Neymar leads Brazil to sixth World Cup title July 2014 ![]() RIO DE JANEIRO | Brazil -- After an impressive streak from both sides Brazil and Spain met each other in the World Cup finals on 13 July 2014. For many the Brazilians were considered to be slight favorites due to the massive home advantage, an advantage that had already given them the edge over Germany. Analysts all over the world agreed that both teams have world class midfields and attacks, the difference could be within the defense of both sides. The battle tested and deep Brazilian defense, more specifically the holding midfield duo of Luiz Gustavo and Paulinho, would have to play a near perfect match to keep Spain’s offense under control. While Spain's defense has been relatively stable and performed well throughout its World Cup qualifying campaign and the World Cup itself, is however considered to be the Spanish team's main weakness. And under the heavy and dynamic attacks of the Brazilians it could turn out to be fragile. Many also remembered the Confederations Cup final in 2013, when Brazil had humbled world and European Champions Spain with a crushing 3-0 win, ending their opponents' three-year record run of 29 unbeaten competitive matches. The World Cup final did not turn out to be a replay of the Confederations Cup final. The only resemblance with the Confederations Cup final was the role of Neymar; the Barcelona superstar scored a stunning strike just before the break and his performance seemed to work inspiring on the entire Brazilian team. The Spanish defense had a lot of difficulties with the dynamic offensive of Brazil that was formed by Fred and Neymar. Time and again the Spanish defenders had to react to the rapid changes in the attack formation and on more than one occassion was played apart by the rapid ball movement of the forward lines of Brazil. The Spanish attack, and even the highly successful Pedro, were unable to penetrate the Brazilian defensive block, while midfield duo Luiz Gustavo and Paulinho managed to ward of most of the dangers posed by the Spanish side. However one a few occasions the Spanish maneuvered through the lines and fired several shots at Júlio César, however they were unable to pass the Brazilian goalkeeper and as a result the stadium exploded when the referee Howard Webb whistled for the end of the game. In the match for the third place it was Germany that managed to win against Argentina, and through this secure the third place at the 2014 World Cup. Brazil 1-0 Spain Germany 2-1 Argentina |

Saudi-Arabia and Qatar could co-host World Cup 2022 February 2015 ![]() ZURICH | Switzerland -- The soap around the 2022 World Cup could be entering a new phase, as FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested that Qatar could co-host the 2022 World Cup. The news was also confirmed by Qatari officials, who revealed that currently discussions are taking place between Doha and Riyadh on the matter, while talks with other parties also have been started. Blatter has said he was "sure" that the prospect of another Gulf nation staging matches, would be considered by FIFA "at a certain time". The 77-year-old Swiss also revealed his preference for the 2022 finals to be moved to November and December rather than earlier in the year. FIFA's executive committee last year agreed to begin a consultation process which will look at all the impacts of moving the tournament from June/July due to the extreme heat in the Gulf at that time of year. A report that is expected to be finished in the coming months. At the same time Blatter revealed the possibility of matches being played out of Qatar, saying: "I keep a big question mark on this. I have just passed through Saudi-Arabia and, even on a political level, people told me they would be happy to host some of the matches. So not even in the Gulf state but in the Middle East in general people care about this. Besides Saudi-Arabia the UAE also has expressed its interest to assist. The first step is to see how it can be played in November and December and this shall be until the next World Cup: we have six, nine, months' time to do so." At the same time Japan, one of the countries to lose out to Qatar in the battle to host the 2022 World Cup, says it would be capable of to staging the event if it is taken away from the Gulf state. Blatter however responded to this news that the FIFA did not consider taking away the tournament from Qatar was a valid option. Blatter is due to travel to Doha next week to meet the Emir of Qatar and discuss the country's moves to improve working conditions after an investigation revealed dozens of Nepalese workers have died in Qatar this year. Qatar's supreme committee has written to FIFA outlining its commitment to tackle the abuses. "I want to avoid all of this criticism concerning workers' rights, but this is another problem," Blatter said, in quotes reported in various newspapers. "To have the finals in different countries is not a new fact and I am sure it is something on the table at a certain time." _____ No immediate results, but various nations are interested in co-hosting, and while this was initially ruled out, it is now an actual possibility. Both the UAE and Saudi-Arabia could co-host the World Cup, while even Iran is considered a candidate. Edited by Jos1311, Apr 21 2014, 07:19 AM.

Belgium Triumph Over Dutch Rivals at Euro 2016![]() Liverpool's Divock Origi secured an extra time victory for Belgium over arch rivals the Netherlands in the sodden Parc des Princes in Paris. Leading 1-0 at half time thanks to Michy Batshuayi header, the Dutch swiftly took the initiative after the break when Memphis Depay broke the Belgian offside trap, leaving Vincent Kompany in his wake to slot past Thibaut Courtois. The Belgians were clearly rattled by the Dutch intensity and found themselves penned in their own half. With Wijnaldum pulling the string in midfield, the Belgian midfield were chasing shadows, and a sloppy foul by Juventus bound Mousa Dembele gave the Dutch the opportunity they needed on 61 minutes as Robben whipped a free kick over the Belgian wall. A wicked deflection off the head of Toby Alderweireld caused the ball to loop over the stranded Courtois, who lost his footing as he scrambled backward and watched the ball sail into the far corner. Marc Wilmots made two changes, bringing on Origi for the ineffective Lukaku and replacing the subdued Eden Hazard with Adnan Januzaj. It was the Manchester United youngster whose intelligent running created the space for Lukaku to control Jan Vertonghen's cross field pass and fire a shot that Cillessen could only parry into the path of Origi, who tapped in from 5 yards under pressure from de Vrij. Both teams pushed on in the final twenty minutes, but neither could make the breakthrough, the Dutch coming closest in a frenetic final minute in which they had a header cleared over the bar by Courtois, and from the resulting corner, saw Kompany clear off the line. The first half of extra time was an attritional affair, both sides suffering in the tiring conditions. Robben, appearing at his last international competition had run himself into the ground was replaced by Tonny Vilhena whose pace and attacking threat are rumoured to have secured a transfer to F.C. Bayern. Vilhena was quickly into the action, ghosting past Vertonghen and delivering a pinpoint cross which van Persie could only head tamely wide. Wijnaldum and Strootman began to lose their control on the midfield as extra time wore on, and five minutes after the break it was a sloppy pass by Strootman which led to their undoing. Kevin Mirallas, who had been relatively anonymous for much of the match, was able to nip in ahead of Daley Blind before playing in Origi who struck a tame shot which beat Cillessen at his near post. De Vrij slid back to stop the ball, succeeding in scooping it back into play, but HawkEye ruled it had crossed the line and the goal stood. The Belgians finished the game with ten men behind the ball and ultimately prevented an exhausted Dutch team from breaking them down, lifting a major international trophy for the first time in their history.
