With respect to the matter of trade sanctions levied against Cuba, it is the position of the Government of the United States that these policies are in the national interest of the United States. Moreover, it remains the position of the U.S. Government that these measures shall remain in place until such time that Cuba, among other things, unconditionally releases political prisoners, permits U.S. telecommunications companies to operate in Cuba, and ends fees on U.S. dollars remitted to Cuban families from the United States. Cuba must demonstrate that it is moving firmly in the direction of democratic transparency. When that process occurs, the U.S. will re-evaluate its policies towards Cuba. CUBA'S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE . Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez How are they in the interest of the people of the United States Ms. Power? This embargo CRIPPLES the economy of a country that is smaller than most of your states and for what? Because we refuse to be bullied into a certain political ideal that you hold in order to get these sanctions removed. I would also like to point out that the United States is talking out of both sides of their mouth. The United States REMOVED the DPRK from the list of embargoed nations in 2008. They are also a socialist country and in fact they in fact HAVE been openly militant to the the United States. Cuba however has NOT been militant towards the United States in fact the United States is so paranoid about an island that is smaller than one of their states that they created a coup to invade Cuba using Cuban defectors. The United States by their own reasoning is hypocritical. It SHOULD BE CLEAR to the international community that this is not about political ideals, democracy or safety of the United States, but is about a grudge that has been passed on and continues to be passed on in a way that hurts a country that is NO THREAT WHATSOEVER to the United States and a country that suffers deeply by the unjust and mean spirited BULLYING of the United States. The message that The United States is sending, is that they are willing to remove sanctions for a country that threatens peace stability and nuclear Armageddon in order to get what they want over a country that has been peacefully coexisting next to the United States for decades upon decades. The Cold war is over Ms. Power. You can go home now. Cuba is not harboring any threat to the United States other than your gigantically large ego which refuses to let go of something that happened 50 years ago and instead wishes to use an embargo that leaves our people poor and without food JUST so they can try to have political leverage and force Cuba to adhere to their political ideals. Nations of the world take note that it is the United States, NOT CUBA that is threatening nations and wielding their power. Edited by Winnie, Nov 12 2014, 01:31 PM.

I think the United Nations General Assembly is an inappropriate forum for tirades against U.S. trade policy. Rather, we should be concerned about the very poor human rights conditions in Cuba, and how the international community can work cooperatively to assist Cubans in their aspiration for democractic governance. When the people of Cuba can excercise the same freedom of expression that Mr. Rodríguez uses here, the United States will be prepared to reconsider its policy towards the Cuban government. CUBA'S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE . Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez You are changing the subject Ms. Power, If the United States cared that deeply about human rights, then why do some of the United States' biggest trading partners have a worse rating according to your so called human rights organizations than Cuba.....yet you do not embargo them and you are not forcing China to be capitalist or embargo Saudi Arabia over so called human rights violations. The argument coming fro the United States is one we have all heard ad nauseam and time and time again you can pick it apart and see that their true goal is not human rights especially since their actions kill Cubans who are so poor and hungry form food shortages that are a result of their embargo against Cuba. It is easy for the International community to see that the United States is determined to bully a nation that is helpless against a larger nation if it were not for this international community that can see just how deplorable it really is. Do you really care about human rights and human lives Ms. Power? Then why are you killing hundreds of my people by starving them in what amounts to a modern day siege? Vitaly Churkin Perminant Ambassador to the United Nations Russian Federation The grievances brought forward by honorable Cuban delegate are legitimate grievances and we see not reason why they should not be discussed here. Despite the way they where brought forward, the fact remains that the United States has, and continues to, damage the lives of the Cuban people. That is of concern, or should be of concern, to this honored body. Russia will review the proposed resolution, but also suggests that the discussion continue and that individual countries work to assist Cuba in the face of the sanctions from its largest neighbor. |

I am offended by the aggressive tone and lack of decorum of Mr. Rodríguez and will be excusing myself forthwith from this 'discussion'. Good day. SAMANTHA POWER Permanent Representative to the United Nations United States of America |

CUBA'S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE . Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez It is quote unfortunate that the representative from the United States left instead of attempting to come to a resolution to this matter. My government is VERY open to talks in order to solve this. While the Cuban Government cannot be bent politically by the will of another nation against our sovereign nation, I can assure the United States and the world that I have reforms planned that will take our nation fully into the 21st century with more care for the rights of the people. I have attempted twice to privately express this message to Ambassador Power, but I have yet to receive a reply. If the United States were willing to talk about this issue on a neutral site with mediators from neutral nations, my government would be most anxious to try and work this out and get the embargo lifted. |

I ask that the representative from the United States return. I promise to be civil in my discussion. I apologize for my town. If your nation was being besieged in starvation like mine is, I think you would also be passionate about trying to help your people. We will gain nothing if we jointly refuse to discuss it.
