Matteo Renzi Prime Minister of Italy Esteemed delegates, I have requested your attendance today to address a challenge that faces not only Italy and Europe, but that has grave implications on security in the Americas and parts of Africa also. It is estimated that the 'Ndrangheta crime family smuggle 80% of Europe's cocaine into Italy, mostly through the port of Gioia Tauro. Interception rates are embarrassingly low, despite the knowledge of where these drugs arrive, law enforcement in Italy does not to enough to stop it. I will not try to pull the wool over your eyes, my country is rife with corruption at various levels of, stretching from the policeman on the beat, through the courts and from local to national governance, and these are challenges that we must face ourselves. What I ask of you is a contribution under the auspices of Europol, Eurojust and in conjunction with the EUROMARFOR to bring the 'Ndrangheta and other families under control. An EU backed and staffed customs and policing action would be less liable to corruption, intimidation and bribery than local law enforcement. At present I have authorised the deployment of 5,000 Carbinieri to the area where the 'Ndrangheta operate, and while I have faith in their resilience to corruption, they say that every man has a price. I will lay out my proposals for assistance:
Tackling the 'Ndrangheta will be the first stage in attempting to reduce the influence of these criminal elements that hamper prosperity, blight business and enterprise and cause damage to the reputation of my country on the international stage. I am confident that if we can work together to tackle this issue, it will serve the Italian economy well and the long term benefits to the economy of my nation will have an impact far greater than austerity measures. I would like to open the floor to debate, offers of assistance or any questions. |

Frank Walter-Steinmeier Foreign Minister Assuming the Italian government will provide plans and direction for the use of resources provided, we will be willing to contribute naval patrol assets and reconnaissance aircraft for this operation, plus logistical personnel. |

![]() Anders Ahnlid,Svensk ambassadör till Europeiska unionen / Swedish Ambassador to the European Union. Sweden is willing to provide a surveillance aircraft, plus use of its justice system to carry out trials. Sweden has a very excellent record of non-corruptible judges. We are willing to have trials in Sweden if the Italian delegation felt it would help them. |

Matteo Renzi Prime Minister of Italy Your offers of surveillance aircraft will be of great benefit, and I will submit a formal plan for their use in the coming days after consultation with our customs agencies. The Swedish offer for trials will similarly be of huge benefit in dealing with these criminal gangs, and I cannot thank you enough. Edited by Chris, Nov 10 2014, 03:49 AM.

We will use the framework that Scottish judges used whilst in The Hague for the Lockerbie trial. Edited by iceviking, Nov 10 2014, 03:56 AM.
