one man turn into a legend, while he was already considered one of the most colorful players of the game, Luis Suarez his performance during this stage made him all but immortal in his homeland. Two important goals by Suarez have granted the second place int he group to Uruguay, who will now be able to continue to the last 16. The World Cup for Costa Rica will most likely be remembered with the spirit of the Olympics in mind "participating is more important than winning," as the team only scored a single goal and had to concede ten. With zero points after three games, their World Cup has now ended.
Uruguay 4-1 Costa Rica England 0-1 Italy Uruguay 2-2 England Italy 3-0 Costa Rica Italy 1-1 Uruguay Costa Rica 0-3 England |

United States does not survive group stage, as Argentina displays form July 2014 ![]() RIO DE JANEIRO | Brazil -- In the remaining groups there were few surprises. In group G, it was already expected that the United States would have a difficult time. This became apparent as the Americans failed to win from any of their opponents and were only able to keep Portugal to a draw, but this most likely was the result of a minor injury that kept Ronaldo on the bench. After three matches the Americans only had a single point and were left completely without a chance to progress into the next stage. Something Argentina and Germany managed to achieve quite easily. In the other groups Belgium and Russia managed to advance to the next stage, at the expense of South Korea and Algeria. While Bosnia and Herzegovina will accompany Argentina in the next round, after they had beaten Nigeria with 0-1. France and Ecuador are the countries that will complete the last 16 round, after the young Swiss team failed to impress.
Switzerland 1-2 Ecuador France 1-0 Honduras Switzerland 0-0 France Honduras 1-3 Ecuador Honduras 0-2 Switzerland Ecuador 1-2 France

Brazil and Uruguay to meet in the quarter finals July 2014 ![]() RIO DE JANEIRO | Brazil -- As Chile walked onto the pitch yet another meeting with Brazi, the team knew that they would have a difficult task ahead of them. The Brazilians aside from having the homefield advantage, also displayed a good form during the group stage and all signs were that the Brazilians would again be in good shape against Chile. Despite their low FIFA ranking, Brazil were seen by many as the favorites for the win. Chile, despite great opportunities for Sánchez and Vargas, were however unable to beat the Brazilian defense and the only goal fell on the other side, ensuring that once again Brazil will be the end point for Chile at this tournament. Uruguay, headed by an unchained Luis Suarez, managed to achieve a win over Colombia, that clearly missed their goalscorer Falcao. The Colombian team was unable to get into the game and as a result of this will not advance into the next round. In the other matches France send home Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it was Ribery who carried out the sentence by scoring the 2-1. Germany had little difficulties with Russia, although the score would have made people belive something else, however the Germans were in complete control of the game and only a minor error resulted in Russia scoring the 2-1 in the last ten minutes, however despite the Russian team pressing for the equalizer, they never came close to this. Spain met Cameroon and the game ended in a victory for the reigning champions. At the same time Italy met Ivory Coast, and despite the offensive threat posed by "the Elephants", the "Azzurri" defense stood firmly and two of the famous Italian outbreaks resulted in goals by Mario Balotelli and Daniele De Rossi. Argentina continued its good streak and managed to win against Ecuador, while Belgium managed to win against Portugal, despite the presence of Ronaldo. The Belgium defense stood firmly against the threat posed by Ronaldo and marvelous performances from both Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen ensured that Portugal did not head towards the dressing rooms and lead the game during half time. In the last fifteen minutes it was Kevin Mirallas who managed to score for the "Red Devils" and as a result guarantee the advance into the quarter finals. Brazil 1-0 Chile Colombia 0-3 Uruguay France 2-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina Germany 2-1 Russia Spain 2-1 Cameroon Italy 2-0 Ivory Coast Argentina 2-1 Ecuador Belgium 1-0 Portugal |

Germany on their way to the finals? July 2014 ![]() RIO DE JANEIRO | Brazil -- In the quarter finals Brazil met Uruguay, and many anticipated a fantastic game. This turned out to be the case, and attractive football from both sides was displayed. Uruguay, led by Suarez and Cavani, had several good opportunities to take the lead, however the team failed to score and despite the impressive attacking depth led of Uruguay, Brazil stayed alert. The Brazilians exploited the one weakness of Colombia, namely its aging central defense. After fifty minutes of football it was Neymar who opened the score. When the second goal fell in the last minutes of the game, it was decided and despite a great appearance of Uruguay the team has not reached beyond the quarter finals. Three times world champion Germany met France, in a game that was to be as exciting as the game between Brazil and Uruguay. The french under the guidance of Ribery gave their all, but were unable to stop the overwhelming German quality. Goals by Mario Gómez and Miroslav Klose resulted in a comfortable lead for the Germans, and only when Karim Benzema scored on behalf of France the excitement returned, however it proved to be too little too late. In a Mediterranean encounter Spain and Italy were to face each other in the third quarter final. The Spanish team was considered to be the favorite and fulfilled this role with flair. Mario Balotelli, who played good matches prior to this one, was clearly having difficulties with the sturdy Spanish defenders and was unable to make a difference. However in a stroke of brilliance the Italian striker managed to free himself from his two Spanish guards and with a devastating shot on goal gave Italy the edge. After this the Italian defenders closed the door and resorted to the kick and rush tactic. It took until the last minutes of the game for Spain to score, but then out of the blue there was Pedro, who with a nicely placed header scored the equalizer for Spain. As a result of this the game went in to overtime. In the second half of the overtime it was again Pedro who managed to exploit the small room he was given and score the 2-1 for Spain, ending the Italian dream for another World Cup title. While Belgium made a good impression during the previous games, its major flaw became apparent during the quarter final match with Argentina. Where the Argentinians could count on a very strong team overall, the Belgian weakness lay in the absence of really good strikers. Against the veterans of Argentina, it became clear that Belgium still has to develop and mature to reach the highest levels of football in the world. The Belgium team is however still young and there is absolutely no doubt that it is a very capable formation, however against players like Messi, Sergio Agüero, Maxi Rodríguez and Gonzalo Higuaín they need to grow a little more. Brazil 2-0 Uruguay France 1-2 Germany Spain 2-1 Italy Argentina 2-0 Belgium |

Brazil takes it to the finals July 2014 ![]() RIO DE JANEIRO | Brazil -- With the majority of the base of players for “Die Mannschaft” coming from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, two clubs that have dominated European club football in 2013, it is needless to say that Germany has a top class squad. With players of the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, Marco Reus, Mesut Ozil, Manuel Neuer in their ranks the Germans were expected to go far, and even are considered to be one of the favorites for the title. In the semi finals against Brazil this became clear, however Scolari’s team managed to survive the immense pressure of "Die Mannschaft", due to the entire stadium pulling them through. The crowd managed to motivate the Brazilians and even at points scared the German veterans. In this atmosphere it was Neymar that thrived and managed to score probably one of the most important goals of his life. The result of Neymar's goal was that Germany had to play for the third place, instead of for the title. In the second semi final it was agan a European power taking on a South American candidate. The roles were again comparable to the other semi final, with the European side being the dominating one, while the South American side from time to time showed flashes of individual brilliance, mainly in the form of Messi. However despite these flashes of brilliance and the fact that Argentina from time to time was extremely dangerous, it was the versatility of the Spanish that turned out to be decisive when Pedro in the closing minutes of the game scored the 2-1 for Spain. Brazil 1-0 Germany Spain 2-1 Argentina |
