South African Interference in Lesotho

Foreign Minister of Sudan

Sudan comes to the International Community to condemn the impending invasion of Lesotho by South Africa. South Africa reserves no right what so ever to interfere in the Domestic Affairs of Lesotho as a sovereign nation, and as such the Lesotho prime minister who has run to the South African government to take control of his country will not be recognised by Sudan and all relations will be cut off should South Africa enter Lesotho. Allow me to remind you of the mass protesting and civil unrest in Lesotho in 1998 in which the South African supported PM was accused of vote rigging and denied any lawsuit into the matter then had the South African military intervene in his conflict against Lesotho civilians, not only did Lesotho break international law by using military on it's civilians but South Africa deployed its military.

We do not wish to see a South African puppet lead Lesotho and as such we call on the International Community to urge South Africa to not repeat the actions it undertook in 1998.

I must remember what Cuba did in Angola or Grenada? Your island is not an example of neutrality, Sir.

Gentlemen please. There is absolutely no need to resort to such games. The concerns about the situation in Lesotho are valid, and indeed it would have been preferable that the international community would be included in the solution to deal with the matter. That being said I again request the Cuban government to elaborate its claim, as I have yet to be provided with any substantial evidence to indicate that the South African government is not complying to international law. I again stress that Pretoria has deployed forces on the basis of a request of the rightful government of Lesotho, making the deployment fully compliant with international law. While Cuba might not find that desirable for whatever reason is understandable, however I find it unacceptable that they make several bald claims and provide no information to back these claims.

Esteemed members of the International Community, I now return to this topic where it has been revealed an agreement hugely in favour of South Africa has been signed by the leader-in-exile of Lesotho. The South African government claims to be a big supporter of democracy yet it consistently violates that in regards to Lesotho. A PM who wants to consolidate power and abuses the system is given a reprieve but a military general is dismissed for standing up for the people. Not to mention the military of Lesotho is now DIRECTLY under South African control.

This clear violation of sovereignty is a big matter for Africa when one very bigger country forces the politics on a smaller one.

Minister Karti, the Pretoria Accords, that were concluded earlier this month are not in South Africa's favor, they are in the people of Lesotho's favor. Through these agreements, we have scheduled early elections, restored a working parliament to govern Lesotho, built a new inclusive, cabinet, and we have made the Prime Minister more accountable to his coalition, his associates, and his people. The Prime Minister, who was democratically elected, has had his executive powers curbed, and most of the responsibility of governance of Lesotho now lies in Lesotho's parliament, until new elections.

As for your claims regarding renegade Lieutenant-General Tlali Komali, he did not stand up for the people, he was merely trying to exploit the political situation in Lesotho, by attempting a coup against the Prime Minister. Now, he and his followers have engaged in firefights and skirmishes with Lesotho's police forces, working to seize weaponry, and to disturb the peace and stability of Lesotho. The South African and Lesotho governments know the cost, not only in economic prosperity, but human lives, if the crisis is allowed to continue to rage. This means that we, as members of the Southern African community, are tied in this struggle, and we will assist Lesotho's government in destroying these renegade forces in the Kingdom of Lesotho. In this same spirit, the South African National Defence Force Chief, Solly Shoke, was given temporary control of Lesotho's army, until loyalties could be determined, and a new lieutenant-general can be appointed.

Well well, who had expect this. We wonder if the German representative is still believing in the noble intentions of the South African government. Cuba and the ANC always had warm relations, but I'm concerned that with the death of comrade Mandela, the Socialist ideals of the ANC has died with him. Cuba will continue to vocally support the rights of the people of Lesotho.

Minister Parrilla, our intentions are still noble, and this shows through our commitment to signing the Pretoria Accords, so that the government of Lesotho can get back to work, and fulfill the will and needs of Lesotho's people. We are supporting the democratic and constitutional rights of the people of Lesotho, as well as backing Lesotho's security forces, in their mission of keeping the populace safe from the renegade military forces that threaten the Kingdom of Lesotho's stability and prosperity.

A peace treaty for Lesotho does not need a South African signature. That's not peace, that's enforcing yourself upon the people of Lesotho.

South African signatures were placed onto the treaty, so that our assistance to Lesotho could carry on, unimpeded, and this was done with the requests and compliance of Lesotho's democratically elected government, a govenrment who's responsibility it is, to carry out the will of the people. If the people and government of Lesotho wish for all South African forces to leave the country tomorrow, we will comply with their wishes. The same goes for their request, which they did in fact, make, for South African military presence, and assistance, in helping to restore the stability and peace of Lesotho.

Alright than. So let's organize a referendum so people can give their say. Maybe that will as well encourage the rebel movement to lay down their arms. At least temporary.

We have neither the time nor the immediate resources to begin carrying out a referendum, regarding South African intervention in Lesotho. Lesotho could be on the verge of war, and we can not wait months, for a formal referendum to take place. The government of Lesotho is acting on behalf of the people, and have been entrusted by the people to carry out their will, and in this, they have requested South African military intervention and assistance. If the people of Lesotho find this to be an unpopular decision, they can speak publicly in opposition, or make their voices heard in the ballot box, in free and open elections.
