Special Court rejects Musharaff's plea for codefendants, treason trials resume.
September, 2015

After nearly a year of deliberation, the Special Court appointed to try former President Pervez Musharraf for treason regarding his declaration of emergency power in 2007. Mr. Farough Naseem, Musharraf's lawyer, filed a plea to include a list of civilian and retired military conspirators, arguing that Musharraf acted only on their advice. The court rejected the argument, with Justice Faisal Arab noting that "the arguments presented by the defense are wholly incoherent and have no bearing on the defendant's culpability for trial."

The ruling comes after state prosecutors indicated a willingness to charge these co-conspirators in separate trials, despite Mr. Naseem's argument that a collective trial of all potential conspirators is a constitutional imperative. The court did, however, combine Mr. Musharraf's treason trial with pending trials on charges related to the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Baloch nationalist leader Akbar Bugti, as well as new charges related to the instigation of the Kargil war and the coup against Prime Minister Sharif in 1999. If convicted of any of these charges, Mr. Musharraf potentially faces the death penalty.

State prosecutors are expected to make their opening arguments in November, and Justice Arab has noted that the court hopes to have the trial concluded "before spring."

People are rather divided about this, as they feel that more people were responsible, and all the blame is now being placed upon Musharraf.
